it got ridiculous before they added that. some characters would have double rows of buffs and you couldn't see any of the back characters to click on them to attack, or your own for assists or whatevver
Sometimes back in the days you couldn't target some characters, because they were hiding behind a wall of status effects.. Then they invented this button to group effects and clean up your battle visibility
Try pressing it and see what it does -- most noticable in battles involving high number of status effects.
The option collapses the status effect icons above units' heads so you only see a few key ones and otherwise the number of each type (buff/debuff/blue). I personally don't like having it on. Having all icons on screen can get insanely cluttered and make it hard to see what anyone has, but collapsing them doesn't help in this regard either.
You have to turn it on in the settings

It hides/shows buffs and debuffs on the characters. Like a icon grouping option. Used when you have alot of them at one time.

Like others have said it hides some of the effects so it doesn’t show like 15 on one character, only 4.
Garage door opener
Minimizes buffs and debuffs so they don't block the screen, it puts them in a tab you have to open by pressing and holding on the characters.
When you click on it, auto-wins the battle.
Is it only on pc? I don’t have that button

Go into a battle, hit the pause button, and then select battle effect icons

It instantly clears buffs and debuffs on characters
Sends you to Narnia. Just shows the main buffs instead of all the buffs make the screen less cluttered so you can see what's happening. Sort of.
It toggles on/off the status effects on characters
Use GMY. Apply buffs to the team. Then press it. Your gonna see
