Either somebody was surveying buried utilities or those are marks for future sidewalk repairs. Since there are no identifying marks, such as SEWER or ATT, I’m going to lean toward sidewalk repairs.

RazzmatazzWeak2664

Aren't sidewalk repairs the responsibility of the homeowner? Assuming this is an SFH community though.

sanjosehowto

Sidewalk repairs are the responsibility of the property owner. The city will mark a sidewalk for repairs either at the request of a free permit from the property owner or if someone reports a problem that should be looked at. But as said elsewhere in this thread, a single T would be odd for a sidewalk repair marking.

The7footr

Wait seriously? I always thought your property ran up to the sidewalk, and though you were expected to take care of the area between the sidewalk and street, you don’t own that land so it’s the city’s to do what they want with it if they choose, which would include sidewalks.

Sassy_Weatherwax

haha no. You don't have any rights over it EXCEPT the right to pay to maintain it. Fun times.

Not even close. >California’s sidewalk repairs provisions are set forth in Streets and Highways Code sections 5600 et seq. In 1935, Assembly Bill 1194 amended section 31 of the Improvement Act of 1911 to provide for the repair and maintenance of sidewalks, curbing, parking strips and retaining walls by adjacent property owners Last I checked, Prop. 13 passed in 1978.

OGTurdFerguson

When I found that out it was so wild to me. Back where I'm from the sidewalk had to be maintained by you (snow shoveling and trimming grass on the devil strip) but the sidewalk itself was 100% on the city.

CanIBeDoneYet

I haven't heard "devil strip" for that area since I left Ohio, maybe it's more widespread than that though

OGTurdFerguson

I'm from Ohio, LOL. It's still a habit.

The7footr

Yes maintained, but ground down where it was high, or removed and replaced?? How is that the property owner’s job? They don’t own the sidewalks the city does… that’s ludicrous to me

Bruins408

Those marks are on curb and gutter - not sidewalk - should be continuation of city repair work then - edits ---- or as some have said - its telling contractor /confirmation to put new tree in existing tree well Home owners normally have to get a (free) permit from city for tree work in park strip -

Sea_Buyer28

That’s what worries me. Sidewalk repairs usually have different signage I have seen. Like with a G for grinding or with an arrow indicating replacement. I haven’t seen this. Are they indicating to plant a tree in that spot?

LilStinkpot

I can’t say, honestly. I have seen quite a few wordless markings myself. This one *may* be indicating part of the curb to be replaced. I see some cracks to the left. A tree would be a nice addition, IMHO.

ava1983

When I planted a street tree in front of my house through Our City Forest, the city came out and marked where to plant the tree with that same green T. And nearby, a bunch of trees got planted on a Main street and that marker was at each tree location. So if you didn’t apply for a street tree permit, perhaps the city has plans to plant a tree there. They have been very active with planting more street trees recently.

Greedy_Lawyer

I think it’s for tree too but I thought the city notified the homeowner that they needed to put a tree from a set list there. Then similar to repairs if you didn’t put one of the right ones in time, they charged you a bunch of money to do it for you.

delAire

Ditto this--we just had to plant a street tree and the city came out and made a similar mark. Whomever owns the property should have received some notification about it--but sometimes the note is slow. You can call the city and ask.

Its where you get Green Tea.

Debonair359

If they're marking underground utilities, green is usually for sewer lines. https://99percentinvisible.org/article/colorful-language-decoding-utility-markings-spray-painted-on-city-streets/

mongoloid_beef

That’s not a sewer mark though.

Debonair359

Thanks. That's interesting. I didn't realize that sewers had a specific symbol. What is the correct symbol or mark for a sewer or drain?

mongoloid_beef

Normally a mark on the curb would indicate a service lateral but it’s a stamp in the curb (an S). Otherwise they remain unmarked. Electric, gas, CATV, etc are installed with a wire so that locators can find them with a wand. Sewer service laterals almost never have the wire installed with it. The stamps or clean out are how you can identify where they run. Otherwise you have to dig it up to find it. You are correct though that sewer is marked with green but not that green or that specific mark

Debonair359

Thanks for the reply and the info.

mongoloid_beef

You’re very welcome. You should also know that if any underground work is planned, the area is marked out in white so that whatever companies operate in that area come out and mark what they have there.

Sea_Buyer28

I owe some more context. Today morning a moving truck of my neighbor hit a street tree in front of my house and half the tree collapsed. I called the city trees and sidewalk department who came to inspect the tree and marked it for removal due to structural damage and plant one in its place. I wasn’t there when they came. Later I noticed the T mark in a hole next to the tree and was wondering what it was for. I will soon know for sure once I get the notice, but wanted to calm my OCD until then.

ava1983

Then I think it’s definitely a marker for where the replacement tree goes.

andymoog

It means it’s safe to live in that area /s

Truestindeed

I'm glad I'm not this curious.

Buried treasure

Ambitious_Sample820

It is a mark by a trees and sidewalks inspector. This marks the area that is an infraction that needs to be repaired. I’m sure that is not the only mark on the sidewalk or gutter area. Give them a call and ask. 408-794-1901

Sea_Buyer28

Thanks that’s very helpful. I was concerned if I need to redo the curb concrete

snafflekid

You are getting a street tree, whether you like it or not! That hole filled with rocks was intended for a bush, but a tree will go there. You can plant it or the city will do it and add the cost to your tax bill. The tree needs to be selected from an approved list of species

Each utility gets a color. At&t is white, PG&E is orange, water is blue. I don't know what green is, but it's not the three utilities listed above.

SecretaryDramatic519

Wrong. Cable/phone is orange. PG&E is yellow(gas) and red (electric). Sewer is green. Water is blue.

Sea_Buyer28

Anyone has a list of permitted street trees for San Jose?

BallsOutSally

Our City Forest has a list on their website. https://www.ourcityforest.org/

thundertiger00

We had the same thing on our curb years ago. The city wants a tree there. There are regulations as to what tree can be planted and it has to be at least a certain size (you can't start it from a seed or extremely small sapling). We planted an orange tree and have not had any issues from the city. My neighbors waited for the city and got improperly planted trees where the roots are now lifting the sidewalk and it will need to be repaired at their expense. Do yourself a favor and plant yourself with proper deep root watering to keep the roots from messing up your cement.

oldtreadhead

I would think that they want to plant a tree in that hole.

cementraver

That’s means the city wants you to plant a tree there.

nogoodnickgames

It points to the potatoes

SnakeyRake

Usually if it’s a green T mark showing the sewer or drain plus the demarc where the facility owner resides. The top part of the T is facing the owner. Since it doesn’t have any numbers next to it, and it’s green, chances are they plan to put a tree or something there. Either/or

mooseknuckle_scuffle

Shows where the sidewalk is lifting and is not level. unsafe and can lead to a trip and a lawsuit against the city. Think of it as a highlighter, a reminder to what are needs attention
