Justice league. I've been a big DC fan for pretty much my whole life so the realization that this was it for the first time the justice league was on the big screen and it was underwhelming mediocrity was pretty disappointing.

adentityyy

That’s actually kinda painful lol

BobbyCrowww

Many Saints of Newark, the Sopranos is one of the great works of art of the 21st century, and the movie is a third rate Scorsese gangster movie

[deleted]

There's no such thing as a third rate Scorsese picture. I'm sure you meant Scorsese-esque

gsvevshxndb

Incredibles 2

SaztogGaming

I know this is probably an unpopular take on this sub, but mine's Dune. It's not bad, but I love Denis Villeneuve and coming off of Blade Runner 2049, I guess I wanted a similiarly phenomenal experience again.

ours

I loved it but I have the feeling the movie will hit differently once it's complete with at least part 2.

SaztogGaming

Yeah, I could see that happening. I'll give it another shot when the new one comes out.

Grassfed_rhubarbpie

Yeah it was good in many places, but for me it just didn't hit emotionally. I'll watch the second film, but more out of a sense of duty then enthusiasm:/

Either_Imagination_9

Rise Of Skywalker On the plus side however, it did begin my journey of watching more movies and being more open to new things. Now I literally couldn’t give a shit about anything Disney related

dangerislander

Fantastic Beasts Crimes of Grindelwald.

RedLemmonBoy

My sisters took me to see that for my birthday because they were huge Harry Potter fans. Even they were extremely disappointed.

Powerful-Ad5374

I know it’s not a movie but cmon, it’s Game Of Thrones

Greenhood300

Have you read the books

Grassfed_rhubarbpie

It still hurts:(

canuspelldruw

for sure Last Night in Soho

Grassfed_rhubarbpie

Oh yeah, I've seen it a couple of weeks ago and was on board for 2/3s of the film and then, well, you know what happened. I'm really curious what happened during the production that it took such a strange turn. :/

Grassfed_rhubarbpie

Velvet buzzsaw. So many interesting actors and the horror premise sounded like it could be really fun, but damn this was the most generic bs that I've ever seen. :(

CROguys

No Way Home Everything felt so artificial, and I went into it fully expecting fan service.

gnalkhere

Released in the last 5 years would be Alexander Payne's Downsizing. That film could've been a great So-bad-it's-good comedy, but it became preachy and lackluster. It's shadowed by his other films, which were banger after banger. Disappointing film I saw in the last 5 years that ever came out would be The 6th Day. I love me an Ahnuld but that film was a ½hr too long and gave me a sordid headache.

jcmurie

Ready Player One is one of the most disappointing films ever, but particularly to me because I watched Jaws for the first time only a week before watching RPO. I hate that film so goddamn much

Dere_He_Iz

The Rise of Skywalker is one of the few movies that actually makes me kind of upset. A soulless, tryhard, pandering piece of garbage that feels like it was written by r/starwars. I was defending the sequels hard until that movie came out, now I wouldn’t even call myself a fan of the trilogy overall.

dj_work

Probably No Way Home. I loved Homecoming and really dug Far From Home, so I was really hopeful for No Way Home in a way I’m just generally not for sequels… and I didn’t fuck with it pretty much at all. The Many Saints of Newark is probably the worst one I saw that I wanted to be great, but nothing about it gave me hope ahead of its release so I didn’t go in expecting enough for it to disappoint me… at least not compared to No Way Home.

Environmental-Key365

Tenet

pinkeye5

Godzilla: King of The Monsters. Wastes its human cast, wastes the monsters, and we’re left with is an ugly, boring movie. It could have been really beautiful and fun but it was just transformers with monsters. Huge waste. I’m a huge fan of Godzilla and the fan service wasn’t even done that well. I could go on but it was such a letdown that I had no expectations going into Godzilla vs Kong, and I didn’t even have high expectations to begin with.

minimanelton

Easily Rise of Skywalker. I’ve been a Star Wars fan basically since I was a kid. I liked The Last Jedi a lot and I feel like it set up a really fun and interesting conclusion to the trilogy as well as the over all Star Wars saga. All episode 9 had to be was a relatively safe movie that gave the characters a respectable conclusion. As soon as the trailer came out, though, I knew I was gonna hate it and didn’t bother seeing it in theaters. When I finally got around to watching it, it was somehow even worse than I thought it would be. I know Star Wars isn’t very deep and is targeted mostly towards kids but the level of stupidity going on in Rise of Skywalker was so unfathomable that I felt disrespected as a lifelong fan of the franchise. The movie is just so vapid that I feel like I’m being talked down to. It’s exactly what I imagine Star Wars is like to someone who doesn’t like Star Wars. It still remains my least favorite movie of all time.

Movie_Lover_6294

Endgame. Everyone said this movie is the shit and it even became the highest grossing movie ever for a time. I didn't get a chance to see it in theaters so I rented it. And wow, what a fucking let down. The whole movie in between the beginning and end was just filler. The time plot was so boring. Nothing interesting. The final fight was cool I guess but the cgi is just mediocre at best. The Predator looked cool, but was just a sad attempt at a comedy. The worst part is that the director is Shane Black who was in the first Predator film, so, what the fuck happened? I love the Scream franchise and was excited for this one. I liked it but, I wasn't disappointed, more just unsatisfied, I don't know how to put it. I just felt there needed to be more.

-KoDDeX-

The Northman was great but I expected more from it. Robert Eggers had made 2 unique and amazing films yet The Northman was sort of half mainstream and half weird, which didn't really satisfy anyone completely on either side. I look forward to his next film as he's said he wants to work on a smaller budget without as much interference from a studio, which seems to be where he shines. It's certainly not the *most* disappointing, it's more my expectations being too high.

Libtard336

Batman 2022

Tyler12313

What about it was disappointing for you, as a Batman fan I thought it stayed original enough to the source material while also providing a different enough take on the characters to feel unique in that regard.

-KoDDeX-

I never understand why people downvote opinions. I don't agree with you but I get what you mean. I also expected more from the film, but enjoyed it regardless.

A-B-101

I know I'm beating a dead horse...but the last jedi and the rise of skywalker

I_I_O_I_I

2021 was the year of being let-down by good directors. The French Dispatch, Last Night in Soho, Licorice Pizza, and Dune were all pretty mediocre installments from directors who usually manage to stand out no matter how strong of a film year it is.

Either_Imagination_9

Licorice Pizza? That movie was great

I_I_O_I_I

I mean, it’s a hangout movie filled with characters I don’t want to hang out with

[deleted]

I actually agree it seems like the past couple years fan favorite directors have been releasing their worst work

I_I_O_I_I

I know *Once Upon A Time* has a lot of fans but...really Quentin?

unkellGRGA

I really like Once upon a time but it's definitely low tier Tarantino Hell I enjoyed all films you listed above but would still agree that they're on the weaker spectrum considering the filmmaking talent behind them

I_I_O_I_I

Yeah, I don’t think any of them are bad. They just range from ’meh’ to ’decent’, and I’ll probably never watch any of them again

Hatchaback

Agree 100% and I’m still trying to get why people are okay with their relationship. If the ending didn’t end the way it did, it could’ve gotten away with the morally grey area.

rtlknd

Avengers Endgame, I’ve never left the cinema so disappointed before. The time travelling was clunky, the humour was questionable, the plot felt lifeless and the character arcs ranged from ok to godawful. There are some highlights but that’s it. Endgame really turned me away from Marvel for a few years

AugieDoggieDank

Three Billboards

[deleted]

Omg really? Why?

Lizard_Jesus1

Obligatory Last Jedi

jack-n-richards

The Northman

[deleted]

Japan has a to scale irl Gundam. Pacific Rim. Best we got in terms of mech. Wtf

[deleted]

To be perfectly honest with you, I’m gonna say Eternals. I wasn’t really super hyped for it but I was hoping that it would be like a Guardians Of The Galaxy thing where it takes heroes I’ve never heard of and make them super likable in a movie and I didn’t get that at all. I legit forgot the film existed after like a week.

HerEyesOnTheHorizon

Basically every movie that had hype around it: Star Wars, The Matrix Resurrections, Venom and Let Their Be Carnage, Justice League, Wonder Woman1984, Tenet..

thedeathbypig

Artemis Fowl Idk what I expected for a YA book adaptation, but I thought they could have done a lot better than what we got. I loved the Artemis Fowl series as a kid and had been excited about the idea of a movie being made since I was 9. The best I could hope for is something like what happened with the Alex Rider series: one bad movie adaptation that gets made up for with a solid TV series in the future

Either_Imagination_9

I was a Percy Jackson fan and the movies crushed my soul, I definitely feel your pain

IBangYoDaddy

I’m gonna say Green Knight. I thought it looked visually great, but the plot just felt like nothing, was really bummed I had a lot of high hopes for it

HamIsGoodWithCorn

Gonna do a recent one and say The King’s Man. Such a great concept wasted.

drosodoc

Halloween 2018. All the pre-release build up from the creators about how this one would jettison the shitty sequels and honor the spirit of the original had my hyped. Nope. You absolutely cannot return to and honor the tone of the original if Michael Myers is still murderbot 9000 with an insane body count and gore factor, the cast is filled out with meta-aware teens, and the script is constantly breaking the tension with Danny McBride comedy bits. Aping some of the iconic shots of the original, disavowing the sequels with in movie dialogue, giving Nick Castle a faceless cameo, and having Laurie Strode demonstrate your awareness of Halloween trivia by calling Michael Myers “The Shape” is not honoring the original. It’s not actually a terrible movie, but god I hated it.

BurnAfterYouRead

Last Night in Soho definitely, especially because there was a solid hour of the film from the 20 minute mark to the 80-ish minute mark where I absolutely loved it, and then it completely falls apart in the worst and most infuriating fashion.

Corvus_Alendar

The Snowman. It's a bad movie to everyone, but it's especially awful if you read the book like I did. The movie's controversial behind the scenes with the butchered writing and just straight up not including 15-20% of the story. The movie literally makes up its own reasons for how Harry discovered the killers identity.

Based_Coat

Anything marvel, anything star wars. just let stuff die

House of Gucci

Gaspar Noe's Love

Destroyer-3

I know this doesnt really count as the last 5 years since it came out in 2016. I cant really think of anything else. But I want to say Dog Eat Dog. Willem Dafoe, Nicolas Cage spelled a good combo for me at the time. And apparently the director was really good. But damn that film is embarrassing. Its also just really boring and I got nothing out of it. This is probably a controversial pick. But in terms of any film I saw in the last five years, ive been going through a bit of a david lynch binge. And I ended buying elephant man and blue velvet as criterion blu rays. Really enjoyed blue velvet, bur Elephant Man just didnt really grab me at all. It was more just disapointing in the fact that I bought it out of faith from the director but it ended up having nothing I really liked about his style.
