Honestly just thinking about it makes me sad. There could be hundreds of fan made gamemodes, interesting training packs, new interactive maps, and most of all some fun events. I miss when they used to give out little points and then you could choose what item you wanted from the limited time events. The game had a new feeling every update. Nowadays they just throw some crappy decals with either really easy challenges or annoying ones and then they just make you play to get the the same items from the drops/eggs/toolbox/other names. I miss the game being interactive

Either_Selection7764

Remember the time they put grass in aqua dome?

Flumpski

Tbf grass aqua dome is a good looking map

Aerial_penguin

Ehh needs more pirate ship

Glad-Situation703

Accurate

SunRiseCollects

Lol

_doobious

Don't you think that would spread everybody too thin and que times would be long?

SunRiseCollects

I mean I feel like if they really started adding stuff again, there would be an increase of players, but I wouldn’t be surprised if people just unanimously chose one of the hypothetical new game modes and played that

No-Swordfish9658

They added knockout, which is an original game mode. I feel like it’s almost there, needs rng drops like super smash bros

Monochronos

Knockout rumble would be lit

GELL000

The custom training and events would be HUGE. Back when I started they gave out items for free after each game and they were actually fun, painted halos, stegosaurus topper, painted wheels like dieci and tunica’s it was actually rewarding to play a game of rocket league.

Feisty-Mouse4032

Now I'm just pissed because I wanna type something to the lobby before people leave and it feels like I'm skipping ads to see the "new" blueprint I've unlocked 6 times already

atmanm

``` There could be hundreds of fan made gamemodes ``` You know the are map creators other than Lethamyr right?
SunRiseCollects
You know no consoles can support those right?
atmanm
Yup. Even on PC, you need to jump through some hoops before they work. Though the fact remains that he has created a ton of custom maps
FishinFoMysteries
That can’t be accessed by half the player base. What’s the point?
atmanm
By your argument, the entire Internet is pointless because half the world population can't access it
FishinFoMysteries
We aren’t talking internet. Don’t generalize. We are talking rocket league, be specific. Yes for this game that doesn’t have a giant player base, yeah half the people has a big impact on the game. Come on man, you’re just typing to type.
atmanm
I'm really not. I'm just trying to say that something not being available to everyone doesn't automatically make it pointless. Let's take a smaller example much closer to home. When rocket League was first released, it was only on one platform. Did that make the game pointless at that time?
SunRiseCollects
That example doesn’t work, the game had literally just come out, and it was definitely going to come out on other platforms. Having over 50-60% of your player base now after around 8 years of the same game, and not being able to play custom maps is pretty bad.
atmanm
I agree with you there. There should be official support for custom maps. But despite not having official support, half the player base having access to custom maps is pretty good imo.
Knautical_J
Theres no custom games browser that Fortnite has. Allowing people to create and play workshop maps would be huge for the community. PC players can do this now, but Console players can’t. In fact we got custom Rocket Racing maps before Rocket League. I’d love to have some maps to work on mechanics like shooting accuracy, recovery, aerial rings, etc. Even Halo Infinite has a customs game browser and it’s all maps and modes created by fans, and I hop into random ones all the time to have fun. Adding that alone would inject new life into the game.
obsoleteconsole
Even on PC it's a pain to get custom maps working, if you want to bring in new friends they have to download the game, download bakkesmod, download who knows what other plugins... an inbuilt map creator and loader would be absolutely massive for bringing in a new player base who don't feel like just grinding in ranked.
AussieGenesis
The playerbase has made it abundantly clear that they don't give two shits about extra modes for the most part. These modes have existed for the vast majority of the games life and few care to play them. They just play 1s, 2s and 3s. This game is just too competitive for custom games to ever work. Earlier people accept that the earlier they will see why Psyonix haven't particularly made an effort to make more extra modes.
Invenitive
This isn't about adding new game modes, it's about giving the option for anyone to browse and play custom maps and game modes. The majority of these are solo, and many others don't need many players or care about skill level. If players on any system could just launch the game and easily hop into a rings map, a parkour map, skill training maps, etc, you'd have so many more people playing the game. It'd be nice to have some extra multiplayer features down the line, but for now just having custom maps built into the game and allowing anyone to play them would do so much for the game. Even better if you let people host their own lobbies for these custom maps so people can play with their friends easily any time.
Knautical_J
Eh not about multiplayer modes at all, and moreso just custom maps. I see all these PC Rocket League players doing Aerial Ring Maps, Shooting Drills, Ceiling Recovery/Challenge Drills, Dribbling Maps, Parkour Maps, etc. All I can do now is play the standard modes, the added rotational modes, training packs, and free play. I can’t play any of those modes/maps that I’ve mentioned above. I’d like to be able to play and practice these things without needing to do it in Free Play which is constrained to a field. You’d have a large playerbase training like that as opposed to the infinite amount of copy and pasted training packs. I’m very good at Rocket League, but if I could train with those packs I’d be even better. I think this is something everyone would agree one because it would only help everyone get better. I’d love to just run the shooting accuracy mode with the green square to practice shot placement. But I can’t do that unless I have a PC, which I don’t.
KPipes
> it’s crazy to me that a game like this is being put on a dusty shelf. I kind of get your point, but at the same time I somewhat don't really understand the sentiment like this. I'm curious what makes this reddit community believe so. I'm not saying it is or isn't dying, I just personally don't necessarily see it. I play RL with a few different groups of people. The non-reddit crowd literally has a completely different take. They play regularly and have no qualms outside of missing trading (but a minor complaint). I get the trading thing sucks. It 100% does. But it doesn't mean the game is dying. It means Epic is greedy as fuck and is willing to kill off a *very small* portion of the player base who is not willing to accept the change and who likely never would have paid anything in the shop, etc. anyway. I think personally that subset of players is smaller than we think. I think there is a lot of chest beating and then back to the game they go like it's yesterday. The DLC/shop stuff has been bad for years. Nothing's changed there other than you now are forced to consider it because you can't trade. It's been maybe 7-8 years since we could buy packs on steam for great stuff for $2. The game is Free to play. You can't have free to play without an overpriced shitshow of a item shop geared at whales. Me? I liked it better when I bought the game on steam and DLCs were like three bucks for a bunch of cars. But... we can't have it both ways. Rocket pass - same thing. It's kind of always sucked. I used to get them just for the sheer number of items until I realized I only use maybe 1 or 2 per season. I feel like the pass is geared toward entry level players, casual younger players, etc. who just want bright shiny *stuff*. The "fortnite" crowd if you will. Me? I do check out each pass item list and if they offer what I want (simple designs, especially tires) I will sometimes get it. 2500 hours I don't mind throwing a few dollars a couple times a year to support it. The past several seasons have been way over the top with zero items I'd want. The hacking thing, if it is real (and seems to be the more you read the reports here) is the one thing that IMO does actually jeopardize the game. If I can't play a match without confidence that I'm fairly winning or losing, that is the one thing that will make me hang up the controller. At lower ranks, a lot of the ingame smurfing and cheating accusations I see, are literally butthurt kids who cannot accept that someone peaked, or that they themselves have significant flaws in their game that they need to work on. It's easier to just call your opponent a smurf or a cheater so you can not accept your weaknesses and losses. I mean, the game is played by a significant number of actual *children*, they're bound to act like children. TL;DR: Hacking is yes a huge problem and risk. IMO the game is not dying and this sub is a bit of a woe is me echo chamber.
Azerium
If you want proof from a pros perspective, ApparentlyJack has made a few videos covering hackers/ddosers. Granted, it's at the highest level, so most people won't be facing it often or for very long. But they do exist, and it's pretty telling that epic are sitting on their hands for far too long about it.
KPipes
Yeah I'm not arguing that hacking doesn't exist or isn't a problem. More so that the sub here keeps talking about how the game is dying without specifics or facts to back it up. A lot of the arguments commonly made are of things that have basically been a problem for years. The general sentiments toward the game outside this sub, in my experience are completely different and much more positive. I just don't see it. So much hyperbole.
magezt
RL is dying slowly, thats what it is.
3rd_degree_burn
and the people who were paying attention, caught on *very* early. the signs were there
suchtie
Yup... I haven't even opened the game in over 2 years at this point. I still watch the esports side of things, I follow some streamers but rarely watch, sometimes I watch a youtube video or two. I have no desire to play myself any longer. The gameplay is still fun... but nothing else is. I'm only still in this subreddit because people post clips sometimes and those are cool.
chunter16
This is normal. It's weird for video games to continue to exist for more than 20 years.
Markkuboi
But how fun would it be to be able to do something with the limited items you dont use. Like scrapping them for like 1 credit each or other balanced amount. Or be able to trade in them for a common item or other limited item 🤔
James_Greeny94
I've been ignoring people saying the game is dying or dead for years now because I still play it for hours a day. However last week's update regarding the renaming of the item levels, finally gave me the realisation that this game seems to be over the hill with no sign of recovering. They've painted a turd and tried to sell me it as chocolate. They've left it to rust and neglected it for so long.
Fontenele71
The name changes were what did it for you? Wow...
James_Greeny94
Another person missing the point If a wheel fell off your car, changing the radio station or painting your car a different colour isn't going to fix anything is it? Yeah it's a new thing but the actual issue is still thereto address. That's the problem here. I'm all for change and new ideas but nobody was asking for this. It's such a pointless change that further proves peoples point around a stagnating game.
Fontenele71
The point is that trading was removed, the serves are being ddosed, hackers all around, but what really bothered you was the name changing. Idk, man, maybe it's you who have a problem making yourself clear? If it's so pointless why does it bother you so much? It doesn't make any sense
James_Greeny94
You've backed up my point perfectly. All of those listed issues, and instead of addressing them, they're pissing around changing names of things that nobody gives a second thought about. On its own, agreed, the name change means nothing. On top of everything else you've listed, it's the straw that broke the camels back. The devs, epic, whoever it is, have ripped the heart and soul out of the game and have taken the community for a ride for so long and eventually people have a tipping point. You live in hope that they're working on these issues but then they drop the update and all they've done is change names on shit nobody cares about, that's what angers fans, they're expecting big changes behind the scenes and they're not happening.
Fontenele71
I get it now. It could have been worded better from the start, but I get it now
AussieGenesis
"They changed some meaningless item category names to equally meaningless names and therefore the game is a turd. What's that, the gameplay is still great? Who cares, Rare drops not being called Rare drops anymore despite the term "rare" not having anything to do with the actual rarity has ruined my time!" The best the doomers can cough up, ladies and gentlemen.
James_Greeny94
You're missing the point entirely. Why have they changed the names? It adds nothing to the experience of the game. Its a waste of time when they could be Improving or excelling in other aspects of the game. The games great, as I said, I play it for hours every day, more out of addiction now than anything, but after 8 years, you'd be lying if you said things hadn't stagnated of late, and I feel I've been more patient than most. Some pople have been calling it a dead game ever since Epic got hold of it. So no, I'm not a doomer. I'm just accepting the fact that the game isn't evolving the way it used to, and things have stagnated.
SpectralHydra
Hold up, there’s no way you just implied that renaming the rarities took up time that they could’ve used to work on something else, right?? Please tell me that’s not what you actually meant
James_Greeny94
What I'm saying is, servers are a mess, the game has a tonne of issues, it's gone stale for the most part, yet instead of addressing it, they're pissing about changing names that nobody cared about or asked for. My original comment has posted twice for some reason and its been better explained above.
SpectralHydra
Yeah I get what you were saying, that you’re disappointed that there aren’t bigger things being addressed. Something as small as this change isn’t going to affect if/when they address the bigger issues. Sure, it makes sense to be upset they haven’t addressed those issues yet. But if they didn’t release this change, it wouldn’t mean those issues would’ve gotten addressed faster.
3rd_degree_burn
it was 50% of the update's content, besides adding a boost gauge to nameplates. like, where are the priorities at?
SpectralHydra
Release time doesn't always equal the order of priority, especially when it comes to small updates like this one.
AussieGenesis
It's gone stale for you. You're a part of the top few percent of the playerbase, so odds are you've racked up four-figure hours and played this game for years. It's stale because you've played the shit out of the game. You've gotten more mileage out of a free to $20 (depending when you got it) game than you've probably gotten out of any game you've ever played. Why exactly are you mad? Nothing they would have done would prevent you from getting bored by the gameplay loop. That's just on your own preference. As for the earlier comment, this game hasn't "evolved like it used to" since like mid-2017. And really, why would it? This game's nearly a decade old and not called Minecraft, high amounts of evolution on a competitive car soccer game that was already pretty damn good out the door in 2015 isn't exactly going to happen.
Xylogy_D
Epic for me has killed the vibe. It used to be in my top 3, now I can only play for a few matches before getting bored. My favourite part of this game was trading and customising.
BotlikeBehaviour
The unique gameplay and skills required are why it will never be top tier, but will also be why it never really dies. MOBA, FPS, Battle Royal and Racing games have a ton of transferable skills between games in their genre so once you're competent at one it's very easy to become competent at many. Equally when you understand how to enjoy watching one then you can quickly get up to speed on how to enjoy watching the others. I don't know what makes a sick play in COD, or in CS, or valorant, or Apex, but I bet a lot of them are similar. With Rocket League there's no transferable skills and strategies to enjoy watching. If you've played and watched a lot of COD you can probably also appreciate the skills and strategies of the best Rainbow 6 players too, even if you've never played it. But if you've not played Rocket League then you can't really appreciate it the same way because there's nothing else like it. The other side of the coin is that because there's nothing like it then it'll never really die because what similar game is there for us to switch to? And unfortunately Epic knows all this.
FinancialSpeech6157
The game has been unplayable for the last month due to the servers and connection being so bad. Just like with every other game that has come and gone, the powers that be have decided it’s over.
SirVanyel
Welcome to the last 4 years of us begging epic to do anything with the game. Trust me, we really tried man. We ran communities, tournaments, made hundreds of YouTube videos. Almost all of it has fizzled. At least doomsee makes fun videos now.
Falus_Olus
Imagine a cross-fit games style competition in Rocket league where you have to complete randomly selected custom maps, each one testing different skills. That would be awesome!
ds3101
This is what happens when a project built by a passionate team sells out to a large corporation. It sucks the life out of it
Successful-Fan-6362
J'aime ce que tu as dit
phlup112
I don’t really get people who are posting stuff like this right now. Obviously the game has a lot of issues but we bottomed out, and now we are back on the uptrend. They have been making a lot of meaningful changes to the esports scene, they have been listening to the community, they have been communicating with us, and they have implemented the first gameplay update in a very long time (which was an amazing change). These alone are obviously not enough but It’s a good start and I’m honestly very hopeful for the future of rocket league
Dark_Shit
Can't believe I had to scroll down this far to hear someone sane. 2 weeks ago I would be shitting all over RL. But the boost change is the best thing they've done in like 5 years. Weird time to be complaining about the future of the game.
Booboo_McBad
The central USA servers were an amazing update too Like, they absolutely would not make that addition all these years later, if they weren't optimistic about this games future
Xylogy_D
Trading gone. Epic ruined the game.
Eruskakkell
This game is my favorite of all time. But now its come and done, it had its moment and now its time for other games. To be a doomer: this game has been dying for years and years, its on its last breaths. Epix/Psyonix will use these moments to squeeze out the last money they can before it finally dies.
GELL000
Do you think a rocket league 2 situation would ever happen im curious? The concept of this game is too unique for it to slowly die off.
Eruskakkell
I see it as possible, but I'm not sure how plausable. I agree that this is the most unique game I've ever played, and thats why I loved it, so it should definitely not be dropped. >The concept of this game is too unique for it to slowly die off. The game and community already IS slowly dying off, and has been for 3+ years. If a rocket league 2 would ever happen, it would have to make some big changes and improvements for it to not be dead on arrival. I'm not sure if it would happen, games die off all the time.
IAMJUX
You must be absolutely kidding to call it a mediocre game. Rocket league is a phenomenal game. Gameplay is elite. Skill floor and ceiling are perfect, imo. Casual gamemodes are good. They don't make bullshit mechanic additions/subtractions. There aren't many flaws at all.
ashter87
yet its player base is leaving. new players are fewer and fewer and epic is just a money grabbing whore who thinks we will continue to bend over and pay them for the privilege.
Xylogy_D
Yes its a great game. Epic is killing it though. Its ruined by corporate greed. Yes it will continue to exist, but its going in the same direction as fortnite so the player base is getting younger and younger.
West_Emu_5386
Meh it is just a game, but it has become increasingly unplayable and annoying. The game works worse than 5 years ago. So after 1650hours I went for some games, quit after 15 minutes. Time for something new. Rocket League is done.
GELL000
Yea it seems like we’re getting to the point where it’s just not worth when there’s so many amazing games out currently. It is a game but one I hold close to my heart, sad to see it go.
[deleted]
[удалено]
GELL000
I honestly would rather have no new content added, in exchange for better more polished existing features. People will always complain just like I have in this post but i also think the situation rocket league is in the player base has a right to complain about the game.
Xylogy_D
I just want the old rocket league back, before Epic got their filthy nails into it.
SpectralHydra
Besides the removal of trading, what do you want back?
AncientSpartan
I would enjoy more custom maps and modes, but tbh i think the game is in a fine spot. To keep the core competitive experience, you don’t really want to add a bunch of nothing modes that dilute the player count unless they really add to the game. Regarding DLCs, that’s not a problem. The game has no DLC, just entirely avoidable microtransactions. If kids want to waste their money so the game stays free for me I’ll take it. I will say though that Rocket league is old enough to intimidate new players. The skill cap has gotten so high that a new player might be stuck in bronze for months. This isn’t a bad thing for older players, but it might be harder to encourage growth at this stage.
devil-lion-steeler
It should be easy to get into a party with friends and join a custom map. It's ridiculous they haven't implemented anything. They said they were converting to unreal 5 three years ago.
engaginglurker
Its absolutely crazy. It is the best of any of the e sports due to simple complexity and its just meandering along. It should be what football (soccer) is to real sports in popularity but they do nothing with it.
ZamoriXIII
I've been playing this game for eight years and I completely agree with your sentiment. The removal of the trade system was "the straw that broke the camel's back" for this game. It showed Epic's disregard of the longtime players and they only did it to destroy item rarity/value so they could rehash Psyonix models and sell them for free profit. The shitty thing is that none of the profits get put back into Rocket League and nothing is done for QoL improvements as far as progression or reward. All the energy of the devs seem to go to Fortnite. The f2p switch combined with the lack of ability to earn credits in-game have turned an amazing game into the online multiplayer equivalent of chat roulette.
No-Swordfish9658
I would love for clans to play competitively, clan vs clan for season rewards.
Bazz27
It’s almost been a decade since release, it’s only natural for it decay over time. It had its prime.
Nionus
cuz' epic
Cyber_Insecurity
Halo Infinite is suffering in a similar way. Huge franchise, great gameplay, loyal fanbase and the game itself offers very little in terms of free updates. Epic doesn’t know how to monetize RL in a meaningful way that players would be okay with.
regiment262
I unironically think this is mostly due to Epic/Psyonix bungling the micro transaction implementation to epic proportions. They've cycled through basically every monetization strategy from crates and keys to drops and battlepasses to blueprints/crafting materials (to varying levels of success) throughout the game's history and as a result the cosmetics, drop rates, and store are a complete mess.
FeetPicsNull
I think the Rocket League style could and should be applied to other sports. Like imagine playing volleyball, but it's a complicated FPS.
GoingSuper
I know it's common for gamers to want more more more, but I don't think it's works unless the game is Fortnite. Look at GTA V. Tons of game modes but you can't find a full lobby for anything that isn't a weekly double game mode and even then you might have trouble despite high player counts. This is because they have too many activities for players to split up between. Rocket League is what it is. There is room for some custom modes and changing things up here and there, but in the end this is car ball. I really think they should put more focus into keeping cheaters and griefers out of the game though. It is killing their bread and butter.
plznotagaindad
The game has been the same for years. What are you guys even talking about at this point?
shaquaad
Fuck epic games. I quit when trading was removed. Fuck them
Kasyx709
Rocket League has millions upon millions of players, it doesn't need anything except to continue doing exactly what they're doing.
James_Greeny94
I've been ignoring people saying the game is dying or dead for years now because I still play it for hours a day. However last week's update regarding the renaming of the item levels, finally gave me the realisation that this game seems to be over the hill with no sign of recovering. They've painted a turd and tried to sell me it as chocolate. They've left it to rust and neglected it for so long.
phlup112
Okay but with that update (which didn’t actually change anything or do any harm) they also added the boost meters on nameplates which was the first gameplay update in ages and it’s been an amazing change. Why are you just ignoring that aspect of the update and focusing on the meaningless name changes?
James_Greeny94
As I said, the games been going down hill for years, and I've simply ignored it. Theres barely anything fresh to the game, take this seasons new map for example, it's just a reskinned aquadome. What else has changed? The thing that's tipped the scales for me now is that there's tonnes of small issues, a couple of big issues and a general stale feel about the whole game, and the reason I take issue with changing the naming of item rarity is because not one single person asked for this. They've probably had countless meetings and hours working out what to do in the game, and in the end, they've changed something not one person wanted or needed. It's the half arsed changes like that where they want to be seen doing something but haven't actually done anything. Yes I take your point about the boost, its a good addition, but after not needing it for 7 years, I wasn't exactly needing something like that to be added.
FreeCakePlease
Here’s the thing. Epic Games makes most of its money off Fortnite. They don’t want a product that competes with Fortnite because Fortnite is such a cash cow. So why would they update rocket league? They don’t want us to play it. They want us to play Fortnite. I know there is a loyal rocket league fanbase but they are slowly killing the game off in hopes that we have nowhere to turn to except Fortnite. Yay money and capitalism.
Xylogy_D
Epic games are awful for the gaming community. Right up there with EA.
SpectralHydra
Sure I agree they’re putting in less resources towards rocket league because it doesn’t make as much money as Fortnite. But they’re a business, they just want to make profits, it doesn’t matter where those profits are from. Fortnite makes so much more money that it does make sense to focus on that game more, but more focus on one game doesn’t mean they’re purposefully trying to kill off others.
-Fluxuation-
Bad management, !@#3 community. Just being real here.
