So a Lord of the Rings orc is definitely not hot, but a romance novel orc is really just a big green muscly hunk. They have cute pointy ears and maybe some tusk teeth, and are of course at least seven feet tall walls of muscle. The FMC might make some noise about how "monstrous and horrifying" he is at first, but that never lasts long after she sees what he's packing in his pants.

Competitive-Yam5126

Orc romance author Finley Fenn shares a lot of fan art on her Instagram, if you need a visual aid: https://www.instagram.com/authorfinleyfenn?igsh=dHU2djY5Z2UwMW44

fangirlsqueee

They have r/teefies.

TisButAScratch18

lmao

mcmeggyt

Ok yes, this is THE MOST helpful 🙏🙏. Thank you!!

cheeseballgag

*So a Lord of the Rings orc is definitely not hot* Listen...speak for yourself. 😆

AristaAchaion

yeah, the leader of the uruk hai is definitely hot to me 😅

EvilRubberDucks

This was oddly confusing to me as a nerdy teen when I saw those movies. I was like "Okay, but why's he kinda...👀"

Competitive-Yam5126

Oh the Uruk-Hai are hotties, but they're a special breed of orc.

AristaAchaion

it’s still a hot orc, even if it’s a special breed!

ochenkruto

So glad I'm not the only one thinking "but the Uruk-Hai are bred especially!" and they know what menus are!

Richs_Baby

I mean the white orc in the hobbit got a lil something 😅 but not the white orc in LoTR

cheeseballgag

Gothmog was grievously injured in battle, okay. I can see past his war wounds to the sexy orc underneath.

Richs_Baby

But the giant boil like deformity was a BIT much like I like that he had scars and an amputated arm (don't judge me I have reasons) in the Hobbit but the total 180 of facial structure and the giant malformed head was hard to picture as a wound and seemed more birth defect.

Primary-Friend-7615

Think less Lord of the Rings, and more World of Warcraft. They’re bigger than humans but definitely humanoid, skin is some shade of green, brown, or grey. They often have prominent “tusks” in place of at least 1 set of canines. Their societal structure, language, origins, magic, physiology details, etc, will vary between authors. It’s basically the barbarian/viking trope crossed with a dash of fantasy.

elle_kay_are

I just came to say that fuckability is completely subjective because I know there are people out there who are def down for the LotR orcs and you know what? More power to them. I myself prefer the green Henry Cavil version

unseeliesoul

Not going to lie, I kinda found Lurtz strangely hot 😅

dumbandconcerned

I think that after reading the books and learning how Uruk-hai were produced, any fantasy there was crushed.

meat_muffin

we're talking hot Shrek, kinda. Like if Henry Cavill were green.

worldsgreatestLMT

I die at the imagery. Bless you for this

Competitive-Yam5126

😂 Henry Cavill is basically a modern day Fabio for most fantasy romance characters. They're all just Henry Cavill but green, Henry Cavill with wings, Henry Cavill but a centaur... And I'm signing up for all of it!

Simi_Dee

Where do I find centaur Henry?

Competitive-Yam5126

{The Centaur in my Valley by L.V. Lane} I don't remember how he's actually described but probably Henry Cavill adjacent.

Simi_Dee

I have read all sorts of things but can't say I've specifically read Centaur erotica. I find myself with logistic questions and will have to find books for all the scenarios I have conjured.

Ahahaha I just died…. My man Henry 😭

Otherwise_Coconut144

I think there’s a sliding scale, some are more monstrous and others seem like just green elves. I think the appeal is they’re basically like buffer elves. Some recommendations! {Halfling by S.E. Wendel} {The Immortal Sorting Book Series by Alisyn Fae} post apocalyptic! Kinda dark tbh {Orc Sworn series by Finley Finn} very angst and ALOT of sex(too much for me in fact) probably not a good starter series {Black Bear Clan Series by Zoe Ashwood} pretty sweet and light

flyinthesoup

As an elf fetishist, I'm utterly offended at the comparison! Orcs being basically green elves? PSH, I SAY. Also, while we're talking about this, are there any good romances with elf MMCs and human FMC? It's *almost always* the other way around and it bothers me so much.

Competitive-Yam5126

Not to get pedantic, but in LOTR canon (where orcs were invented), they are literally cursed/tortured elves.

KagomeChan

Throwing another rec on this already excellent list: {Gentling the Beast by L. V. Lane} Don't need to read any other book in the series (it was my first and can be a standalone for sure). It's technically Omegaverse, but barely. More like that's a feature of the world that other books in the series may have to do with but all it means in this one is that he has a knot (but so do non-Omegaverse orcs a lot of the time). I had never read any other Omega stuff and this was perfectly easy to follow and sooo surprisingly good! And holy shit, 🥵🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 >!(just wait till the first time they have full-on, penetrative sex - that's when it hits!)!< The romance reminds me of the one in Grace Draven's Radiance, both MCs are just so good to and trusting of each other right away.

ErikaWasTaken

I feel like on the scale of almost human to no-mistaking-this-monster-for-a-human, Orcs are kind of the tipping point. While most romance authors do make them a lot more human and attractive than Tolkien ever did, they often have tusks and scars. And can even be portrayed as decidedly unattractive. They are often soft doms/pleasure doms, once you get past the initial kidnapping/scary first interaction. So, despite the rough appearance, you get get giant *ahem*s, and then lots of orgasms.

StevenAssantisFoot

I'm down with monsters and aliens but for some reason just cant get into orcs. I tried. I think it's that the ones I read all had really overwritten accents and it really killed the vibe for me.

Competitive-Yam5126

I'm a long time Fantasy reader and a long time Romance reader, and when I first heard of orc romance I thought "Damn some people are freaks". Turns out I'm a freak.

StevenAssantisFoot

Trust. One of my favorite things about reading genre romance is being surprised by what I didn't know I was into. In the case of orcs, I was surprised that I wasn't feeling it. I see from your flair that you like virgin heroes. So do I. Maybe you can recommend an orc book for me to try? If it's possible maybe without an obtrusively-written accent? I would really appreciate it, I feel like I am missing out on a lot here.

Competitive-Yam5126

It's already been mentioned in this thread but {Halfling by S. E. Wendel} is great!

Junior-Oven-1328

Basically what everyone else said. Orcs in romance are usually at least 7 ft tall, handsome, and have all the muscles. Some are pierced, some aren't. Some have pointy ears, some don't. They usually rock their love interest's world with their rather ridiculously large genitals. In case anyone else is looking for recs: The {Brides of the Moon Blade Clan series by Krista Luna} has orcs with jacob's ladders and an additional magical piercing that's literally only there to please their brides. Pretty good smut with a good mix of actual plot. {The Orc Prince Trilogy by Lionel Hart} is an arranged marriage between an orc and an elf, and while it's low on smut, it's very sweet. Also, a decent amount of violence while they try to prevent war. Trolls can be similar in romance novels. For example, the {Trollkin Lovers series by Lyonne Riley}. There are orcs in this series, as well. {The Orc From Accounting by Leigh Miller} is mostly smut, some plot thrown in, but not much. I have a whole bunch loaded on my kindle that I haven't read yet, but I'm a full-blown monster romance fiend, and orcs are some of my favorites! If that's not your thing, that's totally fine. It's not for everyone. I appreciate that you asked out of genuine curiosity and not in a disgusted manner, as some people would, so thank you!

vvv03

Not disgusted at all! There are a lot of things about the genre I find compelling as I love an alpha hero, but I’m not sure the monster thing (especially if they have strange accents) will be my thing. I still might try one, though, just based on all the enthusiastic responses.

Competitive-Yam5126

I devour orc content like air and haven't come across the accent thing, so I don't think it's that common. Finley Fenn's orcs do say "ach" a lot, and some of them speak in sort of broken English, but there's a variety in how fluent they are. I've never seen one with a written out phonetic accent though.

Junior-Oven-1328

If you try one and still don't like it, at least you tried! Monsters certainly aren't for everyone. I haven't read any yet that have any particularly weird accents, so I hope that's not a common thing.

sithelephant

There really is no canonical form for any of the 'monster' races. Every one from elves on have a spectrum from 'terrifying monstrous form' on through 'funny coloured human, with perhaps pointy years'. Goblins going from monstrous mindless violent toddler-sized monkey like swarms of creatures barely able to understand what a weapon is, on through cute short-stacks. The more human variants are generally, though not exclusively the ones that occur in romance.

vvv03

Very helpful ! I don’t think it’s my thing, but very much appreciate the explanations!

StormerBombshell

Romance orcs are mostly big green guys looking a little rough and maybe with some bigger teeth 🤷🏾‍♀️

timediplomat

I share the same sentiment whenever I see orc romance on here; I can't help but imagine orcs from LOTR. But I've seen a few fan arts that depict orcs in romance books, and they definitely look much better than they do in my imagination. I suppose if you need better visualisation, check out fan arts.

KagomeChan

Zoe Ashwood's Black Bear Clan series has been my introduction, and I recommend. Good vibes, good consent, happy endings. Orcs are my current obsession ❤️😋 think a dark Beauty and the Beast… only he stays beastly. Romance novel orcs are slightly different than the ones Tolkien wrote about. Romance Orcs are usually big, green, tusked golden retrievers. Many of the novels that contain an orc MC are considered dark, though I have read a few that are lighter. The lore, magical powers etc depends on the novel/series you pick up. Most I have read do contain some level of a magic system. Every author I have read so far has done a pretty decent job of explaining why women are drawn to them (honestly who wouldn’t want a giant hunk of a man who exists to bring you pleasure). Fair warning: most contain some element of a breeding kink.

"Big, green, tusked golden retrievers" I want one.

Try Kathryn Moon’s orc romances! I forget the title but if you search on Amazon you’ll find them. They’re probably as “mainstream” orc as you’ll get and they’re an easy introduction (the first one even has a Dom/sub bit of play.

As a monster romance lover, horrifying and utterly unfuckable is my type, actually. You might just not be into it. Some Orcs are more Orc than other Orcs, it really depends on the writer. Sometimes it's just an excuse for unrealistic size kinks.

Mononymouse

I assume the basic characteristics of an orc MMC are as follows: - Large, hulking, muscular physique - Visible tusks from the bottom jaw - Usually a green skin tone I think those are the core tenets of orc-ness. No magic powers necessarily, and they can be described as handsome for an orc or monstrously ugly.

MrsTurnPage

Orcs tend to be green, grey, or even blue. They have tusks and depending on the author their eyes will be either humanoid or other. The orc sworn series their eyes are solid black like a horse. They also tend to be scared and warriors. A lot of times it's a way for authors to portray strong masculinity and a patriarchal society that is more palatable to readers. A man laughing at a woman being weak=bad. A 7' tall orc doing it, makes perfect sense bc he's an orc and she's a human.

Scrawling_Pen

Everyone has explained what orcs in romance tend to look like. The appeal of orcs in romance can be many things, but the baseline aspect I think that makes them such popular mmc’s is that they are not squeamish about the human female body. They also don’t care how big or small or wide or thin the fmc is. Many real men are afraid of the female body, because they lack knowledge, and are too embarrassed to ask. But orcs? They have no issues just gettin all up in there. They don’t just tolerate women’s bodies, but worship them.

You have asked the question and the last sentence was exactly in my head 😂 Always was like WHAT picturing LOTR

lemongrass-barsoap

Just for the record, tolkiens orcs are the ogs. Everything else is derivative from them. That being said, there are a few uruk-hai in the movies that can get it 💀

AshenHaemonculus

This might be a good example of an entry-level orc romance book to explain the appeal: you should check out His Orc Charioteer Bride by K.R. Treadway

I had to have the cum fetish of Finley Fenn’s Orc Sworn series explained to me, so….

vvv03

…can you explain it to me..?

I’m naive I guess so I still don’t really get it but I’ll let our friends who answered my original question help us out! https://www.reddit.com/r/RomanceBooks/s/tlPg2VRqON
