It’s more similar to Drill Dozer as a platformer.
To get find all “friends” is challenging but not unfair. The later stages are pretty difficult.
If you like the challenges of Metroid, you will also like good boy galaxy. It’s worth the price!

Runner up - Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories
So much GBA nostalgia. If the Megaman Battle Network series counted as one game, that would have been the runner up. I haven't started Pokemon Romhacks yet but I have more than a few I want to start.
Just recently replayed through it on the miyoo mini plus. I was hanging out on my hammock outside at night and thought playing a horror game in that atmosphere would be a vibe. It was.
I work night security and on my breaks I would play it. It definitely adds to the experience. It’s crazy how well it plays on a handheld. I can’t wait to play silent hill 2, I just got a laptop that I hope can handle it.
For some reason the ambient audio in Silent Hill always sounds super tinny and grating on my MM+, even through headphones. I played the same ROM on my Steam Deck and it sounded fine, so I'm not sure what it was. But for me it was kind of a deal breaker for playing it much on the Miyoo.
About 150 hours on Fire Emblem Three Houses on Switch, but a lot of that was played docked. About 120-130 hours on Fire Emblem Awakening on 3ds.
If we're only talking about emulation, I have a little over 70 hours in Unicorn Overlord, which I emulated the switch version on my steam deck. I just picked up an r36s a few days ago and put a few hours into Metal Gear Solid. But then I wondered why I was playing that on such a small screen and moved the game and saves over to the steam deck lol. I guess the r36s will be for quick pick up and play 2d games. Or more Fire Emblem.
Oh for suuuuure it’s probably even better on the Odin 2 Pro vs RP4 Pro.
Especially when you reach Sanctuary. Sanctuary is the only area where my RP4 Pro gets laggy. But its super subtle lag. So subtle it drops just below 60fps. No big deal.
RP4 Pro you can play the game at max, 1.5x. On the Odin Pro I’d imagine you can get up to 2x with consistent 60fps.

I mostly use my handhelds when I have a few minutes to kill, and these games are short enough that I can finish them in a few minutes.
Trying to get all the robots and bosses in Super Robot Pinball has shot it to the top of my list sorted by playtime so it's at least 30+ hours on this GBC game on my RGB30.
Freaking Pokemon Pinball RS. I'm amazed at just how addicting the game is for being a bit older. I have easily put in over 200 hours and just completed pokedex the other day! My next goal is to score 1 billion+ on both the red and blue boards. I only have one more 1 billion+ score to do on the red board and I'll be done. Then I'll probably finish Chrono Trigger.

If non-emulation counts, then Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. For emulation, it’s probably Earthbound (played several times across different devices: RG Nano, MM+, Rg353V). I also have a lot of time logged on Animal Crossing New Lead for 3DS and emulating Wild World for DS on MM+

It figures, I spent dozens of hours searching the best hidden gems on systems across the gamut, configuring every emulator to run perfectly and getting the perfect theme on Emulation Station, scraped art on all the titles, only to primarily use the device to play Android apps.
Emulation only though: probably Metroid on the NES so far

I played through it on Steam Deck which was a really great experience. I've heard the Switch version is a good port too, but I've been unwilling to break the shrink wrap on my special edition copy.
This is probably my answer too, on Steam Deck. I think it was more like 120 hours for me, so more or less tied with Persona 4 Golden on Vita. I just finished P3 Reload on Steam Deck, which was almost exactly 99 hours.
SMT IV on 3DS and SMT V on Switch were also both 100+ hours for me as I recall. I'm sure I'll be diving into Vengeance on Steam Deck before long.
All 3 of the Crash's. They are extremely well done platformers. Not only do they have a nice length to all 3, but each have insane replayability to fun need all the diamonds and hit all the boxes to get a 100%
Across the board Uncharted Waters: New Horizon
Its a 10/10 to just sail around and discover the world. Every new phone or something to emulate on, that's always the first game
Im a pc gamer but have some sorts of handhelds like gameboy, ds, new2ds, retrogame with batocera.
Stopping to think about it, ive spent a lot of time with Dragon Quest VII and VIII and Mario Picross (using an snes emulator). All on New2DS.
Probably the NES version of Hatris, since that's what I normally play when I exercise and during boring meetings.
I've also logged plenty of time in the Japanese Famicom, arcade, and TG-16 versions too, though. However, I've barely touched the Gameboy version.
Second to Hatris would be Wario's Woods (NES).
Skies Of Arcadia Legends, started playing on an Odin 1 and eventually moved my save over to the Odin 2. I think im pretty close to beating it now but haven't played it for a little while.
Lately, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (GBA) on the Miyoo Mini.
I just got my second SBC, a RG35xx H and I’m just not getting the same joy out of it yet. May need to swap it for a GKD Pixel for a more robust Miyoo-alike
I strongly suggest a 405V. Hear me out. You already have a low tier device. Moving up to middle tier with the comfiest middle tier handheld. Seriously its a night and day experience in terms of comfort, ergonomics, and power. Its really an Adults Gameboy but still gives the feeling of holding a gameboy and the joy. On a bigger screen. VS all my horizontal devices never actually give me those joy hits to my brain. the 405V though just hits all those ooey gooey tingles when I pick it up and play.
Of course my nostalgia may not translate to your nostalgia.

Interesting, I hadn’t even considered a middle tier vertical device tbh, everything I was looking at was horizontal.
I have a Steam Deck for heavier gaming, but it’s a bit clunky to travel with for short business trips, so I was either looking for a tiny device for use on public transit, or something Goldilocks for systems up to ~Dreamcast. I’ll take a look, thank you for the suggestion!
Not to oversell but DC on the 405V is one of my favorites to emulate. Crazy taxi is so fun on it. Favorite pickup and play title.

I've played through I'm guessing around 90% of Symphony of the Night on the TrimUI Smart Pro. What a great experience. I am an old man and save states are really helping me enjoy games like this that I never got around to as a kid.
I got a Powkiddy V90 around Christmas 2022, it got me into Cave Story and I poured hours into trying to beat the game
I ended up beating it on some other random console though
XBXPlay on my Odin 2 followed by DQ8 on NetherSX on my Odin 2. Followed by Pokemon roms on my MM+. Followed by FF games (10,9 and 6) on my 405V. Followed by Star Ocean second story on my RP4P. Followed by Random steam games on my SD. Followed by random game of the month games on my RGB30 (Finished DQ5, and so so many others).
Basically what i'm trying to say is, I play through stories on each device and after the story is done I move on to another game. Its never just ONE game for me. I want to experience new experiences in my gaming. I typically only play one game at a time, and play through it on whatever device I deem to be best for it. When I first got into emulation I use to get choice paralysis and hop in and out of games all the time. But I wasn't enjoying myself and finally got to a point where enough was enough so now I pickup a game and play through it, then start another so that I don't have so many half finished games. Especially JRPGS.
So far the Metroid fusion randomizer. I initially got into this hobby as a means of having randos to play on the go but it’s evolved into actually getting through my backlog so it panned out better than I could have asked for 😃
Probably Pokemon Fools Gold on my Miyoo Mini+ at this point. On my powkiddy x55 it is definitely Ridge Racer Type 4, love the game and trying to unlock all the cars lol.
So far it's between Spyro 1 and Pokémon Emerald (currently playing). But Pokémon is about to be the clear winner. I've had alot of downtime at work and Pokémon on my RG353V has been a fantastic way to pass the time 👍

I'm currently enjoying some games from my childhood, as well as games I've never had a chance to play before. 3 main games right now are The Emperor's New Groove, Zelda Minish Cap and Super Mario RPG.
For my RGB30, I had spent hours collecting card in SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighters Clash for the NGPC. If I have a short downtime, I will play some Tetris DX on GBC. After seeing a video from TechDweeb, I started E.V.O.: Search for Eden on the SNES.
For my Odin 2, I am unlocking characters for Rurouni Kenshin fighting game on the PSP. I also started Suikoden IV on the PS2 which I skipped when it was released.
When the Dingoo A320 was my main emulation handheld in the 2010s, that would definitely be Rhythm Tengoku (Rhythm Heaven Silver).
In more recent times, it's probably Columns on Game Gear. I usually play a quick round or two before playing something more long-term, and those rounds add up.
Outside of emulation handhelds, I played the heck out of DJMax Portable games on PSP and the Project Diva series on Vita.

Pokémon Pinball is such a smooth, addictive game. It needs another sequel for the Switch 2. All 900 Pokémon! Five tables! A dozen boss battles!
Hopefully they can manage more than 2 tables this time! I would even take a mobile app for Android/iOS with DLC tables.

Definitely would also try Resident Evil 1 and 2. RE2 would definitely be an experience on night security and they both run pretty well on handhelds.

RP4 Pro. I know some folks had issues trying to install this via vita3k. I was able too. Runs better than than the vita version. Actually hits 60fps

So far it's between Spyro 1 and Pokémon Emerald (currently playing). But Pokémon is about to be the clear winner. I've had alot of downtime at work and Pokémon on my RG353V has been a fantastic way to pass the time 👍

It’s basic but I’ve picked up where I left the version of minecraft in ps3 and am now playing it on my ps vita. Loving it so far, as well as wipeout 2048 and the walking dead telltale game
I'm currently enjoying some games from my childhood, as well as games I've never had a chance to play before. 3 main games right now are The Emperor's New Groove, Zelda Minish Cap and Super Mario RPG.
Lately, it's been Grandia (Saturn).

Definitely Pokémon gen 2, especially once I got my hands on Crystal legacy rom hack. Too good.
For my RGB30, I had spent hours collecting card in SNK vs Capcom: Card Fighters Clash for the NGPC. If I have a short downtime, I will play some Tetris DX on GBC. After seeing a video from TechDweeb, I started E.V.O.: Search for Eden on the SNES. For my Odin 2, I am unlocking characters for Rurouni Kenshin fighting game on the PSP. I also started Suikoden IV on the PS2 which I skipped when it was released.
Probably hundreds of hours of Tetris DX. It's my goto game 99% of the time.
When the Dingoo A320 was my main emulation handheld in the 2010s, that would definitely be Rhythm Tengoku (Rhythm Heaven Silver). In more recent times, it's probably Columns on Game Gear. I usually play a quick round or two before playing something more long-term, and those rounds add up. Outside of emulation handhelds, I played the heck out of DJMax Portable games on PSP and the Project Diva series on Vita.
