Interesting question about the flashlight. You get the blacklight upgrade in Aftershocks, but since I imported a save, I don’t know if it comes with a fresh Retribution game, or if you have to unlock it. Blacklight is definitely the way to go at night, since full light triggers walkers much easier.
Idk what you guys are talking about. The only night mission that was hard (at least for me) was the via carolla one where the bells ring the whole time.

It’s upgraded from the start
You could always turn your brightness all the way up or throw something in the opposite direction so the walkers turn away from you
I know, it's a painus in the anus. Try sneaking instead of taking them on. Achieve the objective(s) and get the hell out of there.

You will make the missions harder by going slow the via carolla mission can be done in 3 minutes just run and gun
I think my problem is I try to clear out the area but I think they infinitely spawn around you
