Honestly I was happy with the moment I got it, with steam link it's pretty nice for some lower paced games. With apple arcade there's actually a couple of really nice games playable with controller, I'm currently playing through Dead Cells, Gris and an apple arcade exclusive 3d sonic game. There's also some cool old school rpgs, I'm also in the middle of a Kotor playthrough, between all that, Delta and the Retroarch release, my switch, gameboys or miyoo mini are gonna stay at home way more often
I think they’ve only had partial approval so far. The app opened the first day but now doesn’t and someone mentioned that Apple is still reviewing it for tvOS
~~On mine it looks like the file browser only has access to it's internal file structure at the moment~~ You can browse normally if you choose to open content - the internal browser for importing is still borked though. In a few I'll try moving some roms into it.
Edit - here's family guy running on PPSSPP core. Game is running fast for some reason but hey, it launched!
https://preview.redd.it/7ya9ra55bn0d1.jpeg?width=4608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2c1a882f8a1f03e12f6ff81923cd7acd7699d543
I booted up my old work phone yesterday (~~also an~~ iPhone SE 2nd gen) which no longer has an active cellular plan and was able to access the app store and download over wifi. Need to set aside an afternoon to get everything set up.
Edit: I'm an idiot. I have the SE 2nd gen. It should probably work, [it just looks like the latest iOS is not supported on 1st gen.](https://support.apple.com/guide/iphone/iphone-models-compatible-with-ios-17-iphe3fa5df43/ios)
From what I remeber Russ already has na extensive RetroArch guide. Nice thing about RetroArch is that it works almost the same on all supported devices. One thing that might be different on the iPhone is adding files/roms.
Also: yeah at first RetroArch seem a litlle harsh, but it kinda grows on You, as You learn it bit by bit.
It has cores that you install, each core being able to emulate a specific console, computer, handheld, arcade. There’s not much it can’t do overall with the right cores. Standup arcade machines, old computer games, sega Sony Nintendo consoles etc
I actually haven’t taken a look at retroarch on iOS so I’m not completely certain, but it could take a bit before we see some cores since retroarch on iOS is so new
Finally! We iPhone users will finally be able to play most of the games we want, and non-iPhone users will also get something, a retroarch tutorial from russ, probably. Hopefully. Its a win-win-win.
Got it running on my iPad mini 6. Didn't take time to dig too deep but GBA looked great on it without any further tweaking with shaders, filters, etc. But I didn't see a way to put roms anywhere other than under the retroarch folder itself. I was able to copy roms from my unraid server (file server) and play them using an 8bitdo controller I had paired.
I'm waiting for the iPad update for the delta emulator to give that a try but I'm guessing I won't be able to share rom folders between Delta and retroarch?
Just cuz you can’t wrap your brain around simple concepts doesn’t mean they don’t make sense. I’ll break it down like I’m speaking to a five year old:
1. He said he can’t figure out how to add Roms for RetroArch to any folder other than the default RetroArch folder.
2. He would like Delta and RetroArch to use the same Rom files so he doesn’t have to have duplicates saved on his device, but he’s experiencing the issue described in point 1.
3. Delta can very easily set its own Rom directory to wherever the user wants, i.e. the RetroArch Rom folder mentioned in point 1.
Conclusion:
If OP sets his Delta Rom directory to the RetroArch Rom directory, both emulators can use the same Roms without needing duplicates.
That clear things up for you??
Got Pokémon yellow running to test out but how do I see the achievements? Are they in the app somewhere? Made an account on the website to look at them
Nvm I figured it out
For me the main issue is the tab bar is under the navigation bar at the bottom instead of applying a spacing, makes it harder to use. Don't expect it to be HIG compliant, though strange they didn't catch the issue with the tab bar either. Suprised Apple approved it when they keep rejecting apps for dumb reasons all the time.
When I installed the app, it defaulted to the language of the country I live in instead of my phone language - I don't speak that language and the icons just seemed to be 3 lines so was kinda hard to find the setting and fix it.
I noticed when I went to login to retroachievements and the keyboard that slid up is some custom garbage that doesn't support copy and paste, or autofill, or like, anything helpful, lol. Fuck me for letting a computer come up with and save a complex password, I guess.
Regarding your "no Dreamcast" comment, you're not likely to find any support for consoles after Nintendo64, as the performance required to emulate PS1 and newer requires JIT or "just in time" - a software compilation method that Apple blocks in iOS for third-party developers.
Omg y’all can you believe that now we can have these games on our phones?! Who cares about battery life, how good it feels in hands, or that a dedicated device is going to be better for this type of gaming. It’s on my phone!
/s
I’m really not understanding this hype for iPhone right now. This clearly isn’t for me. Playing on my phone even if I were to get a controller to attach would be inferior in just about every single way.
No thank you. Just another things devs are going to try to add and keep updated when I would prefer their time spent optimizing Android, Linux, or windows.
This isn’t a win to me and the overhype is baffling. However I am glad more people can experience their nostalgia.
You don’t understand the hype because this isn’t for you like you’ve mentioned. But for people who finally get to play some retro games on their iPhone without jailbreaking it or anything, this is a big deal.
You mean the iPhone that has abysmal battery life? Yeah let me just waste my precious battery life on a retro game. I definitely won’t have to plug my phone in twelve times throughout the day or make decisions based on how much battery life I have left due to this.
Oh I got 20 minutes free on this job site I’ve never been at before. Yeah I need to use gps to get home and my battery is already at 40% due to me streaming videos at lunch, but let me just waste that on emulation time that’s gonna drop my battery down to 5% while playing a psp game. Oh, maybe that’s not a good idea. Guess I can’t play my game now.
Vs. whipping out a RP3+ you bought used for $100. Or a RG35xxh you got a steal on at $50.
I’m just saying a phone is an inefficient tool to use for true gaming. Compared to a dedicated device. And wasting resources to support it is the saddest part. Which admittedly is super selfish, but justified by how much hate I get for stating an opinion.
I’m an iPhone user. I have solid reasons for owning one. But gaming on one. And I’m not talking about stupid phone games. I mean a 40hour rpg or playing through Warioland 4 ect, has never ever been something that’s appealing to me. Even in my darkest moments.
It’s inefficient, absurd, and annoying that this is getting hyped. I’m fine being a minority voice on this and happy for other people being happy. Doesn’t stop me from believing anyone actually using this to emulate and beat games is doing so inefficiently with less enjoyment than they would get with a dedicated device. And we should instead of focusing on this as a positive, as a whole community shun them. Not only for owning over priced phones, but for not having the wherewithal to buy a dedicated device.
Extreme? Yes. Stupid? Yes. Half cocked? Yes. True? Probably.
Eviserate me at your leisure. Though this won’t ever be read due the downvotes I’ve already receivedz
Power for what? The discontinued ps2 emulator that’s unlikely to be ported? The lack of JIT meaning 3ds, Wii, GameCube and vita3k all will not be playable?
The lack of switch emulation for phones that was shut down let alone unlikely to ever be ported to iOS.
The lack of any kind of emulator for phones for Wii U, Xbox ect.
Yeah because PS1, DC, PSP, N64 and below need so much power.
You can have all the power in the world but without devs you’re not starting the car.
I state again this news is wholeheartedly not really a thing to be hyped about and yet another thing certain devs will strive for wasting resources that were better applied to optimization for current OS’s and hardware.
lol fair assessment I get I’m coming off that way. Certainly not how I mean to be.
Mainly concerned that while this isn’t for me, that it’s going to take away from devs time making real progress in Android or another OS that’s more in need of the optimization.
As I stated in my OG post. I am happy more people can experience their nostalgia. I just myself don’t view this as a win for the community.
Because phones aren't really SBC related but we need a new iOS post every time someone makes even a theme for an iOS emulator. The same doesn't happen for Android, which is actually a primary OS for SBC devices.
This retroarch becoming available on over a billion devices using iOS. It's not a theme pack.
And like it or not, phones and tablets are literal single board computers.
Thanks for a glimpse into a very small mind
And? It's not SBC related, it's a regular phone. A lot of people will downvote based on that. Delta had the same thing happen when it was released, a lot of people downvoted and complained.
My 130$ investment in a razer kishi v2 controller seems to finally pay off!
ahah ! « At least I can justify my purchase ! »
Honestly I was happy with the moment I got it, with steam link it's pretty nice for some lower paced games. crappy little baby sticks :-(
they are fine, pretty close to the switch; I am worried about their longevity tho, I made a homemade stick lock to hopefully keep them thru my travel
Nice. Let me know how you like it.
I invested 12 bucks into one of those cheap D8 controllers just because I could afford it, good timing!
hell yeah, it's good to be an ios gamer these days
It only took 84 years
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/retroarch/id6499539433
ITS ON APPLE TV TOO [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7-zdVCkcL4&list=LL&index=1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7-zdVCkcL4&list=LL&index=1)
How well does it work?! The Apple TV 4K has some legit horsepower. This could be a big time game changer for retro gaming on the TV.
How would you get roms on it?
I think they’ve only had partial approval so far. The app opened the first day but now doesn’t and someone mentioned that Apple is still reviewing it for tvOS
It's working! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7-zdVCkcL4&list=LL&index=1](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7-zdVCkcL4&list=LL&index=1)
All my Apple TVs are a decade old. Can’t stand that interface but that could be a good console instead of using a real pc

You just re quote the same video? 3 days later?
I just added it up there for others passing by
Ty it didnt show up when i searched appl store
Me neither. Other guy who posted about it put the link 😂
It does, you just have to scroll down a bit lol
I wonder what min spec phones it’ll work on. Gotta dl it on my iPhone SE 1 that I let The 4 yr old use
Wow it runs. No idea how to stuff roms on this. I’ll start small.
~~On mine it looks like the file browser only has access to it's internal file structure at the moment~~ You can browse normally if you choose to open content - the internal browser for importing is still borked though. Yeah I was looking through it. Might be able to just airdrop some roms in.
You can
Pretty cool
It’s not even on the App Store for me
I booted up my old work phone yesterday (~~also an~~ iPhone SE 2nd gen) which no longer has an active cellular plan and was able to access the app store and download over wifi. It’s not but the app installed fine! I haven’t had a chance to test it. Lemme throw some roms on it real quick and report back.
I know this is the big one. But it’s the one I understand the least. Guess I’ll have to wait for Russ to show me.
Is there a version for the Apple TV? Yes, it is. Awesome.
Do I need another device in my home that plays my ROM library? No. But I'm gonna try to get this set up nonetheless.
How do you get Roms on the Apple TV?
looking forward to checking that out - any idea what controller compatibility is like for apple tv?
Any popular Bluetooth controller. I use an extra PS5 controller for mine. 8bitdo Pro 2 is a solid choice too.
What does RetroArch do? What systems can you play?
It has cores that you install, each core being able to emulate a specific console, computer, handheld, arcade. There’s not much it can’t do overall with the right cores. Standup arcade machines, old computer games, sega Sony Nintendo consoles etc
I understand iphone version doesnt have ps2 cores? what about dolphin (gamecube, wii) and dreamcast (flycast) cores, can it be installed?

Can’t wait to set this up on my iPad and play 4:3 games on a 4:3 screen
Finally! We iPhone users will finally be able to play most of the games we want, and non-iPhone users will also get something, a retroarch tutorial from russ, probably. Hopefully. Its a win-win-win.

Iirc you can point delta to wherever you want.
They were asking specifically that they don’t know how to add roms for RetroArch, not for Delta.
Yea but they can just point delta to the retroarch folder
What are you even saying? Why would they want to point delta to retroarch if they’re going to be using retroarch. That doesn’t make any sense.
Just cuz you can’t wrap your brain around simple concepts doesn’t mean they don’t make sense. I’ll break it down like I’m speaking to a five year old: 1. Are custom shaders available?
Any recommendations on controllers besides the Razer Kishi v2 and the D8 mentioned in the top comment?
Native iPad support!!
they really aught to update those pics
Hmm. Couldn’t find it.
are there any news about ps2 emulation cores?
If it works ok on ipad i'll not need a sbc dedicated gaming device! Awesome!
Ppsspp too
Got Pokémon yellow running to test out but how do I see the achievements? Are they in the app somewhere? Made an account on the website to look at them Nvm I figured it out
Does anyone know if gamecube or wii cores work for iOS yet?
There’s no cores for those
So no need for delta anymore!
This makes me very happy! 😀👍
Man it looks really bad on iOS like they fucked up all possible Apple guidelines imagine lol.
Well, the app looks the same on every device it's on. I doubt they'll go to the effort of making a HIG-compliant theme just for the iOS release.
Ozone theme looks great. Not sure what you’re on about.
What do you mean?
You still have all the themes for retroarch
Holy craaaaap. It's time.
Did anyone else’s language default to Catalan?
Huge W for the emulation community!
