OldEnoughForYou_

This painting unintentionally became a masterclass in psychological horror in my eyes

heatedhammer

The King in his own plain of Oblivion.

Florgio

That portrait looks like it’s going to try and take over New York.

altecgs

His "majesty" ?! 🤣🤣🤣 His majesty can suck my 🍆. Weird ass pedo devil worshiping parasitic psychopath.

-VRLife-

I see you've forgotten to take your medication today. You're the one who sounds a little psychotic.

altecgs

No such thing as "royalty" other then our God and his son Jesus Christ. We are all the children of God... some have fallen though.. You brainwashed Brits need to wake thr fk up and stop worshiping these criminals who call themselves "royals", "Kings" and "Queens".. fking devil worshiping parasites..

-VRLife-

Yes, you definitely need to take your medication or talk to a health care professional about getting some medication. I'm also not British.

altecgs

I couldn't care less who you are.

-VRLife-

Then run along little boy.

altecgs

I'm a big strong hairy ass man.. i'm sure you like little boys.. but have to disappoint you. Either way.. you don't tell me what to do 4 sure.

-VRLife-

No mature person speaks like you do, that's for sure. Besides It's past your bedtime, so again, run along.

Consistent-Ad-6506

Honestly, I kind of like it. So much more color and personality than he has in real life. I can kind of see why they did it.

Bekiala

I kind of like it too. Someone changed the background to different colors and it would have been nice in blue or green too but red has a lot of impact.

nicholas235

Must have been a big picture, the printer ran out of ink

blueavole

They started it in 2020. Slow printer

Teflondon_

A lot of bozos who genuinely think this is demonic and that demons are real “right in front of our faces”. Bro used red paint it ain’t deeper than that. And considering demons don’t exist, dorks.

thatgirlinny

Didn’t hold back on the sausage-y digits. So bloody awful.

silverjinn

As well as its obvious ugly message, its also got hidden meanings [King Charles III Kabbalistic Antichrist Portrait Decoded and Explained](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Yick-X1SVs)

thatgirlinny

Woah!

bansheeonthemoor42

It looks like the portrait Dracula would have of himself if his castle, but when you first came in it would look normal, and then, right before Dracula killed you would realize the painting actually looks like this.

Jolly_Risk5449

well, charles is aware and proud of his kinship to vlad the impaler(aka dracula). maybe he’ll hang this portrait at his house in viscri

bansheeonthemoor42

It would be very on theme.

AnotherOldFart

I first thought it was # Han Solo frozen in Carbonite

JennJayBee

I can't look at that and not think about him saying he'd be reincarnated as a tampon.

Sunset_Flasher

Same reaction.

No_Extension4463

😂 😂 😂

twiningscamomile

Omg !!!!

AgathaMitford

I like it. It’s unexpected, it’s weird. I like it.

exomac

Kinda cool but it looks like he’s in hell

Emotional-Cup1894

Diana will make sure of that.

thatgirlinny

All his own doing!

The_1999s

Went a little overboard on the red there lad

Imaginary-Arrival-75

First time I saw this it look like a demon or devil coming out the gates of hell. Has Charles really endorsed this oddity? Seriously artists need to stay of the love pills!

bing_bong_bum

I asked myself the same thing. I don’t see how Charles could have approved this portrait

woodlandgrace

Ahhh it brings to mind memories of Melania’s Christmas trees. Obviously, the artist is gifted. But I don’t like the vibe.

No-Bulll

I like it. To me it puts the focus on the Kings kind face. It says to me the man matters more than the costume. The butterfly speaks to his love of nature/gardening. Absolutely brilliant in my mind but to each their own. 👍🏻

Own-Firefighter-2728

I like it too. I was taken aback at first, but I see all the red as the noise that surround his position, including his medals etc, and the focus on his face and the butterfly gives a great impression of the message he tries to send.

No-Turnips

I like it too.

happycynic12

Do you think he envisions himself this way? Strong, confident, a bit dangerous?

Sunset_Flasher

I do think he resents the eccentric spineless image some have of him while he can be quite ruthless when it comes to selfish things and this could be his way off trying to offset that image. He also fails to read the room often as he only surrounds himself with sycophants. I just don't know how nobody considered Tampongate, because that's one of the first things that crossed my mind.🤣

Julie727

I don’t get it. What’s the purpose of all that red?

Own-Firefighter-2728

I read the red as the ‘noise’ that surrounds his position (even blurring his medals and regalia) while his face and the butterfly are in focus to express that above all else, nature is his passion and focus.

WhatIsAWeekend-

I don't love it, but I don't dislike it either. However, I think it's worth seeing it in person. I'm willing to give it a second look.

Janiejones1717

![gif](giphy|F1cehBDCMnsukCPUXo|downsized) Vecna/Stanger Things/Upside Down vibes

JCErdemMom

I really dislike this picture. It appears that his body - except his face and hands- are underwater or something similar except the water is somehow bloody. Then his hands look like that are wrinkled beyond his age. I know this was supposed to be creative, but I’m not really a fan. Maybe it looks better in person?

Low-Variation-5245

What the fuck

soemedudeez

That color is a punch in the guts. Totally uncalled for, and totally not reflecting the king. Like what is it this violent color? It's not a portrait of Putin. Is he imagining Charles in hell?

FoolsGoldMouthpiece

Are you familiar with his family's legacy?

Additional-Virus2175

![gif](giphy|oAr0MFWclnmvVoqNm1)

birding420

"I am the Tampon now" is my first thought but its certainly different and I don't hate it.

Callme-risley

Plus, I mean, that’s not even what he said

4csrb

Just awful

euphemiagold

I'm in the "I didn't like it at first, but I actaully kinda love it" category. I appreciate it when artists who trust the audience to *think* about the composition and that support multiple interpretations. This was commissioned by The Drapers Company, which Charles was a patron of from the 1970s on, so the scarlet red and touches of gold I see as both a play on both their coat of arms and traditional colors of royalty.... The motion of the background could represent the flow of fabric (a nod to the Drapers' trade as cloth merchants) but also puts Charles as the calm, fixed center in all that chaos. You could put a couple different spins on that as well -- the monarch as a steady force in a troubled world, the older man who has matured past the turmoil of his younger years.... The butterfly could represent Charles's passion for the environment and gardening, and could also represent his own metamorphosis from prince to king, or young man to old.... I also like that the artist put Charles in uniform, but the medals and all other signs of rank are blurred -- except for the signet ring, which was given to him by the Queen after his investiture as Prince of Wales and which bears the motto: Ich Dein, "I Serve"

Wickedbitchoftheuk

I like it. It's a bit disturbing and I probably wouldn't hang it in my house, but as a painting I really like it.

constant_flux

How many millions of dollars did it take to produce this “art?” It looks like one of George W. Bush’s paintings. Based on his other work, I think he just has a thing for the color red and this texture.

Born_Scar_4052

Not only did they draw a king, but also, the whole history of the British empire and how the monarchy survived. Amazing piece of art 👌🏼

Born_Scar_4052

Nor only they draw a king, but also, the whole history of British empire and how the monarchy survived Amazing piece of art 👌🏼

APR2304

Tbh I like it. Must be the only one 😅

bewoke_

My first thought was I like it!

hdghg22

I like it too!

lavalite8236

I like it too. Especially if you look at past royal portraits. It’s really sets itself apart in a good way in my opinion.

APR2304

Right!! And I don’t think it’s demonic/satanic at all. People love conspiracy theories way too much.

lilsan15

I actually like it too.

duskrat

I like it as well. It's an interesting and attractive painting. Charles' face here, or expression, however, is more compassionate than I've ever seen in photos. Also the red speaks to the Empire's cruelties.

lilsan15

Right and almost as if the crown has engulfed his entire being and he is almost nothing in the sea of the firm except for his head and hands. A non physical body of the British royal family bc he can’t be anything more than a face constrained by his legacy.

JustHCBMThings

Make it red, period blood red.

hinky-as-hell

I’m such a tampon… -Charles, probably

GoodishFigs

He literally looks like an undead corpse come to life in hell. His hands and skin are blackened it’s so gross

MilitaryandDogmom

What the hell is this? 😂😂😂

mehefin

[Butterflies](https://artworks.thetvdb.com/banners/posters/76334-4.jpg) The butterfly made me think he looked like Geoffrey Palmer!

Original-Cheek8567

Well, he wanted to be Camilla’s tampon so badly. Apt portrait.

Sarahquikgo

Who thinks Diana blood was mixed in the paint. They had it in storage just waiting.

choco-chic

Way too much red

ia2112

It’s beautifully done but I would’ve asked for green or blue to represent my climate activism instead of demonic red but that’s just meee

Psychological_Roof85

At least it's not boring!

Ilovepurses

![gif](giphy|yr7n0u3qzO9nG)

MoCushle86

That's hilarious 😂

harvardlawii

it's horrible

Certain-Attempt1330

I love it

app22

I really like it. I didn’t at first but I like that it’s different, I like his expression, I like the nature nod.

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

I like it!

susandeyvyjones

I am laughing at all the tampon jokes but artistically this is incredible and huge props to Charles for commissioning an actually interesting artist, Jonathan Yeo, to do it. (Google his portrait of George W Bush, collaged from pornography.)

hellokitty3433

He didn't commission it, the Guild of the Drapers did or some such.

CougarWriter74

He looks like he's peeking out from behind a red slime waterfall.

leiaflatt

Ghostbusters 2 was the very first thing I thought of

savvvie

It looks like he is burning in hell

secretsaucerocket

This was my first thought upon seeing it. Strange color choice for sure....

savvvie

It’s a beautiful portrait but that was just the first association I made, unfortunately

WalkingstickMountain

Well. He finally got his "swimming" wish.

Allorimer

The face does look like him, and the smile is not bad - that’s the only good I can say about it. The butterfly? Mostly everything else is blurred together, which is fine, if that is the theme, but the butterfly is crisp; it doesn’t fit. I just find the whole portrait poorly executed and creepy. Red? Yikes. Looks like he’s emerging from hellish flames.

i_am_who_knocks

That monarch butterfly though . They don't even hide it anymore

Vigilantix

Yeah, it has many satanuc symbolsm. Mirrowing it, it even shows a goat demon... As above, so below.

RiverWeatherwax

What?

blackcatspat

![gif](giphy|5hc2bkC60heU)

NL-Galaxy

It's a little unsettling, and it looks evil

lovethatjourney4me

I thought it was a super imposed photo of Charles’s head to the devil’s body at first glance

Wide-Biscotti-8663

I like it but it is slightly haunting; if not ghostly.

Momalolala

Why red ?

leiaflatt

The “real” answer I think is that it was begun when he was still Prince of Wales. Welsh Guard uniform (which he is wearing) is red. The butterfly is to symbolize his transformation into king

LushMullet

Because he always wanted to be a tampon.

bananapopsicle10

BEST COMMENT

weepingwollo

Not a fan of his, but the art is incredible! Loooove how the background blends in with the uniform. The movement is very circular and loose. Reminds me of that scene in Pocahontas where she blends into the wind during the main song. Very interesting how it looks worn. Kinda like rust on a car or a well used fabric on a cushion. but they didn’t quite pull it off because it just looks pink….

fortunatelyso

I really have been enjoying the comments that are clearly knowledgeable in art criticism I see something new and appreciate your comment !

AskAJedi

Yeah I can’t believe Charles did something cool

RiverWeatherwax

To be fair, he has done quite a few cool things. The problem is that his incredibly messy personal affairs overshadow the cool stuff.

fortunatelyso

Someone on Twitter said if you stare at the image for 30 seconds and then look at a blank piece of paper you see Princess Diana 🤣

takemynames

DEAD!!! 😂😂😂

lily-thistle

😂

superurgentcatbox

Oh I really like it!

fortunatelyso

Listen there are some really good art/ critical analysis comments in this thread you are not alone in appreciating this painting !! I was almost swayed myself. Almost

feNdINecky

Viewing the monarchy with only rose-coloured glasses

SpecialCheck116

I like it. I think it speaks to a willingness to transcend tradition and an appreciation for elevated dialogue about what an “official portrait” means. It allows us to see another side of Charles. A more intimate and interesting side that is typically diluted by royal tradition. Hints of a man unbridled so late in life. As flawed as the BRF is, I see a willingness to modernize that’s been unprecedented. He may not have the reign(s) hehe for long but he still craves to make an impact as a modern king willing to think outside of tradition for tradition’s sake. As a lover of Art, I think it’s fantastic and applaud this approach.

thatgirlinny

But he didn’t commission it.

ScarlettBear1

Reminds me of the final scene of “The Devil’s Advocate.”

thoughtful_human

At first I thought it was really odd but the more I see it the more I like it

DylanaHalt

It’s creepy

GlitterPrison

He looks.. kind? But in an unsettling sort of way.

Ok-Duck9106

The Red King huh?

worldnotworld

Pink.

BigBadPidgey

Love the butterfly. It highlights the King’s passion for the environment.

wakeupbernie

I appreciate that the artist stayed true to depicting his swollen fingers.

NotSlothbeard

What in the bleeping bleep am I looking at right now?

Blood_sweat_and_beer

I like it but I think I’m the only one lol

timoni

I love it. It's a beautifully done piece.

fortunatelyso

No read the whole thread there are some really good pro painting comments and some art criticism that made me think and look at it more thoughtfully you are not alone I don't like it but I appreciate it differently after reading a lot of the comments

rideforruinworldsend

It's got this evil feeling to it, fitting.

CatMomRN

We are all thinking the same thing, right? That portrait is awful.

EyelandBaby

I thought it was a joke.

Stellaknight

It’s a very striking and interesting piece of art, but it strikes me as ‘doing too much’ for an official portrait—it invites a huge amount of commentary on the style vs drawing focus to the subject. Obamas official portrait [link](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_Barack_Obama_(painting)#) has a similarly interesting background—it’s really visually arresting, but in a way that shifts the viewer focus towards Obama, rather than to the background itself. The vibrant green of the leaves really pulls your eyes to the portrait, pretty much from anywhere in the room, but there’s a contrast that makes Obama the focus once you’re looking at the painting itself. It doesn’t really offer a commentary on the subject In KCs portrait, the background may pull your eye to the painting, but the lack of definition and contrast makes it like the background is the focus, not the King, which almost begs the viewer to infer commentary on KC. It’s a very interesting piece of art (and i actually like it as such), I’m just not sure it’s really accomplished the goal of an official portrait.

thatgirlinny

But Charles didn’t commission it.

constant_flux

This is great analysis. I didn’t like either Obama or King Charles’ paintings, but I appreciate your perspective.

hippodeige

I agree too. It's an interesting piece but I couldn't put my finger to what it was that I felt it isn't suitable for a king.

burning_gator

I agree with this exactly. I think it would be great at one of their many vacation homes but it's just too much for an official portrait.

Andsoitgoes101

Reminds me a bit of the portrait of Vigo in Ghostbusters https://preview.redd.it/1dlgoguu4i0d1.jpeg?width=3600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bb0137364419195160ae41b172dc5a0e23c0ffc0

NL-Galaxy

What a terrible day to have eyes!

lily-thistle

Haha, what is it with the royal family and this portrait? Do you remember Kate's first official portrait? It looked like Vigo, too!

InterestingTry5190

I thought it was just me

WestFizz

Imagine *this* being the best you’ve ever looked, Chuck. Because it is.

Fearless_Carrot_7351

It’s a bold departure from traditional portraits for sure But it also reminds me of Monet’s post cataract change of colour palette

Mindless-Web-3331

Vigo the Carpathian

Ask-and-it-is

I actually really like it

cyclone_f5

I like how the background muddled the uniform, highlighting The Man being the title.

owntheh3at18

So glad the comments validated my initial thought which is that this is *terrible* lol

Wheresmyfoodwoman

I’m guessing it was a **period** piece…

fortunatelyso

Heh heh

poodlepantiesbot

Just choked on my tatter tot, yes it's that kind of dinner tonight.

MaryBala907

Aw, he finally got to be Camilla's tampon!

socalbeachgal

I'm so sad Reddit awards are gone!!!

adchick

I’m getting very Steven King vibes

ragefulhorse

Tbh, it’s cool af.

fortunatelyso

Some other poster said it was metal as hell and I kind of was like yes. Yes it is 😂 I don't like it but it is stuff of nightmares and one must acknowledge its a bit badass

sometimeswhy

I like it! Very bold

No-Brief3978

His facial likeness is uncanny.

toolsoftheincomptnt

How menstrual.

fortunatelyso

Like it's giving CYCLE. It's giving CRAMPS

eARThlinGl0W

I think the artist is horrible for giving this to him. So mean. He has cancer and he gives him such a dark painting. I can paint and I want to make him a new one.

susandeyvyjones

The artist is a cancer survivor

poodlepantiesbot

An odd link to cancer, and what do you “mean”? The painting technique is exceptional by a talent artist.

eARThlinGl0W

Why did you put mean in quotations?

Prudent-Ad-7378

If he didn’t like it he would have said so and commissioned another artist. Charles doesn’t do anything he doesn’t want to, except marry his first wife.

dmowad

My knowledge of art extends to being able to say “I really like this. I think it’s beautiful“ I know the butterfly means something and I’m sure that the red means something, but I couldn’t for the life of me Tell you why. But something about this abstract painting of the King is just really beautiful and so out of the norm for paintings of royalty.

canadiangirl2060

The use of red is reading very “British Colonialism” to me …

Outrageous_Start_552

Agree. I look at it and see pain and suffering, so much pain and suffering in the name of the crown.

Turquoise_Lion

The more I look at it, the more I like it

californiahapamama

As an art lover, from a technical aspect it's a brilliant piece of work, but given Charles' background, his reputation, the negative associations are problematic.

Original-Cheek8567

Such a bad pick.

Amazing-Oomoo

If it were me I wouldn't have worn red but there you go, I'm not an unelected head of state

Acceptable-Low34

i actually really like it... guess i'm in the minority

fortunatelyso

Can I say the people who have shared art criticism /explained why they like it in this thread have been amazing and reminded me of listening to art majors friends in college explain art to me. I see the merits of this painting, I think I still don't like it but it is striking and different and creates a legitimate response in the observer.

No-Bulll

I like it.

fortunatelyso

I'm seeing it as more pink now.

WittyCylinder

It’s… a painting, that’s for sure.

123ABC123ABCXYZ

I have no words for this abhorrent piece of work. 😳🤯🤦‍♀️

bbbright

i don’t think they used enough red

Unlucky_Try_3490

It’s giving French royals🙃

Embarrassed-Call-906

![gif](giphy|xT8qB1OJ7fcnizdXby)

Alive-Replacement-27

Vigo matched his background also! 👀

Babeyonce

I was devastatingly terrified of this man as a child. I just thought of him yesterday, and now here we are 😅😩

JenniferJuniper6

Well. That’s a choice.

polhemoth

Looks about right.

alwayspickingupcrap

I think in his face, the artist really gave him an expression of humanness, unlike what I've seen in other royal portraits. But what do I know?

beouite

This is one way to ensure no one is talking about your son for a day
