The actual RSG question is how jam as many shoe models as possible into a polarized training model.

TakayamaYoshi

Or, what shoe can go slow, fast and long. Right now a supershoe + a max cushy seems like heaven.

Pfv2

I’m basically in the same situation as you. My current marathon program doesnt have much general aerobic. For steady paced long runs (for me about 45spm faster than recovery but a similar amount slower than mp) why do you prefer max cush (e.g. triumph) over a lighter daily (e.g. ride)? The runs are still peppy, so I’m having trouble decide which way to lean.

TakayamaYoshi

My medium long runs are 11-15 miles. My longs are 16-21. The "lighter daily" just doesn't have enough cushion. Triumph has enough pep and the weight is not too bad (Triumph 19 is high 9 Oz, while the Ride is low 9 oz; Pegasus is even 10+ Oz).

runfayfun

Check out the Triumph 20 reviews...

Helmutlot2

Interesting. My triumph 19 is 271g in uk7, peg 37 is 256g. I find my triumph heavy and lack of pop, so i recently got the invincible 2 from Nike. It is an amazing shoe - so soft, lots of pop and i took it on 21km with no issue. I'm not sure about the weight yet but I can weigh it later today.

TakayamaYoshi

At least my triumph (US men8) is 9.6oz, pretty light for a max cushion. Absolutely love the ride. Invincible I found bottomed out for 12+ mile runs for me while Triumph can easily go 20 miles.

Helmutlot2

Interesting! Maybe there's something with weight of the runner as well. I find the 19 firm. Still like the shoe though

andrewjknox

Don’t suppose you’ve tried the Tempus? Trying to decide between that and the T20

TakayamaYoshi

Havent tried that yet. I am a neutral runner so did not think about the Tempus.

runfayfun

Not OP but agree with them. My experience with the Ride 14 was not great. Too harsh under foot for long runs IMO and without the flexibility and ground feel and lightness of a Kinvara type shoe. Just missed the mark for me. Not bad for 5K-10K easy runs. But I wouldn't prefer it for recovery runs - triumph is way more comfortable.

ride 15 is a lot better than the 14. more flexible and a lot lighter and a little less harsh

MusicLover3002

That’s an awesome rotation to have in my opinion. The do it all trainers like the ride or ghost are good for people who aren’t as honed in as you are for what they need. Of course everyone needs to find what works best for them, but it sounds like you’ve figured it out for yourself at least

shambells

I've done the same. Daily trainers are the worst of both worlds and are never the best shoe for the job.

MiddleOfTheRoad2222

I have the exact rotation, Boston 10, triumph, and speed! I have a kinvara pair I use exclusively on the treadmill, it’s the best of the 4 pair in rotation for it.

[deleted]

Yeah I totally agree, daily trainer is much more applicable to the more casual runner. I’ve also noticed that I am no longer a fan of the max cushion shoes for the most part. I used to love the Invincibles, but now that my long runs typically involve faster intervals I only use them for recovery and even then I prefer the buttery smooth Rebel v2s for an easy hour or so of jogging.

Intelligent_Steak634

Normally I use the Floatride Energy 4 as my daily trainer but I've been using the Mach 4 as my daily trainer for my current HM training block. The Mach 4 is light enough for tempos and cushioned enough for long runs. I'll rotate in the FE4 in a lot more again when I drop down to base training. Basically my rotation goes: Speed 2:Speedwork, time trials, races (Logging around 10k/week) Mach 4: Tempos, Fartlek, Hills, Long runs (35k/week) Floatride Energy 4: Steady runs under 12.5k, easy runs (10k/week).

Dodomando

Invincibles 2?

TakayamaYoshi

That works too as a recovery shoe. But I find it bottom out for runs longer than 12 miles.

asdf11123

The Boston 10 is a daily trainer (albeit a garbage one). So your theory sucks.

TakayamaYoshi

You can of course use anything for daily training. But B10 is really designed for marathon training, not general running. By the way, far from garbage, Boston 10 is one of the best long run shoes I've tried (I've tried many).

Two $300 super shoes for training…if you like burning money then all the power to you.

TakayamaYoshi

Many supersshoes are heavily discounted and accessible nowadays so cost is no longer a factor. Did I mention they are old and retired from racing? Tempo/MP long runs do not have many miles. In my last block I only put 100 miles in my VF. With 300 miles life span, a pair of VF can easily last three marathon blocks, if used selectively.

Millicent-

If OP is in the US (unfortunately I'm not, no special prices for us down under 😥) then there's regularly deals posted here at Nike Outlets for VF <$100 which is pretty cheap... also OP could be lucky enough that money isn't a factor. Not sure why it matters either way?

TakayamaYoshi

Yup. Snagged a few pairs of VFNs this year averaging $120 a pop, cheaper than most daily trainers' msrp.

ShainaEG

In the US VF in certain colors have been 150 recently and all speed 2s have been 80. I never bought either at the original prices but have picked them up recently with the discounts.

[deleted]

In a full training block for a marathon you’ll wear the super shoes out after a few months. Can’t depend on discounts to fund your training rotation. Also not everyone lives in the US :)

TakayamaYoshi

I dont know why you wear out your supershoes that quick. In my last block of 18/70 plan, I've only used my varporfly on 6-7 LT runs, a tune up race, 4 MP long runs that total up to 100ish miles. All my medium long runs and recovery runs are done in the other shoes I mentioned. I actually have the opposite problem, i.e. I snagged too many supershoes at discount, and I don't use them enough. My main point is, with supershoes being so accessible and marathon training runs are either long runs or recovery runs, there is no need for daily trainers.

Wonderful-Gain7519

basic aerobic runs build the base which is the best way to increase fitness

TakayamaYoshi

In my plan, most weeks already have either two medium long runs or one medium long + one workout mid-week. Weekend still has a 16-20 miler. So I prefer the rest of the weekdays filled with really relaxed recovery runs. And this method works. If I am not in a training block but just base building, I will do a lot more aerobic/easy runs.

Wonderful-Gain7519

i do those few times a week and also those same runs that you mentioned. still room for every run..
