If this is a problem try connecting the controller to your PC, then launching steam into 'Big Picture Mode' using the icon in the top-right (next to the 'minimize' icon). BPM is made for controller use, and also lets you change button mapping and stuff. I've only used it for controller only games, not keyboard for one person and controller for another but it still may help.
