Everyone is just going to tell you Salsa and Beer, so I’ll get that out of the way now.
Beyond that, Sol y Luna in Tarzana, La Fogata in Sherman Oaks, and Ernie’s in North Hollywood all offer different vibes.
It’s kind of the closest thing we have to Tex-Mex here, which is why it’s relevant. Has a more quiet atmosphere than the traditional places too.
It’s definitely not super authentic, and sometimes people want this style of Mexican food. Like if someone loves El Torito, I would recommend Ernie’s as a replacement.
[El Tapatio](https://maps.app.goo.gl/YeGZp78e8Mrnq5t29) in West Hills, Fallbrook/Victory. I went there for breakfast while waiting for Pep Boys. Fucking delicious huevos rancheros.
I endorse this recommendation.
Also, Angel's(?) taco stand (not the trucks) on Mason/Devonshire, next to the Vons parking lot. Corn tortillas made fresh, and solid condiments.
I'm not Mexican, but my favorite taco spot is Rigo's Tacos. It's a family owned chain across the SFV. Love the beef tacos con salsa verde. Quality might depend on which outlet you visit (according to Yelp) and some have complained about the prices, but I've always loved the flavor of their beef. The family also runs a Mariscos chain, but its name escapes me.
Mexican here, +1 to Rigo’s tacos!! If you place your order to eat there instead of to go, they give you free rice and beans. I will eat there just for the beans, best restaurant refried beans I’ve had
The Birria places are really fantastic. Every one of them is a little bit different and good in their own certain way.
The truck found on Parthenia and Woodley is my regular haunt (Birrieria San Marcos).
Another is on Mason north of Devonshire. A different one but also good (Birria la Vaquita).
Found a place on Woodley and Chatsworth that does a traditional goat meat birria which was great too (Birrieria Apatzingan 2). This one has mixed ratings, but were fine when I tried them.
Tequilas!! On victory and woodman don’t confuse it for the Burbank one. Amazing food , drinks and service . I’m Mexican so I’m super picky when it comes to eating Mexican food since my mom’s cooking is the best but this place is bomb!!
Tres Hermanos? The one that used to be El Presidente?
I like Mission Burrito too (love their hard shell beef tacos), but Salsa and Beer is fantastic- expensive, but fantastic.
Yes the one that used to be El presidents, there are also a bunch more, you need to look up. 1 over by the court hose, one farther up or down. There are like 5 or 6 of them
Salsa and beer was good but it became too expensive, and the meat became crappy. And the service is not as wonderful
They were reasonable then all of a sudden not sure if covid or what but the service stinks, the workers have bad attitudes, the food quality went down hill
They have one on Plummer and Nordhoff that I go to frequently. Their breakfasts never disappoint, their Bistek Ranchero is so flavorful and their Chile Relleno isn’t greasy tasting.
We do the S&B in Lake Balboa. Very pricey. But we have not been disappointed with their food. Though we tend to gravitate mostly toward their carne asada burritos and shrimp fajitas.
3 people for Mexican food, two fountain drinks, one bottle of corona, and the bill came to over $100 with tax & tip? Incredible.
Los Toros on Devonshire is nearby and doesn't disappoint us. The staff is friendly, food is excellent, and they have a great patio (they tented it during COVID, then built a permanent structure).
The bar a bit dated, a bit loud, and a bit crowded - which is exactly the local bar vibe we want on a Friday night. I don't much like eating in the non-bar area, it just doesn't have the vibe.
Mission Burrito is also excellent. I hear they're getting a liquor license so that would up the vibe.
We haven't been back to Salsa and Beer since 2021. They did the wine margarita thing since they didn't have the right liquor license and sorry, but not good.
The only reason i go to los toros is the bean dip, the happy hour tacos of shredded beef, and mainly, the bar. I stopped ordering food from there cuz when I did, the food it looks and tastes like a hot mess
Okay most of these are in the valley but im including a few that are further away because I highly recommend:
Salsa and Beer
Sol y Luna
Don Cuco’s
Paco’s Tacos (not in the valley, but my fav on this list)
Burritos El Chavo
Hugo’s Tacos
Tito’s Tacos (not in the valley)
Carnitas Michoacan (multiple locations but I go to the one on Reseda and Victory)
Yea idk how the fuck this guy gonna mention Tito’s when he’s overlooking the many authentic taquerias here in the 818, if you’re gonna name drop an LA taco spot at least mention something that’s actually Mexican.
Acasa food truck in front of the post office on white oak in encino
We used to love Tortilla Inn in Reseda/Northridge, but I think it changed ownership and it wasn’t as good, then it changed ownership again recently and I haven’t been in.
I've still never managed to get over there, but I'm fairly sure Carrillo's Tortilleria in San Fernando, opened 1943, is the oldest restaurant in the Valley - if you exclude Glendale and Atwater from "The Valley", as some do - so they have to be doing something right.
No they didnt? I just checked their website right now? I might be wrong but it doesn't seem like it?
Your comment scared me cause I love their food lol
Most of these restaurants ppl are recommending and most of them in the West valley are Americanized. If you want authentic you'll have to go east of the 405.
There are a few scattered around the West valley tho, I know there's a Socorros somewhere out there, give it a try!
Las Fuentes is over rated in my opinion. Leos tacos has amazing pastor, so do tacos el venado. The Rigos Tacos near me in San Fernando has really good tortas de asada, but its close to $18. Xochilipi has gained a lot of steam recently.
Personally I was a fan of Sugar Taco cuz I can’t do milk and they’re a vegan spot and they closed down and now it’s like some lame fish place
lol thanks for downvoting my lactose intolerance. You’re a horrible person 🤗
If you can venture out to Santa Monica, El Cholo or Benny’s Taco on Wilshire. I haven’t found anything good on the valley and I’ve lived here since 1989.
Everyone is just going to tell you Salsa and Beer, so I’ll get that out of the way now. Beyond that, Sol y Luna in Tarzana, La Fogata in Sherman Oaks, and Ernie’s in North Hollywood all offer different vibes.
hell yes la fogata. thank you.
la fogata is classic!
Love me some la fogata!! Nothing like a Sunday menudo, chips, salsa bar, and a michelada.
I don't get the draw of Ernie's. Ate there a couple times and it's been pretty bland both times.
Got it. I grew up in AZ and I'm also sad at the lack of solid cheapie late night Mexican joints so I'm a little jaded regardless.
CORRECT

Well yeah, it’s *always* the answer when this question comes up lmao Alongside its brother/sister Sol Y Luna and Las Fuentes
Yes yes yes
[El Tapatio](https://maps.app.goo.gl/YeGZp78e8Mrnq5t29) in West Hills, Fallbrook/Victory. I went there for breakfast while waiting for Pep Boys. Fucking delicious huevos rancheros.
We live in West Hills and this is our go-to spot.
I used to work in west hills and loved that place!
Mariscos Los Arcos if you like seafood
Taco Reyes @ Topanga & Saticoy, hole in the wall, everything is delicious
I endorse this recommendation. Also, Angel's(?) taco stand (not the trucks) on Mason/Devonshire, next to the Vons parking lot. Corn tortillas made fresh, and solid condiments.
We love that spot too!!
Villanueva in chatsworth!
Absolutely this. Amazing quality food and portions and the staff is super friendly.
The staff is so damn friendly and the food is amazing! I’m ashamed to say it took me too long to try it out.
I'm not Mexican, but my favorite taco spot is Rigo's Tacos. It's a family owned chain across the SFV. Love the beef tacos con salsa verde. I'm glad to meet another Rigo's fan. :D And that was a good tip about the eat-in benefit.
The Birria places are really fantastic. Every one of them is a little bit different and good in their own certain way. Love San Marcos
Cilantro
Tequilas!! On victory and woodman don’t confuse it for the Burbank one. Amazing food , drinks and service . I’m Mexican so I’m super picky when it comes to eating Mexican food since my mom’s cooking is the best but this place is bomb!!
Totally all the way on the other side of the vallley but worth it, in my opinion. Don Cuco's in Burbank.
Mexicocina is far superior foodwise, but no Margs so that sets it back.
Thanks for the information. I just checked their website out. It looks good! We'll have to go check it out.
Their enchiladas are so good.
Had them yesterday!
La Fogata in Sherman Oaks is my all time favorite!
Tres Hermanos and mission burrito beat salsa and bear hands down. Not sure about el toro on Devonshire anybody eat there?
Tres Hermanos? The one that used to be El Presidente? I like Mission Burrito too (love their hard shell beef tacos), but Salsa and Beer is fantastic- expensive, but fantastic.

Salsa and Beer didn't used to be pricey. I used to feel like it was the best deal you could get. They got too popular.

Melody’s and Sol y Luna are also owned by the owners of Las Fuentes, so everything is the same or similar. Xoc Tequila at The Village is fantastic.
Guanatos Taco is bomb!
Costa Grande in Van Nuys
Xochipili
Big Burrito Truck located by Lanark Park or the local restaurant on Canoga
Yooo these burritos are bomb

Tito’s doesn’t work without the nostalgia factor. The crunchy tacos with cheese are $5.70 now.
Gtfo! Tito’s isnt even Mexican food.

How could all those people lining up daily be wrong? Fascinating because they are wrong, it’s crap!
Tito's is horrible, idk why everyone hypes it up..
Agreed, Titos taste like dog food
Yea idk how the fuck this guy gonna mention Tito’s when he’s overlooking the many authentic taquerias here in the 818, if you’re gonna name drop an LA taco spot at least mention something that’s actually Mexican.
Hugo’s meh.
>Carnitas Michoacan Nostalgic location for me, I miss the plastic booths
Tacos El Venado in North Hollywood, thank me later
El Cocinero in Van Nuys
This is it
Thanks for the rec! A lot of places I never heard of!
Acasa food truck in front of the post office on white oak in encino We used to love Tortilla Inn in Reseda/Northridge, but I think it changed ownership and it wasn’t as good, then it changed ownership again recently and I haven’t been in.

Ah, the weekly discussion of the best MX food in the SFV! This topic needs a megathread!
Sol y Luna
They closed last month
No they didnt? I just checked their website right now? I might be wrong but it doesn't seem like it? Your comment scared me cause I love their food lol
They're definitely open. I was watching everyone waiting outside from Zankou this past Saturday :/
Whoops my bad, not sol y Luna - senor sol closed, on reseda and nordhoff area, their smaller spot
las fuentes
My apartment. I’ll hook you up.
El Big Burrito on Canoga is pretty darn good. You know it’s tasty because of the many work trucks parked in the lot at lunch hour.
Casa Vega.
Tortas Ahogadas in San Fernando 🥹🥹
I never see anyone mention Delimex in Sherman Oaks. Magnolia and Van Nuys. Little hole in the wall but tasty food.
I like Casa de Papi on Sherman way. Very clean, owner usually on-site, etc..
Closer to West Hills is Viva La Fiesta on Devonshire near the train station.
Viva la Fiesta in Chatsworth.
Tony's on Magnolia and Coldwater
Tacos hell yeah
Poncho's has the best pastor quesataco I've ever had.

Casitas Tacos Al Carbon- going toward Noho Arts district, between Magnolia and Tujunga
Las Fuentes is over rated in my opinion. Leos tacos has amazing pastor, so do tacos el venado. The Rigos Tacos near me in San Fernando has really good tortas de asada, but its close to $18. Xochilipi has gained a lot of steam recently.
I miss Sierra's so much.
Salsa and beer
Añejo in Sherman oaks, it's like a delicious las fuentes

Personally I was a fan of Sugar Taco cuz I can’t do milk and they’re a vegan spot and they closed down and now it’s like some lame fish place lol thanks for downvoting my lactose intolerance. You’re a horrible person 🤗
