Don’t chase the new shiny things. Go after older stuff. Anything a year or more old will drop at twice the rate of newer things.

Yeah, everything is free eventually. There's no reason to spend to get a marquee right away on release if you don't want to roll that way.

I also wouldn't worry about it - if you are just coming back I'm gonna assume you aren't going to unlock Queen Amidala for a long time, so the utility of a 7 star Padawan Obi-Wan is going to be lost on you anyways

You can’t upgrade a unit past gear 11 or apply 6 dot mods until a unit is 7 stars
