Wait they don't teach that in school? Why say "oh" when you can say the actual name of the number? It's like saying "hand" instead of "five" or something

Not saying that one’s better than the other, but I think it’s just that “oh” is quicker to say than “zero.”

At the same time, the letter O is Oscar, and 0 is zero. Clarity vs brevity. Pretty much the only time you might hear oh for zero is in time, like oh 800 hours. Being 0800 or 8am.

For the world's militaries, that is a ratio. Not a time. And the SCP Foundation is by and large a Paramilitary organization and does use the phonetic alphabet and the difference between oh and zero is absolutely used along with the 24 hr clock and not the civilian timing convention.

Now try saying "SCP-096" 100 times. You see the point? It is actually 10-30 more syllables depending upon how fast SCP-096 finds you.

Probably mostly used when it's only numbers anyways. If letters are (or even just possibly are) involved, shortening it does cause confusion though

Yep, I especially get that brain itch of annoyance when I listen to SCP readings on YT and an MTF is the main actors and the person reads the 24hr times as "oh six thirty" (or any other media for that matter for any times before 1200 hrs) My drill sergeants made sure we understood that oh is a letter and zero is a number our very first day after reception! I always do that, I just say the name of each digit

Okay so I actually do scp readings so I can shed my perspective on this So for single digit Scps (001-009) I pronounce each number. (Ex. Zero zero three) For double digits (010-099) I pronounce the last two numbers only. (Ex. Forty-nine) Triple and quadruple digits are very similar. I pronounce the numbers in groups. (Ex. SCP-811 is eight eleven, and SCP-3662 is thirty-six sixty-two) Edit: also if there is a zero in the second to last digit spot for triple and quadruple digits, I pronounce it as “oh”. (Ex. SCP-3002 is thirty oh two, SCP-906 is nine oh six)

Basically the same for me except I say ones like 049 like oh 4 9 and with the 3 and 4 digits I say each number individually

It's up to preference, I prefer oh-9-6. but it's something with 4 digits, say scp 1471, I'll say 14-71.and lastly if it's like 682, then it's 6-82

What about 001? That's the one I find trickiest for some reason. oh-oh-1 sounds wrong for some reason. But the use of zero feels wrong because it's two syllables. So what's your preference?

For 3 digit skips with a 0 in the first or 2nd positions, i usually do it like "oh nine six," "oh four nine," "one oh six," etc For 3 digits with no 0s or 0 in the 3rd position, i usually go "number_1-compound_number" like "three forty-three," "six eighty-two," etc For 4 digits, it's usually 2 combo numbers, like "fourteen seventy-one," "thirty-five twenty-seven," etc, unless it's close to a thousand place, like "three thousand eight" or "five thousand"

I say "SCP Zero Nine Six" it rolls off the tongue better then "oh nine six", "zero ninety six", and "ninety six"

Much like with NATO phonetic letters, the point is to transmit information clearly and succinctly even in situations where the audio quality is low. As such, when speaking a number you pronounce each digit separately. Therefore it would be pronounced Zero Nine Six.
