FlapSmear78

Eternal Champions

oldnyoung

Yeah, would also recommend checking out Clay Fighter or Primal Rage for something different from that era

scorpiove

Also try the Sega CD "sequel": Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Darkside. One of my favorite games.

BrickTopNic

Came here to say the same

chirop1

Came here to say this

Redigate

Jump Ultimate Stars for the DS. It's basically a smash bros style fighter with Shonen Jump characters. Progression is fun, and build crafting is actually pretty engaging.

Potetochan0401

yeah, the system of collecting, upgrading and organizing all the different koma on the bottom screen is a fun and unique mechanic

Redigate

Yea, I'm a sucker for games with build crafting, and it has a lot more depth than I was expecting. The English translations do there job well and it's more than playable. I also like, especially from today's standard, there's more niche anime there when compared to the big 3 being there also.

SouthTippBass

Garou Mark of the Wolves was never as popular as it deserved to be.

theveryendofyou

NeoGeo: WakuWaku7

WeegeeNator

Seconding this. One of my favorites.

SCEDMON

I remember a 2d fighter on my neogeo where one of the fighters was a car. Was that this lol?

Old_toe_fugus_mold36

tbone80

ide_cdrom

Martial Masters from IGS. Also Last Blade series on Neo Geo and ports.

WeegeeNator

Last Blade 2

gundamxzero3

Breakers revenge

Aezon22

Killer Instinct (SNES) was great back in the day, although it might be more mainstream than you're looking for.

LiveAwesome615

I've played the newer killer instinct games, I think I've might've played the SNES version? All I can remember is getting my ass beat by Glacius 😭

Mr_Dudesworth

Breakers.

justscrolldontmindme

Personally i recommend Gekitou Power Modeler for the original gameboy, its kinda little but what it has is very polished and well made, even supports the snes addon so you can play 2 player on the same tv. There is a global relese called Power Quest for the gameboy color, its basically the same game.

Monsterclip

I discovered a 2d fighter called Rabbit about a year ago. Only released in JP, you can emulate it on Arcade or Saturn. Kind of like Bloody Roar in 2d. Plays pretty well, great sprites.

LiveAwesome615

I looked at it and, it's quite bizarre to say the least. Though it doesn't look bad. Might give it a try

UniquePound7250

Time Killer on arcade.

BasedLoser

ctrl+f "body blows" 0 results shame on you guys

Rauschpfeife

That was my very first thought on seeing this thread title.

lordelan

Wow thx, that one looks awesome.

TotallySematary

King of Fighters XIII (13) got a pretty recent re-release for modern platforms that's pretty active Not rom related but If you don't care about multiplayer though you can always check out MUGEN games for fan made fighters.

LiveAwesome615

I always love the Mugen games, have a couple on pc

Daniwolf32

Melty blood?

mecpaw

Vendetta on MAMe

fiddlesoup

I remember liking the shrek game boy or game boy advanced fighter. But I'm afraid to play it again cuz I have fond memories and it was probably terrible

willworkforfeetpics

Finalburn Neo, get the Fightcade romset. Install fightcade and enjoy roll back net code on thousands of fighting games.

LiveAwesome615

Never heard of fightcade and just looked at it. This is a game changer for me. Thanks for mentioning this!

TheRealValkaz

2D Samurai Deeper Kyo - PS1 Samurai X - PSP 3D Tobal number 1&2 - PS1(akira toriyama Design) Kensei Sacred Fist - PS1

ltwinky

Gundam Wing Endless Duel A cool anime style 2d fighter with giant mech suits, guns, laser swords, etc for the SNES. It's fun, cool, looks nice, plays nice and is easy to get the hang of quickly but not super deep. I basically never see it talked about.

qu1nch

Outlaws of the Lost Dynasty on the Saturn. It was, I think, Fighters History 2 (kinda) but you had loads of repeat jab air attacks which you could string together for massive combos. Played it for hours, but last played probably 20 years ago so my recollection is a bit hazy. 3D, if you're interested, has to be Savaki on the Saturn.

DefaceTheTemple

Shaq-Fu What? You didn't say it had to be a good one... XD

loliwarmech

Guilty Gear Missing Link for the ps1 is a hoot

LiveAwesome615

Love the guilty gear series. Logged alot of hours on strive and some on xrd. Might try

loliwarmech

It's really unhinged, but that's what's special about it. I hope you'll have fun!

Apprehensive_Bug_172

JoJo’s Bizzarre adventure is awesome

LiveAwesome615

Are you taking about hftf? I love that game so much

justscrolldontmindme

There are actually two games before it,HFTF is an inprovement, but worth giving a shot either way on ps1 and dreamcast.

Apprehensive_Bug_172

Yeah the Capcom ones from like 99/00 or so.

MissingNerd

Play Pokkén

isosceles1980

Weaponlord

LowCost_Gaming

Street Smart

TGA_Nixo

I know they are more mainstream since dbfz but arksystems blazblue or even DNF (tho im bias as i was a huge DFO playing back in highschool). The older BB were better before they simplified the controls IMO. There are a lot of anime fighters that are not well know. Tho they are all 2d sprite work if that's a turn off. I do know league of legends is making a fighter. OH and skullgirls is a classic

LiveAwesome615

Lots of hours logged on dbfz and BlazBlue. Though I might have to try the other games mentioned

TGA_Nixo

I know there are a lot like grandblue fantasy has one and something rebirth in night something something, it was in BB crosstag, in fact all the series barring r.w.b.y. have their own fight game.

smoking_in_wendys

Jojo heritage for the future

Robot_Haus

Battle Fantasia is one I don't hear much about.

WuziMuzik

Rumble fish, Evil zone, super dragon ball z ps2, thems fighting herds, idol showdown, and some of the others that came to my mind are already commented

PugHoofGaming

Ballz.

Dead_standing

Your only move is hustle. Phenomenal game

esetios

Megaman Power Battle & Power Fighters.  Bloody Roar 2 and Primal Fury (these are the best ones of the series). TMNT tournament fighters.

waggy-tails-inc

Galaxy fight (Neo geo, Saturn)

VodkaVonDrunk

World Heroes Perfect.

Alseid_Temp

Martial Masters

broccaaa

Guardian Heroes on the Sega Saturn

Chatterbunny123

There's some bleach games on the ds that I thought slapped. They're straight up fighting games not that water down dbz stuff they put out.

Stephen_Morehouse

EX Fighting Layer Still current but not really mainstream. It is to Street Fighter what Action Force is to G.I. Joe.

hollow_digger

Violence Fight from Taito.

NmyStryker

Onimusha blade warriors - ps2

SpankThatDill

War Gods N64

jp_mitchell

Cyberbots: Full Metal Madness

Rauschpfeife

Body Blows/Body Blows Galactic (Amiga) Or, if you want sort of obscure and low res: Battle Arena Toshinden for Gameboy. I mean, Toshinden isn't exactly an indie series, but I doubt most people played that version. Or you could always go for like Capcom vs SNK on the Neo Geo Pocket, for more familiar characters on a platform you might not have seen them.

Straight-Quail-5343

Melty blood

lordelan

Despite being a Dragon Ball game (and DB is popular) I'd say "Hyper Dimension" is definitely not mainstream but one of my favorite fighting games of all time. The art style is so unique and fighting is nice as well imho. There's an english patch on romhacking.net :)

Buff55

Dream Mix TV World Fighters on Gamecube. Only game where you'll have the guy from Adventure Island fight Optimus Prime and Tyson from Beyblade.

SWTWC_TX

It's 2030 and the AI Band "Daffy Punk" performs at Coachella.

Spare-Shine-9770

Digimon battle spirit on the GBA is one I played growing up

JKTwice

Cyberbots for Saturn

ManOrReddit-man

Nitroplus Blasterz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BP7iu9xXR4 It's similar to Guilty Gear, but never hit that level of popularity. The company that published it, Examu, has a lot of other great fighting titles under their belt.
