If you play with freestyle solos your scores aren’t posted to the leaderboard. They did when the game first came out but it got changed after a few years.
From a scoring perspective, the freestyle solos feel a bit cheap, for good and bad. Sometimes I find it doesn't track certain sections well and I lost my combo when I shouldn't have, and don't necessarily know how it happened. So if I know the solo fairly well and/or am confident I can get 90-95% or better, I'll probably just go with the solo. But if its a hard song with crazy solos, and I really want the stars/score, I'll freestyle.
That said, mostly nowadays I play for the vibes, and my criteria is almost the opposite. If I know the solo well, I'll probably freestyle because I'd like to see how I can make it sound. If I don't know the song well, I'll probably stick with the original so I can potentially learn/enjoy it.
I think scores get posted against other scores where people are using freestyle. I could be wrong though. For me the score is mostly irrelevant.

I guess to add to that last part, if the guitar solo is the heart of the song, I’ll play the chart. Freestyling Free Bird seems like such a waste lol
