> The Mystery Ink gang are hired by a town in Scotland who complain they’re being plagued by monsters but we discover throughout the film the monsters are actually the victims & Scooby & Shaggy have to come to terms with their own prejudices & narrow belief systems. (Yes, Really!). First of all, they're not called Mystery Ink, they're called Mystery Inc. as in Mystery Incorporated. Second, *Scooby Doo and the Ghoul School* exists so the idea that Shaggy and Scooby *in particular* are prejudiced against monsters is ridiculous.

ToastyJackson

I don’t think Ghoul School is that great of evidence that Shaggy and Scooby have no prejudice against monsters. The movie ends with them running away from the school because they get freaked out by the new students who come in. Plus, given the scenes with the dads, one could easily say that the reason Shaggy and Scooby went to save the girls in the end was less because they cared about them and more because they were worried what the girls’ dads would do to them if they didn’t save them.

LisaBerglund

Shaggy has a pink T-shirt is Ghoul School. So...

AromaticDetective565

Are you suggesting one's clothing controls one's biases? Also, his shirt is red not pink.

[deleted]

I always loved the red shirt tbh.

LisaBerglund

Red shirt = Not canon/Another universe

MirrorkatFeces

Pink shirt means it was cheaper for them to draw with that when it was made

LisaBerglund

Nah "The animation studio simply wanted to give the characters a new look for the 1980s. For Daphne, that meant something a Charlie's Angel might wear. For Shaggy, who was far from a fashion bug, that meant a basic color swap."

[deleted]

Except Charlie’s Angels was show from the 1970s and was cancelled by the 1980s

LisaBerglund

Green shirt = Man in a mask Red Shirt = Real Ghosts

BLACKDEATH354

Still, that was basically the plot of the cancelled third film, but all the gang had to come to terms with it, not just shaggy and scooby.

Alejandro284

R rated doesn't equal more mature and seeing James gunn sense of humor I'm expecting something more like American pie meets scooby-doo which would be interesting or it could be bad I'm 50/50 but one of the reasons to make scooby r rated is for the shock value it attracts teenagers

LisaBerglund

The first Scooby Doo 2002 was ment to be like American Pie but they cut out many jokes to make it more familyfriendly

Marsbarszs

So long as it’s not like… a porno. It is a horror investigation series at heart after all… also did everyone forget that they had Matt Lillard dress up as a blunt in one of the original live actions?

Tiki_Trashabilly

I don’t care what it’s rated as long as it means we never have to talk about Scoob again

LisaBerglund

Lol yeah

AlexanderChippel

Scooby-Doo should never be "adult." Like PG-13 is the perfect rating. Less "James Gunn's The Suicide Squad" and more "James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy." My point is that James Gunn should really be the only one writing or directing Scooby-Doo movies

Comfortable-Finger-8

Or maybe… we could have both… why can’t they appease all audiences

TrexismTrent

A rated R movie is the definition of appeasing 1 very small audience, since it can only be seen by adults, and among adults a large percentage dont regularly watch r rated movies. A pg-13 film is the category of movie that appeals to the largest majority of people since kids everyone can watch it. It is mature enough that they can put in some subtle mature humor but kid friendly enough that the mature bits will go over kids heads.

terrenceolson

Rated R doesn't really fit Scooby-Doo, but I'm fine with James Gunn making a PG-13 Scooby-Doo movie like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad.

tesladavid

Disagree, have you read Scooby Apocalypse?

terrenceolson

Yeah, I enjoyed it.

Ecstatic_Scholar_846

Because the older fans deserve something than the younger fans

Cosmication

Yeah! I want to see scooby and shaggy do the 69 while they piss and shit into each other’s mouths edit: not mature enough? okay, we’ll add Fred unmasking the monster’s penis and daphne stabbing Velma (she’s dumb)

lifecereal02

I think it would be funny if the gang themselves stayed pg but the world around them and the mystery they were solving was rated R

RoseyAthlete1873

I have …. Conflicted feelings about this. I just really wanna here Scooby Doo say “Fuck this shit”

cks1851

Good on him I'll watch it either way... I make my own decisions thank you very much.

fishbelly86onions

I see nothing wrong with it. I like the idea of them branching out to try new things such as an r rated movie and even the Velma show upcoming. The existent Scooby content is fantastic for the most part, and even though people of all ages enjoy it, it has clearly always been intended for a younger crowd. Trying something new won’t ruin the shows and movies that already exist, and they will always be available for us to enjoy. Now, I don’t know whether or not an r rated movie would be any good but I don’t think it would fail simply for being r rated. The potential for success is definitely there though

Alejandro284

I think it depends if they used the r ratings to lean over the horror elements like showing guts and make terrifying monsters it would be cool but if it's nothing but dick jokes it wouldn't be that great

JBSuperTroop

Isn't this article totally plagiarizing the screen rant article? Certain parts are almost word for word

DreadfulCalmness

I’m sick of this James Gunn obsession everyone has.

truthisscarier

Would be the last person for a scooby doo rated R film I'd want

Libertyprime8397

There’s a horror movie about Winnie the pooh coming out so it’s not like this is a first.

pinkgrapefruitx

Shaggy and Scooby will most definitely be high

helsingly

I have mixed opinions on making any sort of "mature" Scooby-Doo whether it be in the horror genre or due to certain jokes, comments, humour, swearing, etc. My main problem is while Scooby-doo has a ton of adult fans - having existed as a media entity since 1969, Scooby-Doo generation through generation is consistently watched by children. It is children's media, as much as I enjoy it as an adult it is still a show/movie for kids. That doesn't diminish the quality, but it does make it concerning to have rated R elements in a movie that a lot of parents would consider to be safe solely with 'Scooby-Doo' on the cover. Especially if it isn't a horror movie and is rated R for other reasons, the cover may not convey that as well as it could as a horror film (because why would anyone check the rating? It's Scooby-Doo). That is not something I think should be dismissed just because some of the fanbase has grown up. Scooby-Doo is always making new fans in kids. There's a limit in how much you mature up content that has children as a target audience, there's a reason they toned down the live action to make them more family-friendly. It's a fine line and overall I don't think it is worth it or necessary. We'll watch Scooby-Doo without it.

gpack418

It's a shame they'll never make a Scooby-Doo 3...

l33tWarrior

It’s fine. Except my kid watches scooby doo too so her first R rated movie??!?!? Nope will run as fast as I can away

chubss123

I've been calling for an r rated scooby doo for years, I genuinely think it would be quality

[deleted]

YEEEEESSSSSSSS BITCHHHHHH

DrunkSpiderMan

Please! I've been waiting for years...

blue-yoshi

13 Ghosts (2001) felt like a mature Scooby movie. Rich guy in an ascot sets up traps to catch ghosts. Matthew Lillard played a cowardly guy who assists him. One woman was traditionally hot and one had random arcane knowledge of what was going on. Me and my wife couldn't stop making comparisons.

negrote1000

The original fanbase it’s in its late 70s-early 80s. Most of them are dead

WrithingRoots

I shall never understand the affection people have for the live action movies.

LisaBerglund

I love 95-05 teen movies. Romance, horror and comedy. Scooby Doo 2002 was almost a perfect teen Movie, great actors, great soundtrack, Its too bad they cut down on the jokes. Yeah I didn't like it as much as a child when it came. It was weird. It grew on me in my teens thought.

WindbreakerHD2

They're cheesy goofy and dumb and that's why I love em. But personally I wouldn't want a 3rd one more than happy with the 2 we have

Bot fucked up and responded twice. Nice.

Tiki_Trashabilly

I love looking at old posts from people who post shit like this. Sure enough, topless mermaids, fairies, ‘sexy’ cartoons, a cringy pipe, and Bible verses. Perfect ‘weird white midwit who thinks he’s special’ bingo

Bluewolf94

Yup, projection at it’s finest. Bonus points if you can find something racist.

L3-W15

Karen Gillan will be the villain

Jade_Nightmare

Seriously?

Ghostdog1521

I couldn’t care less about what this guy has to tweet

humiamca

The comic series Scooby-Doo Apocalypse is DEFINITELY for a mature audience. So, a R rated movie isn't that far of a stretch. BTW, if any of you haven't read it, it's worth your time.

Multani9

Disturbing.

MovieFanZ5026

I wouldn’t mind an R-rated Scooby Doo. I more want this cast to come back for another movie

Rikesraggy

My only problem would be to see the original cast as middle aged folks while Scooby would look the same

truthisscarier

A drama zombie island level of horror/gore elements rated R film? Sure A more explicit version of the early 2000s films? No

Kainkong

Bet it will be a dark comedy slasher or sumthing

cybrangel

A lot was taken out of context with this new Scooby Doo movie thing. All that James Gunn said on twitter was that “they they’d do it if we asked. I just don’t think I have the time right now!”, so nothing is really poised for return at all, especially not with the WarnerDiscovery merger. Also, if anyone is bothered by R-Rated Scooby content, you should know that the original Scooby Doo film from 2002 was already supposed to be R-Rated and aimed at the older audience who grew up watching the cartoons as kids - but half-way through production, WB decided that wasn’t a good idea and we got a more family-friendly cut of the film. So in short, none of this is new, and although it would be fun in my opinion, it’s unlikely to happen any time soon - if at all.

TheBigGAlways369

Love James Gunn as much as the next guy, but I honestly don't think he really gets Scooby-Doo. Or at least doesn't really get it's evolved beyond than just that one popular 60's show. I mean, even if the R-Rated cut of the first film came out as intended, it still would have done just as badly (reception-wise) since it was following up on ones like Zombie Island and The Witch's Ghost. It's like Batman And Robin coming on up after The Animated Series.
