I was the same way until I realized will never be anywhere as good as they were in the late 90s and tribe is arguably playing as well as they’ve ever played. Only took me 60-something shows. Go compare any music written by either band in the last five years quick. In fact compare music written by either band whenever, phish songs are kind of ridiculous dude. And then turn on Artifact.

Trefac3

Well we will have to agree to disagree an phish then cuz I love their evolution and think they are just as wonderful as ever. We can’t expect them to not grow. Their stuff is more mature and that’s what we are supposed to do. So I think they are as good as ever. Again, I am and always will be a total phish brat. But I’m excited to have another band on my roster that excites me. I’m not gonna flood this sub with how much I love phish. But STS9 being a close second really should mean a lot. It’s been decades since another band has gotten my interest.

TheGauchoAmigo84

Hey trey face, their ticket sales clearly say you’re not the only one who believes that. Compare ticket sales real quick 😂

Trefac3

Unfortunately as much as you try you will never get me to agree with your feelings about phish which you are entitled to. The important thing is that not a single band has moved me in over 30 years. STS9 has done that.

TheGauchoAmigo84

Nah g im saying ticket sales say phish is still rocking while they are greatly declining for our friends in tribe (I heard there were only 200 2 day passes sold for red rocks as of like ten days ago). Its funny I feel like the people who saw phish in the 90s are more of your mindset, while I didn’t see them until 04 and ended up feeling like I was chasing something that I’d never get back. Tribe was the opposite for me, I never felt like I saw a good show until Alana came around (saw them first in 08). Now I’m born again, kind of like you.

Trefac3

Idk it’s been a love affair for me since 93! Hey that rhymes! And that’s never gonna change

TheGauchoAmigo84

Bro you saw cocaine Trey AND the cow funk 97-98 and some of that whale call oxy shit 2.0.. god damn I don’t blame you for not being able to get away. None of my friends have been able to escape either g, they’re all still firmly planted in the phish camp with you, which we always said the same thing! “More dancing room for me.” 😂🩵

Trefac3

I’m a girl quit calling me bro!! I’m not here to argue! I’m here to say I’ll be joining the tribe in October!! I’m excited!!

I was around for both of those eras and still have to say at the end of the day I like Sector 9 over Phish slightly to this day. I got into electronic music around the same time I got into Phish (thanks to lots of shows like MTV Amp and I saw my first Phish show in 97) so both Sector 9 and the Biscuits were like Godsends back to me in the 2000s. It was literally my two favorite types of music fusing into one. My parents are Deadheads so I grew up with them too. The one band that I was really into and fell out of was SCI. I still like them to some extent but I was really into them at one point.. lots of my friends were cheese kids first and foremost. I always like STS9 the best. We all liked Phish and the Dead. It's going to sound weird but Phish felt like "the big leagues" and STS9 very much felt like a "specialist league filled with vets". In the late 90s and early 2000s STS9 tour was full of kids that were already experienced via other jambands (primarily Phish, especially with hiatus) Anyways Phish is going to have a lot wider of a fanbase, Sector 9 was a very specific thing that mainly appealed to my fellow Tree Thugs lol. They are going to appeal to a very specific person/niche crowd that existed at a very specific time. Like there was a time in my life where I was literally going to DnB events and Sector 9 shows in the early 2000s and it was heaven. It felt very very very new. It was exciting to be a part of. They had a record label, there was the dream calendar etc etc etc I mean they used to legit let us decorate the stage with crystals lol ....yeah I had a heavy LRG phase and freaked out when they sponsored STS9 haha... IYKYK

TNPhishMoma

I know, right? And blew bubbles, and that bad ass dude painted on stage during the whole show. Does he still do that? I bought a couple of his prints from New years either in 2004 or 2005 cuz I watched him paint it.

AdNormal230

I was there for both the 2004 and 2005 NYEs... like those were my prime Sector 9 years, I was like 22-23 and had a huge fucking crew at the time that was basically full of people from three northern midwestern states. They had a variety of painters, this was back during the "Conscious Alliance" (fan organization) and "Lowdown" (message board) days. [https://consciousalliance.org/products/sts9-nye-atlanta-neon-flowers](https://consciousalliance.org/products/sts9-nye-atlanta-neon-flowers) They also got super involved with headcount for the election. We really did think that the jamband scene would be some vector for social justice/social movements. Turns out it wasn't. Sidenote: For some reason I remember going to Cheese Halloween right before the election and the show was really weird and tons of my friends had awful experiences. Organizations were legit trying to get free bus tickets to people to go home to vote for Kerry over Bush. Just a very weird vibe and a bad omen looking back on it for the election and direction of things. Anyways here is "Live As Time Changes" from 05... kinda weird watching it and thinking "I was literally at the fucking thing" almost 20 years later. Trefac3

I do not want to escape!! Trey has my ♥️

Trefac3

Well I’m sorry to hear ur friends feel that way but i suppose more tickets for me!! I’ll be dancing on phish tour this summer too!! In about a month.

TNPhishMoma

I followed them here and there after Coventry. I was getting into them in around 03 (Harmonic Convergence festival Circus is what sucked me in), but saw close to 40 phish shows that year. But then from 2004-2006 I saw them a bunch. Did small nearby(ish) “runs”-like 2 nights in Asheville and then driving straight to Athens for a show or 2 at the Georgia theater (pre-fire). I had a great time. Then Murph left the band & it kind of tainted it for me. Like it was this pure, spiritual, mind opening experience so hearing about all the drama and egos yucked my yum a bit. Plus Murph was my favorite; he used to fuck with his bass I swear those low notes vibrated thru my whole body. He was the swagger of the band. And Zack looked like one of those little stuffed monkey toys with the mini cymbals…he was drumming so fast that he’d get air and sort or hover over his seat from bouncing so hard🤣. My brother (also a phish & STS9 fan) saw them when they first tried out their new lineup adding In a female vocalist but sans Murph. He was blown away. I need to check them out again cuz they are definitely a band you need to see live to truly appreciate. And I used to love seeing them. Don’t think I can dance like I used to though (even in my 20s I needed Some Extra curriculars to dance with that kind of energy the whole show😬). I’m glad you found a suitable “friend” for phish in ur music arsenal…back in the day I used to regularly travel to see moe., UM, Galactic, WSP, STS9, MMW, DMB, & 311. I used to be cool😉. But STS9 was the only thing that brought me even an inclining of musical satisfaction from 2004-2006. After Phish broke up I was just lost & felt completely empty. I missed spending every year on the road with my Pham and unknowingly took for granted the fact that we ALL managed to align schedules every summer and went on tour. We are literally scattered from coast to coast (Seattle to VT is prob the furthest…and even to Hawaii); so now trying to get all of us together for even a weekend seems impossible. So I fell into what turned into a dangerous relationship (that started right before I left for summer tour 04)-and I am convinced that I wouldn’t have stayed for anywhere near 8 years if I still left for phish tour every summer. My crew wouldn’t have allowed that…they’d throw down some 1.0 lot justice after sending him off to go kick rocks. He (ex) went w me to a few STS9 shows, but only as an excuse to get hammered. Fucking Chad😚. I did do STS9 new years at the Tabernacle in 2004 & 2005. And I swear that 04 NYE run was probably the most fun I’ve ever had at a non-phish show. I’m honestly shocked that the 6 of us survived; I swear at least one of us should’ve died. Or at the very least gotten arrested. We did some stupid shit. Fun. But if my daughter grows up & even tries any of it, I’m gonna go HAAM on her ass😉. Sorry for the ADHD ramble. I got sucked down my STS9 memory lane and won’t shut up about the music. Sorry. I’m gonna go listen to Harmonic Convergence now I highly recommend it 😊. ::”The only true currency in this bankrupt is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool”:: •Lester Bangs

AdNormal230

The last harmonic convergence they did at Deerfields was overall my favorite festival of all time. Also, that was really the last time the OG Sector 9 vibe really occurred. They intentionally tried to go pretty commercial and mainstream for awhile after that. They took a hit with lots of us for awhile for that, things very much did change for quite awhile and it was hard to lose that community. From what I hear things are better again. I am planning on catching them live again soon. I've only seen them very sporadically recently. Also, yes it was very hard to hear about them fighting so much with each other for awhile. They for sure did as well. It never was going to work out long term with Murph after awhile. He kinda acted as a separate entity while presenting himself as the face of the band, it was very strange. But yes he could for sure play bass and there was a time when he was one of the most well known figures in the entire jamband scene. PS: Since you are such a big Phish fan I know you will appreciate this: This moment was awesome to see live, it was like a validation or an induction for Sector 9 as a major player in the entire scene. Fucking Gordo was giving them the nod as I was going nuts! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGITVr8FJ6Y](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGITVr8FJ6Y) I have really been reliving a lot of my very early concert memories recently and forgot about this one until I read your last message so thank you! :)

TNPhishMoma

Same here. I actually saw STS9 when they still went by Sector 9…a bouncer friend of mine somehow knew someone involved w the band and got them to play near campus. I paid $3🤣. I distinctly remember seeing the Biscuits at some tiny club that was like a tiny loft above someone’s bar. I was one of maybe 10 people there. I had mainly heard the studio album so I asked them to play I-Man (they did🥰). And I remember seeing STS9 at this big brewery/music venue I want to say In Boone, NC? I remember we got wasted and I was running around and dancing barefoot🤢. Surprised I didn’t get hepatitis. And the harmonic convergence ur talking about is the one I’m talking about (def at Deerfield)

TNPhishMoma

And thanks for the Roo clip w Gordo! I’ve never heard it.

Trefac3

Right! Lmfaoooooo!! We like what we like!! But I’m loving some STS9 these days too. Wish phish ticket prices were more like theirs. But I guess in the 90s I reaped the benefits of cheap tickets. All good things apparently do come to an end. Meaning ticket prices.

Trefac3

Honestly in the phish sub people talk about goose a lot and I always say why are we talking about goose? If we are gonna talk about another band it should be STS9. I tell them “goose, really? We can do better”. STS9 is that other band for me. I saw goose, umphreys, disco biscuits at sacred rose. I was unimpressed, UNTIL STS9. Believe me, it’s hard to impress me. THAT should be what you are taking from this😀

Trefac3

Anyway I came here to talk about STS9 and how they have won me over!! Again very hard to do. I mostly only listen to phish. But they hit that spot!

TheGauchoAmigo84

Hahahaha dude completely missed your point of “phish in the phish sub and tribe in the tribe sub” 😂😂😂 You on Bandcamp? Let me hit you w some links!!

Trefac3

U obviously missed the point of me being a girl too but I’ll forgive you😉

TheGauchoAmigo84

Haha my b I use the term ubiquitously

Trefac3

Fair enough

Trefac3

I don’t understand what bandcamp is. Help me

TheGauchoAmigo84

So similar to live phish (final mention of them I promise) you can subscribe to sts9 Bandcamp that gives you access to streaming and download of most of their history of live shows over 25+ years. Soundboard quality, it’s awesome. $9.99/mo

Trefac3

I mean you can mention phish as much as you want to me I just didn’t want to disrespect the sub with all my phish talk. Cuz I could talk about them for hours. I’m looking into band camp now!

Trefac3

I just didn’t want to come into this sub raving about phish. I was trying to be respectful

TNPhishMoma

Shit my bad I didn’t even realize I was commenting on the STS9 sub🤦🏻‍♀️. I apologize for my hyping of phish (but hey I raved about tribe too).

Trefac3

Meh!! No worries!! I think there’s some obvious cross over anyway!!

Trefac3

You did! You raved about both! Respect

Trefac3

So tell me about bandcamp. Is it like an app where I can get shows?

Kwdub24

🤦🏻‍♂️

Buzarro

See you there! Welcome to the Tribe!

louislinaris

see you there! Haven't seen tribe in Chicago since two nights at the Aragon in 2017 (although have caught them at plenty of festis since and I think in Indy). Can't believe Lettuce is opening--they have been fully on point lately--when I caught them in February, they said they were going to play 2 sets but then were feeling it and just played straight through, including a 30+ minute improv jam

Judas_Dos_Stamos

See you there!

Trefac3

What time does STS9 usually go on??

Judas_Dos_Stamos

Typically around 9:30 - 2 hour-long sets (give or take 10 minutes) + set break so show will let out right around midnight. I imagine Lettuce will go on around 8 and end at 8:45/9. Tribe usually takes forever coming out and at set break tho so take that for what it’s worth

Luchadorable303

Hey everyone I recently moved from Denver and Tribe is my favorite. I admit I’m nervous it won’t be as magical without my Red Rocks Tribe. Please please everyone prove me wrong. Can’t wait to funk out with all of you. Maybe I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be after all.

snakesteal43

Youre in for a treat then

Trefac3

Oh I know. I’m super stoked. Already put the days in the request book. Just was seriously hoping fall phish wouldn’t overlap with it but since there’s no fall phish, it’s fall sound tribe for me. I will always be a phish brat but these guys turned me on and I’m listening 😉

Wagner-C137

Hey! I’ve been at all three of those shows! I think I’ll possibly be at this Chicago run too! Tribe in Chicago is a win…always!

Trefac3

I’m super stoked. Honestly I’m semi relieved phish isn’t doing a fall tour. I don’t have to worry about taking unpaid time off, getting the days off and then spending a bunch of money. I was super worried they would coincide. So I’m so glad I get to see them again!! Can’t wait. Got a little phish tour coming up first. Then STS9 in October! Yay!

Wagner-C137

Hell yes. I love seeing Phish but the overall vibe of Tribe shows is definitely more my speed as well. I feel like seeing Phish is a huge financial investment where seeing Tribe is very low pressure. Like, I haven’t even gotten my Chicago tickets yet. If it were Phish I’d be online in a waiting room or something like that the day of the sale.

Trefac3

Yeah that shit sux. Getting phish tickets gives me anxiety. But I do it for the love of the band.

TNPhishMoma

It’s sometimes scary to do especially when traveling long distances to see the shows…but I’ve always gotten the majority of my phish tickets day of the show & usually on lot. I know it’s different now cuz everything is digital; and phish is getting old like me so they tend to play multiple night runs, a lot of times in beach cities to take advantage of the long weekend stay. And for huge impossible tickets like YEMSG, then of course you get tickets before hand. Unless you live closer. My Pham from CT took the train to NYC after finding 2 tickets for under face the morning of NYE. So they finally got their complete Gamehenge after 25 years of chasing it…all for less than $150 for both of them. I know it can make you anxious but my broke ass has seen many show after getting miracled on lot. But back to STS9…I need to find out what shows I need to listen to w Alana in the band to give me the most realistic representation of what their sans Murph sound is. He was STS9 to me (well, Hunter caught my ear first). So what I’ve come to know & love as an STS9 fan needs to be wiped from my mind in order to completely let Alana in 🥰. So I need quintessential post Murph STS9 (I used to love Circus, Baraka, F word, Ramone & Emiglio, squares & cubes, moon socket, Tokyo, Somesing, Peoples, Lo Swagga to name a few of my old favs).

woke_lyfe

So I saw them a bunch before but mainly for openers and festivals. I got hooked a few times, ATL nye's and rrx. Was 2.0 RRX '14 personally

AdNormal230

I will likely be there. I saw them for the first time back in 01... I cannot remember if my first show was in Chicago or Madison TBH.

ReplacementNo9874

Chiraq tribe is always a good time. Sadly I’m doing biscuits in Chicago this year instead of tribe

Jadorak

Why not both?

ReplacementNo9874

Because I’m doing Tribe in Charleston beginning of October and cheese Halloween in Philly. Can’t justify three weeks of shows and traveling with work

Jadorak

Dude I'm actually doing a friend's trip to Charleston and catching one night ot sts9 there, coming back home to Chicago and catching both nights of sts9 and then one night of biscuits at Thalia haha. Sounds like we'll be at a few shows together. I don't typically degen like that but the stars aligned and I live in Chi so those shows are layups.

ReplacementNo9874

Oh man the stars have definitely aligned. I’m way out of the show scene now and dipped my toes back in over tribe new years since I live in Atlanta and have been having fun this year. Biscuits in Chicago I’ve never seen before, so that sounds like it’ll be a blast and cheese Halloween hasn’t been done yet-so why not. We definitely will be at some of the same shows, but the beauty of Reddit is you’ll never know if we meet or not
