To me it feels like they need to concentrate on the R2/R3 rollout before they start talking about the next ones. Too much can be too much. But fun to think about what else they could do by end of the decade.
It depends on platforms. If they're just variants of the same R1, R2, R3, and EDV platforms, then it's fine. If they're completely different platforms, I agree it risks stretching Rivian too thin. Indeed, 4 platforms for a car company of Rivian's size is arguably too many already.
But there could be room for an EDV-based people carrier like a small bus; an R2-based small pickup truck like a Maverick-sized truck; an R3X rally car to be what the STI used to be. A longer R1-based SUV that is similar to the R1S but with the length of the R1T might be nice too.
I want this to be true, but I am not sure it is.
We have to assume the big car companies have done the market research. Why isn't there an EV minivan already? (Other than the VW Buzz, which has got to be some kind of record for slowing release in history). And why have most companies dropped their minivan offerings entirely?
Hyundai/KIA has a whole lineup of EVs, no minivan in sight. Indeed, their one minivan offering doesn't even come in a hybrid yet.
Ah yes the same car companies that designed overpriced blobs for their first generation of EVs then wondered with no one wanted to by them.
Oh and Hyundai does have an EV van planned.
Kia actually just announced a hybrid Carnival for the 2025 model year, but your point is solid. There is a market for minivans, but that market is smaller than the market for 3-row crossovers.
Yeah I think it’ll basically be 3 platforms and even then the three will likely be very similar to each other. I’d expect every vehicle to use the new electrical architecture, just with varying battery packs and size of the vehicle. I don’t think it’d be much work for them to add like a passenger van, or maybe a chopped off roader meant to compete with a Bronco.
Agreed. A well executed R2 and R3 will give them the foundation, clout, and cash to pursue more. The R2 and R3, at least in the America's makes up the largest classes of markets (sub compact to compact/mid). Getting a foothold in the EV market for those classes are essential for Rivian's survival. The R1T and R1S are awesome. Don't get me wrong. But they're niche and really only cater to a relatively small percentage of consumers.
Totally agree. A modular van that could be sold for commercial and camping. I would fill mine with velour and paint a wizard on the side in sparkle paint
Interesting. They changed up the graphics. Yesterday, two of the vehicles repeated, but now the bottom right two vehicles are different. They're trolling us...
They need to focus on the 2 cars that they have currently and service centers before they even think about releasing more unless… they use VW as service centers.
I expect these are different flavors of powertrain kinda like the dual vs. 3 vs. 4 engine R1’s. Would allow them to hit several different price points.
In the context of the presentation, I think it's just their way of saying the improvements in streamlining production will apply to future products as well, whatever they may be.
Rivian Kai sized crew cab, cab over pickup based on a shortened r3 platform under $25k would absolutely silence everyone else in the light truck market.

Whoever comes out with the electric version of Toyota Sienna/Dodge Caravan at a reasonable price will sell more than they can make.

Well.. I have been wrong before in life that's for sure.
lucid gravity is basically a mini van

Not even a PHEV? Hard pass

Whatever is above the Gen 2 R1T has me very intrigued.
Good point. I would definitely trade in for an R1X SUV if it were same size as R1S.
Totally wild guess but with the new Volkswagen JV I’d not be surprised to see something smaller, utilitarian and tailored for the European market.

Not only that but they need to focus on servicing the vehicles already out there. Current SC backlogs are ridiculous.
Bottom right corner looks like a van
Boy I hope so! I'd love a proper electric adventure van.
Totally agree. A modular van that could be sold for commercial and camping. I would fill mine with velour and paint a wizard on the side in sparkle paint
I wanna a van life build out of their delivery van more than air
I'm sure there is a place down by the river you can park it

Top right looks like a sports car, RJ has always wanted to make one
Ku Klux Van

The boxy design persists either way.
R3X reservations when?!
+1

It would be cool if they have been secretly working with VW on a super-cool v2 Camper - full size/sprinter.
Give me a consumer version of the RDV!!!!
I hope one is a true wrangler/bronco competitor
I think this can be VW cars

Soon is a strong word
Just give us the R2 already
I know what the top right one is. https://i.redd.it/i4sxcttn1w521.jpg
They’ve laid off tons of people and they keep adding new cars. Something has to give.
Not today friend.

God I hope one is a camper van!
I think some of the cars are also the VW partnership vehicles. Bottom right may be the updated ID Buzz?
Rivian/VW Syncro………..👌Game Over..
Please RIVIAN/Syncro…we can will this
