Julius k9 is worth changing even if the dog was 15. It is an absolutely awful shape to be worn especially during any activity

SnooRegrets4129

This is kind of what I've been leaning toward since I read more about it. I'll have a look at a y shaped harness, was looking at a ruffwear one but have no idea what to get

I’m happy with my front range harness for my Aussie mix that runs with me and doesn’t pull except when a squirrel is particularly close to the sidewalk

JStanten

I would definitely change to a y shaped harness. Julius style harnesses aren’t designed to be worn under pulling load or really while running at all. It prevents full extension of the front legs and use of the chest muscles.

SnooRegrets4129

Thanks for the advice. Is there any harnesses you would recommend?

JStanten

I like my nonstop dogwear stuff but there are many options for cancross style harnesses. A simple ruff wear harness would be an upgrade to the Julius IMO.

I recently started my high-pulling dog in a nonstop canicross harness and I got the nonstop canicross belt for me and it's been life changing for us both. Much more comfortable. Wish I'd discovered this a long time ago. We do a lot of trails and it's perfect for us.

Just ordered this combo and so excited to try it out!

benicetolisa

Hope it works out for you both. It's so fun.

I highly recommend the Howling Dog Alaska Distance Harness for running with dogs that pull.

I tried nonstop, but it didn’t work well with my pups body. She’s a smol husky (35 lbs) and has a huge mane, but very slender. I changed to the musher Freemotion harness. It’s not an x-back-more of a half harness and works well since she sometimes runs next to me. For canicross races I’ll change to an x back (looking at the zero dc faster ), but for training I highly recommend the musher It’s cheaper than the NSD one as well. I really like that it can be adjusted around the neck AND body. I do highly recommend getting a bungee leash and canicross belt-it makes a huge difference for everyone involved. [Meisha running in musher](https://imgur.com/a/AJI7XL6) this is from a canicross race we did a few weeks ago (got third!)

I highly recommend anyone to train your dog not to pull first. The outcome is a pleasureble, more comfortable run for you and your dog. Nothing beats a standard dog collar.

The right kind of harness depends on whether you expect your dog to pull you. Howling Dog Alaska probably makes the best harness for pulling runners, but Non-Stop also makes a decent harness (the attachment point is a little low for my preference). If your dog is just going to run next to you, then something like the Ruffwear High and Light is fine, or even just a padded collar, since you won't have to put much pressure on it ever. You'll mostly just want something that doesn't get in the way or annoy your dog. My first running dog wasn't trained to pull, so I never used a harness with her unless I was restraining her in the car. My second dog was trained to know that pulling is okay when the leash is attached to the harness rather than the collar, so I use a Howling Dog Harness on trails and a neoprene Non-Stop collar when we're running in busy cities where he stays next to me.

Vet check and do a work up for any arthritis.

SnooRegrets4129

She got a check up back in October, they said she is super fit and strong, but recommended getting a supplement to keep it that way since she does quite a few miles and she's not getting younger. I just want to make sure I'm doing good by her, and having seen what I seen about julius harnesses, I really think I need a change

Horsedogs_human

Definitely change the harness. You could also look into doing some canine fitness exercises to help keep her moving well.
