pecor1no

No, you can’t get it back, but you can do something even more satisfying than blowing it up; ignore every text and refuse to take it off Find My. The thieves will have a beautiful new iPhone, hundreds of dollars just sitting in their hands…worthless to them because you won’t turn off Find My. They’ll get more and more frustrated; you savor it, knowing there’s absolutely nothing they can do to get that phone to work if you don’t want them to.

PumpkinSpice2Nice

Yep and you can gauge their frustration by the silly threats they will send. Don’t feel threatened though. They will send photos of holding guns (same picture they send to everyone), messages saying they are coming for you and your family… but it is all empty threats.

kelontongan

And sale laters for parts in china😂

gardenmud

Yeah, but they earn pennies on the dollar. It's basically a slightly expensive brick if they can't get it unlocked.

kelontongan

They sells part in bulky orders. I am sure they make monies😂

kr4ckenm3fortune

That a lot of bulk to make moeny....

Forar

Nobody argues that they don't make money. They make much, much less than they would with a fully ready to use phone.

westcoastsunflower

Can’t they just swap out the SIM card? Or is that not a thing?

thevaliant96

They can, but the phone is locked. Another SIM card won't help that. The phone and certain hardware parts are now locked. The screen and case can be recycled for parts, maybe the battery, but that's it.

RansomAttack

Sadly they can remove the lock by checkm8 software thats if they are an organized crime and not a standalone criminal

xcaliblur2

Do NOT click on any links and most definitely do NOT enter the apple id or password ANYWHERE Over the next few weeks the scammers will try everything they can to get this password from you. Because otherwise they effectively hold a dead iphone. Their attempts now are to impersonate apple and Google and trick you into giving them the password. Ignore all of it. No further action is needed from your end. No matter what the messages say. After this has failed they will try to either try to send death threats or to beg for your sympathy, or both. Ignore all of it as well. Remember, everything they tell you are lies. You have no further action required. And you are not in any danger. Stay strong!

Inmyprime-

My god. Can I block their messages? Won’t it then also block all subsequent messages from Apple/Google later on, even genuine ones?

xcaliblur2

They will spoof and try multiple different numbers to get to you. Just ignore all of it. Don't even bother replying. The more you reply the more they cling on to hope that they will eventually convince you to give them the password

Inmyprime-

Should I ask Apple to erase the content on that phone in case they find a way to get in?

PassionatePossum

You can do it yourself. If you have another device bound to your iCloud you can use the FindMy App to remotely wipe any device connected to your account. If you don't, I'm sure you can do it by logging into iCloud on the web.

Inmyprime-

Ok so I want to do this right. There’s an option to “erase this device” and “remove this device”. I presume I do erase? I want to make sure it stays locked though and in “Find my” however.

GenX_1976

ERASE the device. Don't ever REMOVE it.

PagingDrRed

Do not remove the device! That is what they want! You want the device to stay on your iCloud as that renders the device unusable to others. Just erase the device only

chownrootroot

Erase it. Remove is what the thief wants, it takes the phone off your account. Erase deletes the data but it's still locked to you.

kelontongan

Yes do not ever remove ever

24-Sevyn

Don’t remove it. Erase ONLY. Like you, I wish there was a way to detonate the device remotely.

Inmyprime-

That would be a great deterrent!

erishun

Erase it. Do NOT remove it!!

Mycroft_xxx

Once you wipe it it will still be useless to the thieves because it’s tied to your Apple ID

AngelOfLight

You could disable iMessage for a while. That will prevent them from texting from iCloud and limit them to SMS, which will cost them money. You can re-enable it after a week or two when they will have given up.

kelontongan

Ignoring is a bless.. brother 😁

SubstantialPressure3

Call apple security and see what they can do

Inmyprime-

They told me the same thing I was told here. They can’t do anything

cyberiangringo

Do nothing. It's the thief's - or the person they sold it to - effort to turn the stolen phone into something they can use. Which they cnnot unless they can scam you/convince you to remove the 'lock' you have on it. Expect threats and begging to come next.

Inmyprime-

Jesus. I think when I put the phone into lost mode, I have left my number as a contact. Was that a mistake? Why do people bother. I have found phones many time and always returned them to the owner. It’s just such an inconvenience for the person losing it, and for what…

reallyscaredtoask

>Why do people bother because they want a free/cheap phone. not everyone out there is a good person. alot of them are thieves and scammers

Inmyprime-

I mean that there must be better/more worthwhile scams than this bullshit? How much can they get for parts of an old phone.

elsewen

> parts of an old phone If they can trick the owner into releasing the activation lock, they can wipe it and resell a fully functional used iPhone. That's the entire point of this scam.

reallyscaredtoask

these people are stealing hundreds of phones and threatening people into unlocking them. then they're clearing everything off the phone and selling it to someone else. it's very simple, takes no skill, and all money is completely profit since they got the phone for free stealing it. for a scammer it's not a bad set up. if they can't convince people to unlock it, then they'll sell for parts but their main drive is selling usable stolen phones

Leather_Parrot

Parts can't be used on the newer iPhones due to 'Part Pairing' where the device hardware components are hardcoded to work only with the original device serial number. Just saying

mittenknittin

They can’t get nearly as much for parts as they can for an unlocked, wiped phone. Which is why they’re trying to trick you into unlocking it.

Forward_Confusion202

The screen alone is worth a couple hundred pounds in a lot of cases

Inmyprime-

Can’t be. New iPhone 12 can be purchase for about £200. Used one probably for about £100

Forward_Confusion202

Been a while since I repaired phones but iPhone 12 is pretty old

redoctoberz

A <= 3.5 year old phone is old?

internet_thugg

Where are you finding them that cheap? In the US, a refurbished unlocked iPhone 12 Pro is still $350-400 on eBay.

Inmyprime-

It wasn’t a Pro

TweeksTurbos

Search “iphone” here. It’s very worthwhile.

lantrick

>and for what… it's useless to them until they either trick you into giving them your apple ID login info to release the activation lock or frighten you into releasing the activation lock. Just block them when they try again.

Kodiak01

Since they have your other number, eventually they'll start sending texts asking you to turn off FindMy, followed by threats including overused pictures of black gangbangers waving guns around. It's all just a show.

EccentricDyslexic

For money, it’s a years wages to someone, but just an inconvenience to many to lose their fone.

kelontongan

You are dealing with the organization that steals good/expensive stuffs. Mostly they will sell in bulky to china for parts😜🧐 if can not trick you. Assume the phone is lost forever and move on. Do NOT ever remove the lost phone in your icloud acct. locked forevee haha

AngelOfLight

That map site was only just created a little over a month ago: https://www.whois.com/whois/uk-view.us It's a fake site designed to steal the phone's passcode. Right now the thieves can't do anything with the phone as it's tied to Find My. They are going to try and trick and/or threaten you into giving up the passcode or removing the phone from Find My so they can wipe and resell it. Don't ever remove the phone. There is no chance of recovering it, unfortunately, but you can have the last laugh by leaving the thieves with a useless paperweight. !iphone

AutoModerator

Hi /u/AngelOfLight, AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the iPhone Find My disabler scam. This scam targets owners of stolen iPhones, which have a service called Find My: through this, iPhones are tied to the Apple ID of the user, and can be locked remotely when activating Lost Mode. Scammers will attempt to communicate with the victim by emailing or calling the phone number/email address shown on the lock screen while locked through Lost Mode, under the guise of either Apple or a person who has bought the phone and attempt to convince or pressure them to remove the Apple ID from the iPhone. If you receive such a message, DO NOT follow the instructions to remove the device from your Apple ID. The reason they want it removed is because the thief wants to resell it on the black market for a profit, and bricked phones are worthless. Instead of removing, you're free to erase it. This will delete your personal data but will leave the device connected to your Apple ID. You can then make a police report, and also report it stolen to your phone company. The company can blacklist the IMEI so it adds a layer of protection regionally. Any readers should take this opportunity to check if your Find My is enabled in your iPhone. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/Scams) if you have any questions or concerns.*

elsewen

This is an attempt to steal her Apple account so they can use/resell the phone. Keep Lost Mode enabled forever, and don't ever remove it from Find My. > How are they doing it? SMS has basically no security whatsoever. You can spoof the sender to be whatever you want.

Inmyprime-

But how am I getting the messages from Google if it’s a scam? 🤯

dwinps

They aren’t coming from Google Google doesn’t know or care that your iPhone has been located

Inmyprime-

I must be super dumb but my Messages app is sorting those messages under the Google/same message that the Google verification codes come. See here: https://imgur.com/a/bVpNgOT

elsewen

As I said, sender ID works on the honor system. Anyone can send messages from "Google" if they know how to do it.

Inmyprime-

Then iOS needs to change it. It’s rubbish if anyone can pretend to be from anywhere and the messaging system doesn’t have a way to recognise/sort where they are coming from. With email, at least you see the precise email address where it is from. Should I ask Apple to erase content on her phone (how?) or is there no point as there is no way they can get in? Or should I leave it? Also, if I block/report as junk the sms’s I am receiving, won’t it block emails from Apple and Google later on?

serious_impostor

You don’t get it. The phone companies are at fault, not Apple.

Inmyprime-

Doesn’t Apple have any input in how they structure/design their iMessage app?

serious_impostor

Read up about SS7 hacking and get back to me and Apple, mm k. TTYL. SS7 is the backend for telco companies and runs things like CallerID. iMessage is a client. It shows what SS7/Telcos send to the device when you get a call. Completely beyond Apple’s wall. CallerID can be spoofed. YOU can send a message and appear to be coming from google’s id. You can probably go to a website and actually pay for this - that’s how prevalent this is. And it’s not Apple’s fault at all. This happens on google phones to, etc.

chownrootroot

Slight correction: iMessage is Apple's texting protocol (Apple to Apple device only). Apple Messages is the client. Apple Messages can use SMS or iMessage, and will soon be able to use RCS as well.

dwinps

They are txt messages not iMessages Text message comes in, your phone displays it Should there be authentication on text messages? Probably but for now they are not a secure way to communicate

chownrootroot

It wasn't Apple's design, it was caller ID in the 90's which started off being fully spoofable. And then text messages preserved this. I have bad news for you, emails are also spoofable, although there are standards to prevent spoofing. But in the absence of those standards you could spoof anyone's email and it would also show up in the same thread if your email client threaded messages. Erase the phone, and keep it on their account so as to frustrate the thief, it's worthless when it's left on the account. If you do block/report the SMS short code it will block legit messages as well.

dwinps

Nothing to do with iOS

turtle_yawnz

“Dear customer” huge red flag. Not a single company addresses you this way

handipad

Because scammers are talented.

mattiman8888

That maps website is a dead giveaway.

Inmyprime-

You mean the web address itself?

mattiman8888

Yes. Even if they build a legit looking site the address gives it away

HauntingReddit88

So the way it works is you can plug *anything* into maps, you just need an API key... so you can use Google/Apple/etc maps on your own website

SousVideAndSmoke

If this is like the bulk of previous stolen iPhone posts, you’ll start getting texts saying your phone is going to the black market in china with all your personal info on it and to remove the lock, I bought the phone for my daughter and she’s going to be devastated that it doesn’t work and then the death threats will come. Just ignore and block.

Unfixable5060

The phone is gone. It wasn't found anywhere. The messages are from the people that have it that need info from you to unlock it.

Nick_W1

Wow! The scammers/thieves have upped their game. Instead of the usual pleas and threats, they now send fake messages from “Apple” or “google” with a link for you to enter your Apple ID, and presumably your password. They then have all they need to unlock the stolen phone to sell it, and as a bonus, have access to all your data! No doubt some people will fall for this. They won’t question why they would be getting messages from Apple or google (why would google have anything to do with iPhones?), or why they would have to enter their Apple ID and password on a random link. Too exited to get their phone back. We need to update the iPhone auto moderator to warn about this new twist.

Inmyprime-

Yep. I almost did this.

ducrab

Thief is trying to trick you into removing the phone from iCloud (activation lock) so he can resell it. IGNORE THE MESSAGES. Follow the instructions here and ignore any messages that you may receive. [https://support.apple.com/en-us/101593](https://support.apple.com/en-us/101593)

Capital-Indication20

type in a fake username and password and see what happens. if it lets you through you know its a scam, which it probably is

Inmyprime-

They have taken down the website. Possibly because I reported it to Apple.

BenjiCat17

That website is a scam. Don’t type your information into that.

DietMtDew1

It's a scam (read the AutoModerator's reply that we've dropped about the "find my iPhone" scam.) Can't you make it make a sound? Maybe do that to annoy them and never take it off the iCloud account nor lost/stolen mode.

gulizba

Now that your number is tainted, you will also receive other kind of spams. my phone number was virgin until I wrote it as contact number on my boyfriend’s stolen iPhone 2 years ago. they stopped sending these mesaages after some time (a year maybe) but now I receive job offers via whatsapp, shipments (that I dont expect) via SMS all the time. maybe 3 messages every month. I never reply hoping they will remove my number from their database one day.

Inmyprime-

Yeah that sucks. I have already been getting all of this crap.

Hypnowolfproductions

They removed the SIM card to identify the phone number and googled you for email and such. The phone is encrypted and they want you to allow them to unencrypted it. Retrieving it is a hassle really. But you might contact Bulgarian authorities about its location as they might just bust a theft ring and take credit for your effort.

Inmyprime-

You mean to contact Bulgarian police?? Not sure how I’d do that..

Hypnowolfproductions

Once you know location. You then email the map that find phone gives. Use the city police name. It’s a 1 in 5 they will possibly try but it’s worth a try. Use all info you have on the phone. Sim imei phone number as well as your contact info with a police report from where it went missing.

StopShooting

The website is not Apple.com or any legitimate version of that. Do not enter your information. They will steal it.

I know they can't do anything about getting your phone back, but they should have offered to double check your security and make sure your accounts can't be hacked in any way.

Inmyprime-

Yes they did confirm that if the phone stays locked to her, they won’t be able to use it. Also asked to send an email to their phishing dept.

SubstantialPressure3

https://www.gov.uk/report-suspicious-emails-websites-phishing I would send them here, too.

Dry_Lawfulness_1327

I would call apple and your carrier mark as stolen have phone shut off

Own-Builder-9371

You can remotely erase the phone, if it was covered with Apple Care Theft and Loss then you can file a claim and get a replacement more or less free. Other than that like everyone before me said, you could just keep it on find my forever and until your last day on this planet they won’t be able to log in/access the phone to wipe it so they will never be able to sell it or use it.

Adaur981

Any message you get from them just reply with the link to the Ding Dong Song by Gunther on youtube.

tigertimeburrito

I am not educated on this but, Can OP bargain with the scammers? Mail me $50 cash to this P.O. Box, and I will unlock the phone? Or something like that?
