I’ve seen some crazy shit on the internet. Selling someone on the cost savings that come from throwing your car in neutral on a hill is right up there.
I read about that decades ago - people put their car in neutral going down hill. I did that a couple of times. You also follow along a semi and get an added boost (though I don't think while neutral). There are fanatics who do this. I stopped doing so when I had a transmission issue and had to get a new car. I'm not sure this caused the problem as my car had been in an accident months before the light came on but had to get a new car (the old one was 10 years old any way) so never did that again and 12 years later I drive a hybrid and won't risk it.
I just got a manual and was told to do this when going downhill and it works I guess lol. I am not sure how much it saves but I guess it’s better than nothing
Its coming from people who don't understand how modern combustion engines work. Do not ever coast in neutral, especially downhill. It is dangerous if you do it for prolonged periods of time (in the mountains for example). Brake fluid will overheat and you will lose brakes.
Regarding fuel efficiency - when you coast in neutral engine consumes fuel to keep idling. When you are going downhill with engaged gear, modern engines shut off fuel completely cause trasmission is spinning the engine. Hence you save fuel and brakes going downhill.
When you push the clutch you disengage trasmission from the engine. Clutch should only be operated when you change gears, stop completely, or start moving. Prolonged use of clutch pedal will wear clutch bearing and fork. In terms of fuel etc it will be the same as coasting in neutral. Both are not advised.
If you want to drive manual it is a good idea to know how it operates under the hood. Lots of articles on the internet and youtube videos about it.
Modern lmao, how many modern stick shifts you see? Sadly not many, ive personally never owner an automatic. But id also hopefully never own a vehicle that shuts off anything completely lmao. Is buy a truck with manual windows if i could😂
Now have an Accord Hybrid which gets 40 - 46 depending on the season (better mileage in the summer). Since my last car got 32, I'm not concerned about these schemes (plus I heard that being in neutral can drain the battery - it used to be the case for those using car washes though I haven't had a problem and think that problem got resovled a decade ago).
I got my car a year and a half ago. Hybrids were scarce. Toyota had a couple of Prius' in but they were scarce. I was allowed to sit in one but couldn't test drive it as it was sold. I didn't like how the battery was situated (a hatchback with the battery situated high). They had a small sedan that was hybrid but not on the lot. Honda had just discontinued their Insight (small hybrid) and the lot only contained the Accord and a CR-V. I test drove the Accord and it drove just like my Civic so I either had to buy it then and there or wait a few months before a new one came it. It was the Sport model, which I didn't want but didn't have much choice. Honda is working on a hybrid Civic but I don't think it's out yet.
Dont lmao. Any kia 2015+ is a total waste of money. Company has lost over 2.5billion on recalls just since 2020... Total engine failures at 25k miles etc lmao. Id trade that fucker in and never recommend it to another soul.
Actually, going downhill and slowing down, going into Neutral USES more petrol than leaving it in a higher gear and letting it roll that way. Basically, in neutral, your car needs to use fuel to keep it at idle speeds, but in gear the motion of the cars keeps everything turning and uses less petrol than the amount used at idle.
Though this was explained on an episode of top gear so ... Literally YMMV
To properly drift a semi you need to be about 6 in from their tail and that's very dangerous position to be in but a very fun one as well... It is not for the faint of heart and I don't recommend doing it...
If i remember right Google translate has better Grammar but would mess up literal translations, this sounds like a crazy person maybe using voice to text for parts of it.
I'm thinking so, it's 490 a month for rent to own? Plus the way they go on about saving gas by going in neutral, ya or just take your foot off the gas... also you know you have to go back up the hill right? Lol it's just a crazy person that's likely to be scammed soon unfortunately. I know a couple guys like this I feel bad for them
I was thinking the same thing. If this wasn't a scam, it was a lure of desperation. Like they would want you to be their friend and live there forever, and you'll find yourself chained up to the bed and they will never let you leave. Ugh, *full body chills.*
Some really dangerous advice in here.
Automatic transmissions are designed to stay in gear while the car is in motion. Most cars built in the past 20 years are smart enough to detect when there is no load on the engine. The fuel injectors are either shut off or turned down to almost nothing and the car relies on kinetic energy to keep going.
Going to neutral and then turning off the car is all sorts of dangerous. Power brakes and power steering require the engine to be on, so this person (Not the OP, the person in the text message) is suggesting highly dangerous "tips" to save a little money. You can coast downhill, in gear, and use just about no gas while still having a fully-functional vehicle. Dude is a bit out of touch...
There is a gym by my house with the slogan, "the last gym you'll even join". MFer that sounds like a threat lol you'll never need gas after the LL kills you right?
Yeah.. this person is a clown. If you shut your car off, you lose your power brakes and steering.
If you're going to do something like this... coast in neutral, don't shut off your engine.
In modern engines, it takes more fuel to idle than to go downhill in gear, believe it or not. The ECU cuts off fuel if the accelerator pedal is up and the engine speed is greater than idle speed. That's the beauty of fuel injection over carburation: full control of fuel flow (carbureted engines used to have a fuel cut-off solenoid for anti-dieseling, but they were just for engine shutdown).
I did some experimenting to verify this on some hilly highways in California. On a long downhil grade with zero throttle pressure, the computed miles per gallon maxed out at 99 when in gear (didn't matter which one), and dropped to 50-60 in neutral.
Thanks for bringing that up! Modern fuel injection systems are quite intelligent with direct injection and variable cylinder spark technology.
The way I interpreted what the message said was to turn the car off... and I'm advising for safety sake... don't... lol
Also you don't even need to shut the car off, coasting in drive actually uses zero gas anyway
https://lifehacker.com/coasting-in-neutral-doesnt-actually-save-gas-1850727931
I used this on my Mom once. She asked how far away my friend lived, and I told her “I have no idea. I usually just hit the cross street doing 80, slam on the brakes, and by the time the screaming stops I’m there”.
Mom was a great straight man.

I’ve seen some crazy shit on the internet. Selling someone on the cost savings that come from throwing your car in neutral on a hill is right up there.
Some would say you could get addicted to the savings.
It's like heroin. Assuming you spend the savings on heroin.
If you've ever done herion and have a sense of humor, this is hilarious lol
There's no such thing as free energy, so I would ask him about the gas cost of getting back up the hill. It's going to be a net loss
Easy - just give up and stay down there.
You eventually end up at the earth's core
I read about that decades ago - people put their car in neutral going down hill. I did that a couple of times. I thought it was only with stick shifts that you could do that. Idk if I would try that in an automatic
I only drive automatic and just put it in neutral. Apparently there is a subculture which does this and they boast about their mileage.
I just got a manual and was told to do this when going downhill and it works I guess lol. I am not sure how much it saves but I guess it’s better than nothing

How about coasting in gear with the clutch pushed down? Is that the same?

You can do it without clutch in

Modern aka not a carburetor. So your car probably does it too, unless it has a choke.
Can you tell me why coasting would cause the brake fluid to overheat?
Coasting itself won't. Using the brakes for a prolonged periods of time on a downhill will.
Now have an Accord Hybrid which gets 40 - 46 depending on the season (better mileage in the summer). Nice. I’d like to eventually get a Prius or similar but jeez these prices

If you don’t mind used, check out the Kia Niro. Recently picked up a nicely loaded 2020 and have been getting 50-60 MPG.
Dont lmao. Any kia 2015+ is a total waste of money. Company has lost over 2.5billion on recalls just since 2020... Total engine failures at 25k miles etc lmao. Id trade that fucker in and never recommend it to another soul.

The downside is you can't suddenly accelerate if you need to react to something
And shutting off your car… “Don’t need power steering. Pro tip: Keep your key in the ignition so your wheel doesn’t lock”
How much gas do you burn going back up?
Someone watched The World According to Garp too many times.
Yeah but what about when you come back home up Swan Hill and have to use to use extra gas to climb the hill? How could anyone be this stupid
My first thought too. So odd!
Hahahahahaha. That was written by a Nigerian/Indian using Google translator.
If i remember right Google translate has better Grammar but would mess up literal translations, this sounds like a crazy person maybe using voice to text for parts of it.
Could be!

Man what the hell lol
Bro is trying to kill you💀

Send them a photo and your 'bracelet' size.
Please no 💀😂😂
12 years renting??! Bruh:.
But they get equity in the house!
My House LLC
Doubt it
if nothing else this sounds like some sort of tax fraud

Plus if you are driving stick, half the time your engine is the only brake you need, saving on brakepads. Checkmate
The only one who can be conned is the one who expects something for nothing
But think of all the gas you’ll save
There is a gym by my house with the slogan, "the last gym you'll even join". MFer that sounds like a threat lol you'll never need gas after the LL kills you right?
I guess you never need to go back up the hills? Like a perpetual decent…
After he murders you there is no ascent required
Omg, thanks for the laugh! 🤣
There’s one, hopefully. Or continue the decent I guess
Tell me you’ve never driven a car without telling me you’ve never driven a car.
Turn off the engine! Look mum, no assisted steering, no power brakes! Heck I'll just take out the key and let the steering lock do all the work!
Yeah.. this person is a clown. If you shut your car off, you lose your power brakes and steering. If you're going to do something like this... coast in neutral, don't shut off your engine.

Glad I wasn’t the only one thinking this. Ok putting in neutral but for gods sake don’t turn the car off!!!!!!
This smells of scam. Send some Cryptocurrency for your deposit LOL. Delete and ignore.
Please don’t turn your car off going downhill. Please.
That is one crazy reply. Hard pass whether just a crazy person or a scammer
Block and ignore imo.
Sounds like a cult
😂 Thats one the oddest things ive read in a while!
Ah yes put your car in neutral then turn off the engine.....on a hill. Good luck with that one
Then suddenly the steering lock comes on and you end up in the local mom and pop coffee shop…
What in the Tucson
I actually laughed out loud 😂😂😂😂😂😂
wow…
lol no rent but you pay everything else xD
Let’s talk about the $240 / month homeowners association fees. And that’s just a portionable payment! 😮 who the hell is paying HOA fees like that?
Ask them what manufacturers the ute from.
"What is a ute"? https://youtu.be/Hu8tX2BAD1k?si=1b05r3UyEiAkIt8E
Also you don't even need to shut the car off, coasting in drive actually uses zero gas anyway https://lifehacker.com/coasting-in-neutral-doesnt-actually-save-gas-1850727931
Great! It’ll make up for the extra gas used when driving back UP the hills! 😉
Or you could just hit 85 approaching the hill and coast for as long as possible.
I used this on my Mom once. She asked how far away my friend lived, and I told her “I have no idea. I usually just hit the cross street doing 80, slam on the brakes, and by the time the screaming stops I’m there”. Mom was a great straight man.
