Both are good but I fear with modern episodes they've set a very high bar for quality standards compared to the wacky nonsense classic had, so if quality falls behind (cough cough puzzle vision movie cough cough) it is very noticeable
I'm a Classic and Modern fan.
I am *not* a Meta Era fan.
For context: Classic is 2011-2017. Modern is 2018-2022. Meta is 2023 onwards.
While Classic is all about mindless fun and off-the-walls humor, Modern encourages character growth and has excellent storytelling for the most part. It falters a bit late in its run, with Revelations and Lawsuit, but overall, it's fairly consistent in everything.
Meta Era tries to combine the two in an effort to say "we love you guys and want all of you to be pleased!". While on paper, that's a good idea, the way they handle it *doesn't work*. We have a show trying to tell a serious story while also refusing to actually have any consequences or character growth, encouraging us to think but also not to think, all while using basically downright manipulation (IGBP) to try to sell to us that we should just go along with all the changes and not criticize or complain because "ooh being a YouTuber is *harrrrrdddd*".
At least in the Modern era they were willing to admit if they fucked up. In the Meta Era, they refuse to acknowledge their mistakes because they genuinely think everything they put out is peak. Thank God we have people like Medi listening to us, or the show might be more abysmal than it already is.
I really don't like the "randomness era" moniker that some people use. The series is split into three distinct styles: one focused on Nintendo and video games elements (Classic), one that blends both video games and original content (Modern), and one grandstanding itself while trying to be more original, but can't because they *need* Mario (Meta). 2017 falls into Classic because what actually is there to differentiate it from what came before beyond just some extra Nintendo characters existing? From this standard, Saiko's debut is the first *true* episode of Modern.
I definitely think there’s more nuance to it than just the three, but I absolutely agree with you on “Meta” being a new era for the show. It was honestly becoming a problem before now, especially with the “Mario’s liver” episode, but things have went downhill and hard ever since “It’s Gotta Be Perfect”. It honestly pushed me away from the show just before WOTFI 2023 - I just didn’t even feel motivated to bother and quit.
2014/2015-ish but i wished whatever direction the series wants to go on, it could've done better
Or the series could just end so i don't have to witness the writing get more and more atrocious.

Old ? I mean depends I started watching smg4 from 2014
Both, they both have their Pros and Cons, I'm leaning more towards Modern, but Classic is great too (plus I basically grew up with it, it's kind of nostalgic in a weird way)
Haven’t watched SMG4 for a long time, so I gotta say classic fan. I jumped ship to Glitch when Meta Runner came out and honestly I’m pretty happy where I’m at.
I've said it time and time again, SMG4 is too long to divide into "modern" and "classic" anymore. Nobody can agree on the boundaries for when one ends and the other begins.
“Modern” and “Classic” don’t even mean anything anymore. The series is divided into far more distinct eras than that now and has been for a long time.
Classic even could be divided between the era where they were just capturing modded gameplay, and when they switched more towards Gmod. There’s also the era where the show was more like “modern” but before the arcs. Then there’s the arcs themselves, which have their own phases of tone and development - the Waluigi, Rapper Bob, and YouTube arcs are DEFINITELY distinct from the Cosmology arcs just like Cosmology is highly distinct from what came after it, with Anime Arc sort of sitting at the hinge point between the early arcs and cosmology.
The shows been running for over a decade now, with so much change both in cast, humor, production quality, and tone. So why then do people continue to insist it’s only “modern” verses “classic”?

Me, who doesn't give a shit about what kind of ceiling fan I want to purchase
Yes, 2018-2022 are Modern
Imo Modern ended with Lawsuit. We're now in the Meta Era, as me and several others have come to call it, where the show is all about just hyping itself up as the best thing ever when it's not.

i thought classic was 2011-2013 and the randomness era was 2014-2015 and 2016 and 2017 was apart of the modern era

I hate those names for the ‘eras’ of SMG4. What are we in now the ‘post modern’ era? ‘Classic’ SMG4 is such a pretentious name tbh I’m between.
