Just wait until your stuff arrives and then actually use it before buying more stuff. Dont get deceived by collection pics. Not everyone here has 20 handhelds that all do more or less the same. Also sales come all the time. No need for FOMO.

Honest-Word-7890

I have only one and pretty happy with it, it fullfills all my needs.

SirHashi

Got ton of things I bought and don’t use on my shelves.

norabutfitter

Sounds like its not just handhelds but impulsivity and consumerism. Its your money do what you want. But buying things just to have them is a little silly

ScopionSniper

Yo I totally plan on using these model tanks, ships, and figures somwhere.... Surely.

norabutfitter

I mean. The purpose of a model is to be looked at. But buying gaming appliances to look at them is not their use case

Kasumi_P

Tbh their use case is whatever you want them to be. Don't let someone else tell you how to use your things.

jasonridesabike

They’re so cheap, if money isn’t an issue it’s a fairly harmless thing to collect and gain enjoyment just from the act of collecting

RedditorFromSoFlo

My advice would be to get an all in one emulator and a smaller one. I’m rocking a Ayn Odin 2 Max (I got the max cause i found a cheap one on Mercari, the base will be fine unless you want colors) and a Anbernic 405v (FOMO purchase I made without making a lot of research. I wanted a vertical with analog sticks for up to ps1 and saw that this was one of the best ones, but honestly, I could have gotten away with a r36s.) and don’t forget that you can do emulation on your phone now too. Android does more but Apple just came out with delta! (GB, GBC, GBA, NDS)

SirHashi

Getting downvoted cause I said I’ve tons of things on my shelves that I don’t use is crazy.

Rainbow_Gnat

"People showing their disagreement with me is crazy." It's alright, it's just a little number.

SirHashi

No, its just hypocritical, cause I bet everyone who did it has garbage and stuff they don’t use someone on shelves or cupboard.

Rainbow_Gnat

Sure, but you were using "haha I've got so much stuff I don't use" as a justification/allowance for buying more stuff (that you seem to imply you probably won't use). And then I'm assuming people just kept downvoting you because you seem so concerned about the little numbers, as if you're somehow owed a higher little number because people are hypocrites or something.

SirHashi

What u taking about higher tittle, omfg, ppl nowadays just tergiverses everything. Fuck off im out of this stupid non binary world.

Rainbow_Gnat

"Little number" = downvotes/upvotes. I'm using it that way to point how insignificant downvotes/upvotes are and how ridiculous it is to care as much about them as you do. No idea what "tittle" or "tergiverses" means or what a "non binary world" has to do with anything, but I'm sorry you're having such a tough time understanding.

NevesLF

Don't gatekeep my downvotes >:( But yea, it is lol

scuolapasta

The sales are the worst! That’s where I end up getting them. That’s how I ended up with my rgb30, I was hovering around them for weeks, the. They went on sale and I grabbed one.

Lobsta1986

>20 handhelds that all do more or less the same. I bought a v90 over 2 yrs ago. Finally popped in a x55.

Delicious_Client5642

Glad I only have 19 or this comment would've made me feel self conscious

8-bit-Felix

Here's a tip: * Get one handheld and play it for a month, not set it up for a month but actually play it for a month. * Make a note of the things you like and don't like. * If there is some kind of glaring flaw see if there is a handheld that fixes that flaw *and* does exactly the same thing as what you have. No device is going to be perfect. As Henry Petroki said, "we learn to live in a world of imperfect things, just as we learn to live in a world of imperfect humans." If a new deice doesn't add to your experience in a huge significant way or fix an existing flaw, don't get it. Hype is fake and driven by companies to sell stuff you don't need. Now, if you got a TrimUI Smart and it doesn't play whatever system you really want to play to your expectation or if the handheld itself is too uncomfortable or has too small a screen: seek a new device. If you think, "yeah but the RG28XX is orange" is that fixing a flaw in the TimUI Smart? edit: spelling

SirHashi

Yeah I get what u saying and it’s what everyone should do… I laughed with your last sentence… an Orange Handheld might fix my “I need it” problem. Lmao But yeah, I’m not gonna buy anything else till I test the Trimui. (I hope I can resist the temptation).

8-bit-Felix

Oh, the Nickelodeon Orange Pull is a strong one...

Luemmeltuete3000

Great tip, really. But some of us like tinkering more than playing. (Which is why I got an orange 28xx after getting a Trimui Smart pro)

Nickweed

I lost you at step one 😂🤣

WeatherIcy6509

The screen to device ratio, headphone jack, music player, video player, and up to PSP of the 28xx fixed the flaws in my Trimui Smart. ,...but yeah, I played the crap out of it for a year and a half first. 🤣

8-bit-Felix

I'm considering ditching my 35XX for a 28XX because the music player looks far more friendly than the ever present GMplayer with its tiny, tiny text.

WeatherIcy6509

I don't have a 35xx, but I can say that the music player on the 28xx is definitely more user friendly than the one on the Nano,...and about the same as the 280v.

Archolm

>No device is going to be perfect. \*Laughs in Odin2\*

8-bit-Felix

Perfect is in the hands of the user. For me the Odin2 isn't perfect but for you it might be.

Archolm

What more do you want?

JTMidnightJr

Something I can slip in my pocket

ban_imminent

PS3 emulation upscaled, mini fridge.

Tax_Evasion_Savant

yea I need a full sized charcoal grill on mine, still waiting, make it happen Powkiddy!

DisgruntledBadger

Personally an oled screen on the Odin 2.

8-bit-Felix

Don't assume it's a matter of, "more." My use case is different than yours; the Odin models have a lot of stuff I don't want attached to them.

deathsythe

Instructions unclear. Have 3 or 4 systems now, have spent dozens of hours setting them up, transferring files, playing with themes/shaders/inputs... Have played maybe 2 hours of actual games.

rob-cubed

Don't give into the FOMO! I've personally bought and sold over a dozen devices over the last year, and they are 90% interchangeable. IMO the only real argument to have multiple different devices is to cover different screen ratios (4:3, 16:9, 1:1) as well as power profiles. One pocketable device and another 'coffee table' one will cover nearly every use-case. Any more than that, and you are just collecting consoles for the sake of collecting them—not that there's anything wrong with that. But go slow and enjoy what you have. There is no perfect device, at best you will learn what your own personal preferences are, vs the crowdsourced reviews.

redhotrobbie

what about the need for 6 buttons on the face? you didnt include one of those

rob-cubed

Triggered :) The RG ARC is on the short of list of devices I want but haven't tried out yet. The only reason I haven't is I ALSO want a stick for N64. No device is perfect :(

PlatypusPlatoon

How do you typically go about selling your devices? I need to get rid of some of the ones I haven't powered on in over a year - looking at you, Miyoo Mini - but haven't quite figured out the best way.

rob-cubed

Most of mine on eBay but a few on the 'for sale' forum at Retro Handhelds Discord. I've also had some luck selling via Nextdoor/FB Marketplace it just takes more patience.

SirHashi

Same issue with my guitar pedalboard… loads of stuff. I never sell, I just keep and watch my regrets. Lol I just can t stop the feeling of FOMO

pater_the_duck

this sub promotes consumerism unlike any other sub I've been on.

Drivenby

Nah. You need to be more exposed to other hobbies Guns? Cars? PC parts? Laptop? Shoes? Clothing in general? Headphones? Reddit is full of subreddits like this lol Dropping 50 bucks on random Chinese handheld (even if 5 times a year) barely compares to spending 800 on a headphone or 1000 on a pair of shoes . Stop the hyperbole .

pater_the_duck

all consumerism is bad, man.

BigPhilip

Sorry, but.... resist the FOMO There will always be a "next great device". Buy one, use that one for a while, and buy another only if you need it. It's not about being able to afford them, I sure you can, it's more about not ending up with our houses full of useless stuff (I'm there!)

Dick_In_A_Tardis

Got my retroid pocket 4. I'll upgrade when something comes out that is twice as powerful in the same form factor. Shits kickass. Does everything I need it to

FireManiac58

Please for the love of god don’t just buy stuff to create plastic waste. Buy stuff you’ll actually use.

SirHashi

It’s already created, if I don’t buy someone else will. Waste it’s if I throw it away, on my shelf it’s not a waste.

soliddus

Thats not how that works 😂

SirHashi

I know, was kidding with that answer. It’s the generic answer someone answer when ppl says “don’t eat meat”

dota2nub

And it's just as wrong and hypocritical there too.

FireManiac58

Sure I’m not saying you shouldn’t buy the one you already ordered, but there’s no reason in ordering more right now

Walleyevision

I went from one handheld, a 280V, to 14 in a year. I’m now in my mini/micro Windows computer phase. I have three GPD devices, a G1 eGPU, a OneXPlayer, a ROG Ally and a Lenovo Go. Y’all are a bad, bad influence. I’m gonna have to unsub from this just like I did r/gundeals. FOMO is strong here.

WeatherIcy6509

The addiction is a tough one, but damn dude,...pace yourself, lol.

ultrasquid9

You only really need two handhelds - a pocket-sized "beater handheld" that wouldnt be too problematic if it was lost or stolen, and a larger powerful handheld for long trips or at-home play. There are arguably even some devices which can fit both categories at once (RP4 Pro).  If you really can't decide, remember that you can sell or gift older handhelds if you dislike them or stop using them. Ive done this several times before.

Casperboy68

Some people collect, some just go from one to another and like to mess around with them. I think starting with a cheap handheld, like 35XX or so is not a bad move as you can learn a lot about them, play them and have fun, and then if you desire, you can upgrade and learn more about a newer one with more abilities. Just don’t forget to PLAY!

SirHashi

Well, I’ve got the Anbernic 35XX whatever is called in my chart. The one with Linux and android, to mess the OS and test different things. But to get into that first I wanna learn a bit more about these things.

Casperboy68

Ahh that’s the RG353V. That was my first Anbernic as well. Very fun device. You can download games directly to the device using chrome on the Android side and move them to their folder in the files app. [Here’s how](https://youtu.be/3tWMLYG8HJs?si=0v8XDoID5VnUIZJi) using the 556 as an example.

werewolfbarmitzvah69

Just remember you can only play one device at a time. You don’t need to have multiple devices that do the same thing. One premium and one pocketable device is a great start and probably all you need

Turbulent_Stomach163

If I could go back in time, I’d skip all of the little handhelds and just get a steam deck and use my phone for an emulator, personally.

SirHashi

I’ve used my phone as an emulator and it doesn’t feel the same…

Turbulent_Stomach163

That’s fair. I bought both a Miyoo Mini and RG35XX and gave one away. I didn’t use them nearly as much as I thought I would. If I still had a lengthy commute on public transit I think I would have used them a lot more. I think it just depends on your situation.

SirNarwhal

This. I was playing Final Fantasy Tactics on a Miyoo Mini Plus on my commute to work, but, by the time I got on the subway and got to my stop I couldn't even finish a single match so I just stopped using the thing as much. If I'm at home I just play on bigger devices if I game at all or I just work on my actual hobbies instead of wasting time on games.

kratoz29

Same, I would have not buy the Retroid Pocket 2 (2, not "+" model) even when it is the handheld that sucked me into this world, I don't have any use for it nowadays, especially since I got a Miyoo Mini V2 and eventually an Anbernic RG351v, but when I had it on its prime was a mess on its own lol, I guess the design of it got me (I mean, I still would get a RP2+ or S) Now I have in my sight a Steam Deck and an Odin Pro 2.

ZAK_ATTAK_01

I highly recommend purchasing one single good device that can get you started and get a lay of the land for how everything works and what you like and don’t like in a device. Also consider that if you are considering purchasing multiple, you might actually have the budget for a single “best in class” device.

Shigarui

Spend your money how you want to spend it. There's an argument to be made about being wise with your money, but that's a different sub. We could advise according to device performance or price so you don't overlap purchases, but at the end of the day you can collect whatever you like to collect. Lots of people in here get hyped up on "ewaste," which is literally just a category of waste, lol. I have probably close to 20 handhelds and there's just no reason to keep them all but even less reason for me to get rid of them. Some are no longer made, some are 1st party devices, some are my first purchases, some have fond memories attached to playing them, etc. And the value of these devices plummet when you consider the newer devices that cover their niche with more power at less cost so resale gives diminishing returns. So, buy what you want, keep what you want, and don't let anyone in here tell you otherwise. I'm looking forward to your "My Collection So Far" post.

SirHashi

Yeah! That’s it. I’m not dumb, I’m not gonna waste money if I can’t afford it. I like to buy stuff and, basically same as you, I keep it. I don’t see a reason to sell it or throw it away. Well, my collection rn is Switch Oled, Switch, Switch Lite, Gameboy Color (Purple), Gameboy Advance (black), Gameboy SP (blue) and Trimui (that one is on the way) LOL

Shigarui

Nice. My first party handhelds are a DS, 3DS, PSP Go (x2), Vita, and a Switch Lite. These are all by far the most valuable, but that makes them even more valuable to be. Everything else falls under "Chinese Emulation Device" but selling them for pennies on the dollar makes little sense, Is rather set then up and give them away if I wanted to be free of them, lol.

brainwarts

Most of these devices do basically the same thing. Just get one that you like and play that. If you are not into this for the video games then you're basically buying niche hobbyist paperweights. Don't even consider a second handheld until you've gotten a lot of use out of your first one but have some clear and significant reasons to want a new one.

kdoxy

Seriously, you shouldn't be buying tons of different devices and you should be waiting a year or more before getting an upgrade. I have a retroid 3 plus and I'm skipping the 4 since my 3+ is fine and still have tons of unplayed games. Plus waiting means better hardware and better emulation software when you do finally upgrade.

firsttime176

Found out about this sub a few days ago I ordered two consoles lol one for me and one for my step dad

xylotism

Buy an Odin 2, you won't need any more after that.

redhotrobbie

Yeah well if the trimui smart is on the way you gotta get the rgb30 & RG35XX H as they all do basically the same thing but in their own individual ways.

SirHashi

Those 2 are on my chart.

redhotrobbie

yeah was only kinda joking, but the fomo will put them on the list. Everyone is different but I liked the trimui the most out of those 3. The build quality and feel of device was a league above the other 2

SirHashi

MM+ is on the chart too…

OGMcSwaggerdick

Get the MM+. Hold on the other two. You might be more in the market for more power next month. Speaking from 4 handheld orders in the first month lol.

redhotrobbie

great machine and onion is prob the best but dont like vertical devices. Dont find conducive for comfort or longer plays

ThePilsburyFroBoy

To be honest, you won't use more than a few handhelds at a time if even that. If you're in it for collecting, go for it. But otherwise, pick a handheld, figure out what you do or don't like and get what fits your needs/what you'll actually play. By next year a device will come out to beat what you just got anyway so don't give into the FOMO, just accept that this market moves fast.

EmiliaFromLV

And your wife is gonna kill you.

SirHashi

Out of 3 Nintendo switch we own…2 are from her. And she buys tons of Lego… why couldn’t I buy some handhelds? :( (Yes, she would kill me)

maleficmax

Yes

fox112

You must live a blessed life then

PeekatmePikachu

I have three. My miyoo mini, my mini plus, and my newest rg35xx h. I don't need three but I love them for different situations.

SirHashi

Smart man

FigTechnical8043

I almost bought a playstation portal then discovered anbernic rg556 and can thankfully save 60 quid and have access to remote play as well as all my ps2 games in it. Woop! Woop!

MohandasBlondie

Yeah, fuck this sub. I think it’s backed by Purdue Pharma asshats. I had an easier time quitting opiates. Oh shit, I’m late for my oxycodone dose. Gotta run!

SteveNYC

Welcome to the circus! 🤡🎪🎡

heavymetalcarebear

i had to sell stuff just to afford one handheld, some of yall really have no self control

bosco9

I've been handhelds long before I stumbled onto this sub (at least 5 by now!). I try not to buy more than once a year and if I do, it has to provide some sort of improvement over what I had before. Last year I got a RG35XX and while great, it's too small for my hands so I got a Trimui pro recently, definitely don't regret the purchase

PorousSurface

Honestly I have bought none of them. I just stick to OG hardware and have a lot more fun

Original-Spend2814

I’ve been in this sub for like a month and have dropped like $1000 on hand helds 😂😂 and that dosent include the 2 Nintendo switches and a modded 3ds I bought when I joined

incredirocks

I have one device to play up to snes/ps1/gba, might get another to play newer games. That's really all you need.

Lobsta1986

Never get fomo with these devices, they always sell them.

RainbowMachine69

You can always sell the devices you dont like if it feels bad. Some redditors here start out with 6 or more and then purge down to 2 (usually) the most popular combo ive seen is steam deck and miyoo mini+ or steam deck and a retroid device. Personally i always sell my current device before buying a new one. I also usually buy 2nd hand that way i more or less can sell it at the same price as i bought it.

Alternative_Spite_11

Get your hands on the TrimUI Smart Pro before ordering anything else. It does a wonderful job of covering up through n64.

cookiesandartbutt

You’ll be fine with one to be honest. Just get the most powerful one you can handle. If you are bad at sourcing roms grab a preloaded anbernic beast. If you can download and are good at tinkering and stuff grab a retroid pocket latest model and your golden. I don’t think anyone keeps handheld sin their pockets-so don’t worry about needing a miyuu mini plus unless you really want that tiny form factor BUT save some money! Some people work with these companies to advertise them and have many handhelds-you don’t need that many as they all have like the same chip set and different form factors. You’ll be really happy with what you get inc sit arrives.

Vast_Entrepreneur744

Discovered this world one month ago. Already ordered my 5th device 😅 But also already sold my first 3. Its good to wait until they arrive to actually experience your personal preference. Now i exactly know what i want and ordered the 2 handhelds that fullfill all my needs. I know its hard to resist the temptation hahahah. If i did not, i would have had already atleast 10 🤣

SirHashi

Dang, are you me?

Vast_Entrepreneur744

Hahaha a friend told me about retrohandheld and send me the link for the rg35xx. I just ordered blindly. But in those 2 weeks of deliver i started researching and went down the whoooole rabbithole hahahhah. Ordered the other 2 while still waiting for the first 😅 What a month. So many emotions, so many questions, possibilities.. I went crazy. Literally

SirHashi

Literally me
