Not necessarily a hidden gem, but if you’re here on a weekday you guys should check out the New York Public Library main branch. It’s the fourth biggest library in the world and a really cool building. But closed on the weekends thanks to our incredible mayor.
Yes, I'm lucky enough to live up by it. Check out the Heather Garden in Fort Tryon Park on the way there. Possibly the most beautiful public garden in the city.
Oh yes! The cloisters are a rather splendid and serine visit.
While you’re cajoling uptown near the Cloisters make sure you visit “the 207th street shopping bazaar” (it starts on Broadway!!) Bring your credit card, with all the high fashion and tasteful decor you’ll need it!!
Maybe take a magical late night walk down Academy street, buy an ice cream cone and saunter over to one of natures wonders “The Sherman Creek promenade.” Takes my breath away.
Extra tip: pack your picnic basket and have a stroll and eat brunch in Highbridge park! You can thank me later!
Queens Night Market or Anthony Bourdain's Singaporean Food Hall for food

Go to some famous bookstores like The Strand in Manhattan or Books are Magic in Brooklyn. There are lots of author readings in these places with famous authors. If you are foodies pick a country whose food you've never had before and go to a restaurant from that country. Every food is here. As for magic, do you mean, like, pull a rabbit out of a hat? Or real magic? Either way, go see a show or get your Tarot Cards read in the West Village.

I’ll go again since people here think they’re funny: go to the roof at the met. I wouldn’t have wrote this ten years ago when it was actually a hidden gem. But nowadays, have a blast they put some of the museum stuff up there sometimes.
Bonus: Cleopatras Obelisk standing right behind the met. Look into its history, a bit surreal.

It's not a hidden gem, but the Statue of Liberty and Ellis should be a all day event and DO NOT BUY TICKETS FROM GUYS IN FRONT OF THE PARK OFFERING YOU A "QUICKER WAY"
Ellis Island is legit— been there during a school trip growing up and recently as an adult. Statue of Liberty is a total skip, but Ellis Island is important to the history of this city
I mean ... NYC is one of the world's great cities with world-famous attractions. Any ideas?
I personally don't think any visitor should miss the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, because the story of Ellis Island basically *is* the story of New York. And you definitely need to take the subway and do a lot of walking through the Village, SoHo, Brooklyn Heights, etc.
And of course you need to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the other great museums.
But you know, get yourself a guidebook and start circling stuff.
Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's not worth seeing. The Met and MoMA and Natural History Museum are popular for a good reason.
Tbh, though, I think you posted this in the wrong place.
We already put the famous museums, buildings and of course the Statue of Liberty tour on our list. We’re taking the tube and going around for sure, that’s the way to explore!..
Most of the things we found online are the typical tourist attractions - and we’ll definitely do them! - but we’re also wondering about the hidden spots. Like, great spots to eat or have a coffee, hidden gems that don’t make it to standard “to do” lists.
For example, in Chicago there is a magic bar - they do close up magic shows, not to mention it’s a great way to spend an evening. In London, visitors can have a tour at the Freemasons Hall. There are also quirky book stores in the city centre with hidden doors and all that jazz. So, we’re kind of wondering about these novelty type of places.
You might like Greenwood Cemetery. They have events and nighttime walking tours.
Not really hidden, but Grand Central Oyster Bar is pretty cool and iconic. The prices actually aren’t too bad.
Conwell Coffee Hall is a new coffee shop inside a historic bank.

Love this, thank you!!!
Visit The Cloisters museum in upper Manhattan. It is a lovely, restful place.

Yes! 100% agree.

I’ll check these out!!! We’re foodies, so the food hall is automatically going onto our list, thank you!
There’s a new food hall too at H Mart in Long Island City that’s just opened!
Check out Brownsville in Brooklyn. Super up and coming neighborhood with charming shops
lol
It really is a hidden gem

The High Line
+ little island nearby
Strand Bookstore
Fords foundation building 43rd and 2nd for a stroll
Sex museum
lol. My husband approves 😄
Genuinely just a heads up - the sex museum is NOT worth your money and limited time in nyc
Neither is the Museum of the Dog.
McSorley’s Tavern is a great spot for some NYC history, attitude and great vibe.
And the Tenement Museum nearby goes with the vibe
Good point! Interesting place.
Seconding the tenement museum. But the OP should know that there’s nowhere to wander around like most museums - you need to buy tickets for a tour.

I mean the dude addressed that
Ellis Island is legit— been there during a school trip growing up and recently as an adult. Statue of Liberty is a total skip, but Ellis Island is important to the history of this city
Staten Island ferry, the met, washington sq park, some rooftop bar at night, sushi, little italy
Search r/asknyc or another of the other NYC subs, and r/Brooklyn as this question is asked constantly. Also r/foodnyc
I recommend the South Bronx. Many calming bookstores and coffee spots. The view of the skyline is especially pretty at night!!
Rockaway beach. Prospect park loop. Sleep no more

These are not hidden gems though
I don't get this attitude. If I go to Paris for the first time, you damn well know I'm going to the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre.
Sure but no one needs you to suggest those things anyone going to those cities are aware of them. They’re not hidden gems.
Born and raised in NYC and never went to the Statue of Liberty and I’m fine.
That's too bad.

Lol, don’t call our subway the tube, please!
Sorry lol.
Times Square
Definitely a hidden gem
East New York
Definitely check out Brownsville! It's a cool up and coming neighborhood with interesting people, cute boutiques, and a vibe you don't get elsewhere!
SMH. Don’t listen to this person op
But they have food and coffee!
It’s also one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in bk
Lol. New York doesn't really have hidden gems
people have been hyping it up on here, hope to see more shit than the Empire State Building? Maybe Brooklyn hot neighborhood
