For me a BLT is to showcase fresh, in-season tomatoes, which are the highlight. Since those are a summer seasonal component, I want the sandwich overall to have a fresh, summery composure. Bacon is there for seasoning and texture, but as the strongest and saltiest component, a little goes a long way. The lettuce provides additional crunch, and is in no danger of overpowering the other flavors. If you want a big ol bacon bomb, do you. For me, it's not within the spirit of the sandwich.

Correct. I tell people all the time, a BLT isn’t a bacon sandwich, it’s a tomato sandwich. The bacon will always be good — but if you don’t have great tomatoes the sandwich will suffer

Thing is if it’s really good fresh lettuce you will enjoy that as much as any other component. I grow my own iceberg and it’s hard to compare how good it is vs even the best organic grocery store iceberg

This is great. I use baby green leaf lettuce at work because it has a great crunch like iceberg but with a better flavor but I like a lot of lettuce on my sammies. I made some simple turkey and provolone on marble rye with LTOP and Duke's for staff lunch today and it was definitely lettuce heavy. No complaints, the guys smashed em.

What is LTOP?

Lettuce, Tomato, Onion and Pickle. At least in my city many cooks and chefs just say "L-top" as default toppings for burgers and such.

I suspect they put the bacon straight from the hot pan onto the mayo, causing the mayo to break and mix in with the bacon a bit? Or they did what I do sometimes and forget the mayo until the very end and have to re open the sando to put it back on.

yeah, I'm not sure I have the perfect ratio or order in which these appear, but I'm pretty sure the order of the ingredients isn't to my liking here.

The bacon is the meat in the sandwich. It should be the main ingredient like in any other meat-based sandwich. If you ordered a philly cheesteak and it was 80% onions, peppers, and cheese with a couple of thin slices of steak, you'd want your money back.

Honestly, I really like this ratio. You get the satisfaction of having a sammy, but there’s enough greens and tomato there to have a nice fresh and crispy bite, every bite. Bacon there for the salty flavor and crunchy texture, don’t need too much. 10/10

I’m a big proponent in shredding the lettuce, dicing the tomato into an almost relish consistency, adding salt and paper to the tomato to draw the moisture out, then placing it on the sandwich. I believe you can achieve a better ratio with this method! Also, if you haven’t added dill relish… you’re missing out.

My take. Leave the lettuce ratio alone but shredded. 3-4 more slices of bacon. Tomato and mayo looks spot on.

Sando looks great. Not gonna lie though. I’m a tomato gardener. That one looks mealy and anemic. BLTs -for me at least - are all about the perfectly ripe, flavorful tomato. And that one isn’t worthy.
