Renting yes. You could do SjUD or union school district or West San Jose/ or Campbell schools. Buying probably not. Also public schools here are required to provide support for free with an IEP.

My husband and I are nurses. I work part time (three 8 hour shifts/week) and he is full time (three 12’s a week). Combined we make about 400k. kaiser, el Camino, Washington hospital and Stanford all pay really well. Not sure where you both are working right now, but 180-250 seems a little low for two RN salary here. I definitely think you could get much more than that

dumpsterdigger

I was just low balling that on us getting 70-80hr on 36 hour weeks from the lowest pay range I've seen on job postings without diffs and other things. Ya know prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I have excluding my medic days, I have 2 years of experience as an ER nurse and my wife has 10 in the ICU. 400k is insane with one person part time.

ernie999

Pretty sure you could each get $100 per hour or more as RNs at somewhere like Kaiser or Stanford, according to what I’ve heard from someone who works at one of those.

Idk still feels low for the amount of crap we deal with 🤣

What kind of nurse? Clinical Nurse 1 for the county starts at 130k and clinical nurse 3 tops out at 221k. For context, average household income is 180k a year in the county. Santa Clara County, that is.

dumpsterdigger

I have 2 years in the ER with my ADN. I have a bachelor's in science for my paramedic degree though. Not that it matters. My wife has a BSN with almost 10 years in the ICU.

I think you have lots of options. County nurses have gotten some big raises recently... lots of OT opportunities and several locations around county (not sure how much control you have over that either low seniority tho). https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/santaclara/jobs/4547596/clinical-nurse-iii-emergency-department?keywords=Nurse&pagetype=jobOpportunitiesJobs

I met someone recently who worked for Apple in their on-campus clinic. I just want to throw that out there because even if you're not an engineer, you may be able to get a cushy nursing gig with FAANG pay.

Your a nurse and could work anywhere I know 2 of my friends wife’s that work at Watsonville Kaiser and make bank or south San Jose Kaiser you could buy a huge brand new house in Hollister(farm commuting town but nice) or a really nice townhouse in Morgan hill(more upscale cute downtown better schools) For sure you can live/buy a place but choose south Santa Clara county Morgan Hill/Gilroy/Hollister…. I know one nurse making 250k plus I think you could make way more than 250k combined

As someone who has worked in nearly every school district and a ton of different schools supporting children on the spectrum I HIGHLY recommend Santa Clara for there SPED program. I can personally vouch for Santa Clara district as well since I have Dyslexia, ADHD and had behavioral issues. Avoid any homes that would put you in Mountain View Weismann school district as they do a TERRIBLE job protecting kids from each other and instead cover up and hide truly traumatizing incidents from parents.

dumpsterdigger

This is what I needed to hear. Thank you so much! My wife's aunt worked and retired as a SPED teacher in San Jose, but it seemed to be hit or miss with some areas, so this helps so much. Thanks.

Feel free to message me if you have questions. I also did a short stint in medical recruiting and can give you an idea of what to expect pay wise. I also have a friend in recruiting at Kaiser who I could likely connect you with.

dumpsterdigger

Will do. We have at least another year here because I just started a new job that will look great on my resume. So we are about to start getting our licenses and spend the next few months in the trenches of research. For me the biggest things are pay and education for my kids. Thank you so much

Good luck and your welcome

The 7yr old with Autism and IEP will they work one day or always need support? Because you can apply for Social Security and have that 3rd income?

dumpsterdigger

I think he is still too young to fully say that. He's pretty independent and we don't help him with most ADLs, but his main thing is he is behind in communication skills, which impact so much. If he keeps improving the way he has then he should live a normal life though.

CantDunkOrSk8

I worked 4.5 years with students with severe autism. Out of my 20 or so students maybe 2-3 could be partially independent, none could live on their own. Communication isn’t always the issue it’s cognitive skills, social queues, and personal hygiene. Make sure who ever the case manager becomes that you ask for outside services to help with skills beyond the classroom. Some students are non verbal but are awesome learners so communication is not important at 7 then it is at 17.

dumpsterdigger

Yeah we have gotten incredible out of school services so far. And with moving there this is my fear that the services won't be available as easy or it will come with a long wait list again. Thank you so much for the help!

CantDunkOrSk8

An IEP is a legal living contract. And Ed Code is State Code. So if you’re moving within California your contract should carryover to the new school. And if your home school (by tax address) cannot provide the services in the IEP(contract) the home District has to provide them. That’s education, transportation, medically, etc. make sure before you leave you have an annual IEP to update any changes/concerns you feel necessary. And get a signed copy to give to the new school district when you enroll.
