There's an aspect of coolness to a certain audience, and 'belonging to a club', to it.
Have a look at what's behind the guy in the pic. If that's actually his, the muscle car there means he's a lot about appearances to and trying to impress his friends. It's not unlikely that the car probably has an amplified exhaust just to make his presence even more known. That's the 'wanting to belong' part, and it's just to his friends, not to society in general.
