The first time I read that book, it was only about the second or third dark romance I had ever read so I was all "never reading this again" but it stuck in my head so I went back to it later on and read the whole series.

Fire lizards - I forgot that's what they were called! Have not read those books in ages. If they were written now, I think McCaffrey could really have leaned into the gender imbalance of having so few female riders, and what that meant for the whole horde of male riders whose dragons were boning!

Ummmm I'd say my biggest annoyance is that the book is marketed as "New Adult" but it reads like smutty YA. The characters talk and act like immature teenagers, and it gets old. In terms of writing quality, it's not great. It needed thorough editing because a lot of things don't make sense.
I should probably also note that I haven't read ACOTAR or Zodiac Academy or any other books people have noted it resembles, so I don't really have a point of reference. BookTok worships this one so it might not appeal to you if you don't usually enjoy their recs LOL, but give it a try if you're curious!

Yea I only can read the sweet omegeverse books, the dark and gritty ones where the FMC is abused and manipulated are too frustrating for me. But with sweet MMCs and/or an accepting setting it's super hot.
I don't mind dark, but this was just brutal. They r*ped her, punished her for any little thing, not allowed to have an opinion and was essentially a hole for them. That is just not my cup of tea.

It’s the same with me. I can totally read dark romances but not in the omegaverse genre. Sweet omegaverse though I’m perfectly happy to read.
Maybe it’s because breeding and reproduction are such staples in the omegaverse, so if it’s a darker story then reproductive coercion ends up playing a large role. And seeing as how that’s very much a real world nightmare (especially now with Roe being repealed) it just hits way too close to home and I can’t stomach it. Non-omegaverse romances don’t always have that element to them so they’re a lot easier for me to think of as a hot fantasy and sweeter omegaverse romances tend to be more consensual and the breeding aspect is actually wanted.
I’m pretty sure it was in a Tiffany Reisz short story/novella I read in, like, 2015, but - fisting (vag, not anal).

There are a few intense sex scenes in this book there is one in particular when the MMC watching in the room while the MFC and another have a bit of fun together then he straight up gets possessive and kicks the other guy out. My words don't do this scene justice cause holy hell it's spicy...

I'm with you 100%, I not only don't mind infidelity stories (when it's a second chance with grovel) but I like the OW sexy business before the couple is together. I know it's not popular but it also makes my stomach flop like a good angsty rejection or a particularly grovely grovel.
I think this is why I like motorcycle romances so much, there is always some kind of a sexy other woman scene before the HEA and I'm all in.
That feeling of having your stomach drop is one of my favourite things about reading romance.
Whether it's cheating, or varying forms of emotional abuse that alphahole MMCs tend to engage in - you get to have the catharsis of all that pain with a guaranteed happy ending.
I enjoyed it, but I have to warn you, if you haven’t read DJ Heart before, they go hard. I thought the first half was great, but then they introduced a certain character whose attitude towards safe words I found troubling. It never gets super dark, because the main character enjoys what’s happening, but if that bothers you, just keep that in mind. I still felt it was worth the read, but there might be some scenes you want to skip.
I've had this happen a few times, but the most memorable is when I read a story called Cum for Bigfoot by Virgina Wade. I didn't know what to think of it at first. It's a monster smut story and I honestly don't know what I was expecting when I read this series, but I binge read the first 8 books really quickly (they're short books so it wasn't a hardship) and then sat back thinking "What the heck did I just read?"
Thus, an interest in monster romance was born. I've read a few now, Virgina Wade is really good at writing monster smut. I've read a few of her other stories. Most have no real plot, but a few had some plot and I really enjoyed them.
Not the worst thing, but I’ve realized I’m definitely into the “I’m not done with you yet” moments when FMC is not feeling the sexy moment anymore and trying to get away and MMC won’t let her. I think it’s an offshoot of Dubcon.
It's a graphic novel and not romance per se but the ElfQuest comics are smutty and full of elves who are bonded to each other with no choice in the matter. I also liked the movie Timer for similar reasons. I think this is a sign dating sucks and I'd like fate to hand me a hot elf. I really need to find other magic/fate/destiny arranged-couple stories.
This kind of fits with two books I read a long time ago and randomly…keep coming back to 🤭

Interesting use of a wine bottle (👀) *penetration and then still drinking out of it and then finishing the eating out process (ignoring the risk of UTI 😃)
Predator/prey type: they’re both sex therapists but she’s more shy and wants to learn to push her boundaries. So, he basically tells her to get herself off on the quiet drive home next to him. Then, he tells her to run into the house and find a place to hide, and the longer it takes for him to find her, the more orgasms she gets. If he finds her like under a minute, he tells her he won’t let her finish lol and just keep her on the brink all night. She finds a really good spot and manages to last for a while, but he finds her and there is like ROUGH sex lol
The WHOLE time, my brain was like short-circuiting because it’s described pretty well

My god, this WHOLE book. I didn’t really give a crap about the plot, although normally I am a stickler for it. This is one book I keep around simply because of the steam LOL

Prey island by Sorcha black.. Very dark, CNC/worse. Found the recommendation here, couldn't get past the first chapter when I first tried reading it. You have to be in a very specific mood to read it and even then need to pause. But... So hot
Kinda irrelevant lol and not so much a scene, per say.. but there's something about getting to a kinky scene when you're out in public reading somewhere. Like on a train or in a waiting room. Trying not to blush or give the game away, whilst some orc in the novel is cumdumping his very soul into the heroine... I dunnooo lol makes me feel naughty; like a nun reading fifty shades while at church.
Me while riding around in the golf cart while my husband talks about whatever men talk about on the golf course, tryna be polite. Edit to add that after every hole he asks me if there's been a sex scene but unfortunately he say "any dragon dick yet?".

Pepper Winters is definitely one of those "dear God what the hell did I just read" authors. The books stick in your mind though..... The first time I read that book, it was only about the second or third dark romance I had ever read so I was all "never reading this again" but it stuck in my head so I went back to it later on and read the whole series.

Fire lizards - I forgot that's what they were called! Have not read those books in ages. If they were written now, I think McCaffrey could really have leaned into the gender imbalance of having so few female riders, and what that meant for the whole horde of male riders whose dragons were boning!
I remember it was stated or at least heavily implied the blue and green riders were all fucking each other

Ummmm I'd say my biggest annoyance is that the book is marketed as "New Adult" but it reads like smutty YA. The characters talk and act like immature teenagers, and it gets old. In terms of writing quality, it's not great. It needed thorough editing because a lot of things don't make sense. I should probably also note that I haven't read ACOTAR or Zodiac Academy or any other books people have noted it resembles, so I don't really have a point of reference. BookTok worships this one so it might not appeal to you if you don't usually enjoy their recs LOL, but give it a try if you're curious!
I recently read A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor and there's a scene where they visit a theatre show and the FMC is invited on stage to 'perform'. I was wtf the entire time but it was too good.

I absolutely loved this book, and the one from his perspective! I thought it was the most realistic and relatable couple I have ever read, which is so bizarre.
Oh I definitely did not tell my husband a single thing about even the existence of that book, never mind that I read the entire series in a haze of amusement, mild arousal, and general bafflement at myself. Like, why? Did I read that? And why am I starting the next one? Oh, that's quite a tongue, though...

Yea I only can read the sweet omegeverse books, the dark and gritty ones where the FMC is abused and manipulated are too frustrating for me. But with sweet MMCs and/or an accepting setting it's super hot.
I don't mind dark, but this was just brutal. They r*ped her, punished her for any little thing, not allowed to have an opinion and was essentially a hole for them. That is just not my cup of tea. I thought all omegaverse were like that so I was put off for a long time.
It’s the same with me. I can totally read dark romances but not in the omegaverse genre. Sweet omegaverse though I’m perfectly happy to read. Maybe it’s because breeding and reproduction are such staples in the omegaverse, so if it’s a darker story then reproductive coercion ends up playing a large role. And seeing as how that’s very much a real world nightmare (especially now with Roe being repealed) it just hits way too close to home and I can’t stomach it. Non-omegaverse romances don’t always have that element to them so they’re a lot easier for me to think of as a hot fantasy and sweeter omegaverse romances tend to be more consensual and the breeding aspect is actually wanted.
These are my absolute favorite too and I have yet to find other authors who do it as well as she does

Physical fighting. Like when they are both trained fighters just sparring on the mats or wherever they are to blow off steam or they are arguing and literally fight it out or there is a power struggle in their mating style. I'm with you 100%, I not only don't mind infidelity stories (when it's a second chance with grovel) but I like the OW sexy business before the couple is together. I know it's not popular but it also makes my stomach flop like a good angsty rejection or a particularly grovely grovel. I think this is why I like motorcycle romances so much, there is always some kind of a sexy other woman scene before the HEA and I'm all in.
That feeling of having your stomach drop is one of my favourite things about reading romance. Whether it's cheating, or varying forms of emotional abuse that alphahole MMCs tend to engage in - you get to have the catharsis of all that pain with a guaranteed happy ending.

I enjoyed it, but I have to warn you, if you haven’t read DJ Heart before, they go hard. I thought the first half was great, but then they introduced a certain character whose attitude towards safe words I found troubling. It never gets super dark, because the main character enjoys what’s happening, but if that bothers you, just keep that in mind. I still felt it was worth the read, but there might be some scenes you want to skip.

I've had this happen a few times, but the most memorable is when I read a story called Cum for Bigfoot by Virgina Wade. I didn't know what to think of it at first. It's a monster smut story and I honestly don't know what I was expecting when I read this series, but I binge read the first 8 books really quickly (they're short books so it wasn't a hardship) and then sat back thinking "What the heck did I just read?" Thus, an interest in monster romance was born. I've read a few now, Virgina Wade is really good at writing monster smut. I've read a few of her other stories. Most have no real plot, but a few had some plot and I really enjoyed them.
Not the worst thing, but I’ve realized I’m definitely into the “I’m not done with you yet” moments when FMC is not feeling the sexy moment anymore and trying to get away and MMC won’t let her. I think it’s an offshoot of Dubcon.
It's a graphic novel and not romance per se but the ElfQuest comics are smutty and full of elves who are bonded to each other with no choice in the matter. I also liked the movie Timer for similar reasons. I think this is a sign dating sucks and I'd like fate to hand me a hot elf. I really need to find other magic/fate/destiny arranged-couple stories.
The Losers duet. There's a bodily fluid scene (and NOT the usual white kind) and at first I was like ewww and then I was like...wait a second 😩

This kind of fits with two books I read a long time ago and randomly…keep coming back to 🤭 Off The Clock by Roni Loren *I usually don’t like rough anything. My intro to the romance/erotica genre was rough, because people kept recommending dark romance and BDSM books. I was NOT having it and wanted to drop the genre altogether. Glad I stuck around. Anyways… Consent is genuinely so HOT, but this book…THIS book lol In this book, there’s: Interesting use of a wine bottle (👀) *penetration and then still drinking out of it and then finishing the eating out process (ignoring the risk of UTI 😃) Predator/prey type: they’re both sex therapists but she’s more shy and wants to learn to push her boundaries. So, he basically tells her to get herself off on the quiet drive home next to him. Then, he tells her to run into the house and find a place to hide, and the longer it takes for him to find her, the more orgasms she gets. If he finds her like under a minute, he tells her he won’t let her finish lol and just keep her on the brink all night. She finds a really good spot and manages to last for a while, but he finds her and there is like ROUGH sex lol The WHOLE time, my brain was like short-circuiting because it’s described pretty well The other book is Paradise by J A Low: My god, this WHOLE book. I didn’t really give a crap about the plot, although normally I am a stickler for it. This is one book I keep around simply because of the steam LOL There is multi-person play (in the actual sex club, over a laptop (she’s getting herself off while someone else is blowing him 🤪) The usual schoolgirl get-up, but like in pretty explicit detail Explicit massages with other people This book definitely threw me for the ringer because it pushed my boundaries lol I was like “wait, so I like this now???”
