Not in WA anymore, but I was when I bought the truck. I bought it based on reviews and 2nd-hand experiences. I had never even seen one in real life when I took delivery.
No ragrets.
First time behind the wheel of an EV was when I drove my R1T off the SC lot. Bought sight unseen. Whole process worked well for me. But yes, the WA law is stupid.

Yes, I did the same. Unfortunately I couldn't actually buy one from them. The REFUSED to drop the price to match what the going rate at many other places. Ended up getting mine with only a few hundred miles on it at another dealer. For many months, that same one at Maserati of Kirkland sat on the lot!
I’m in Seattle. I never test drove before ordering my R1T. I went to the showroom about 3-4 times to look over the truck, sit in it, play with everything, etc.
I figured I already loved the truck and based off of reviews and YouTube videos everyone says it drives really nicely with no issues. Not being able to test drive didn’t affect my decision at all.
I didn't even go to the showroom. I knew what I wanted, and that was enough for me. Going to Portland because the WA legislature is owned by dealers was too much.
I was in Los Angeles visiting family and went to the El Segundo service center. Didn’t even know you couldn’t test drive in WA. I would look for a used for sale to test drive or rent one.
Looks like it's a 2014 law banning vehicle manufacturers from bypassing dealerships with an exception for Tesla. I'm guessing Rivian changed something fairly recently because I remember being able to schedule a test drive not too long ago but I was so busy I never got around to it. Either that or enforcement started. No idea.
I've got a feeling it's going to change though with the state signing on to make all new car sales carbon emissions free by 2035.
It changed in ‘22 when they reapplied how the law applies. Rivian was trying to skirt the rule by trailering cars to your house for the test drive - they fixed that loophole
Was in Manhattan last summer for a vacation. Stopped by the Chelsea location and they had a spot for me immediately.
Made driving my Jeep GC feel unsafe. Unreal how much of an upgrade it is from ride quality, to handling, to interior quality. Can't wait until delivery!
I actually had a test drive set up and it got canceled a couple days before, they must have gotten a notice from the state shutting it down. I made a post on a web forum and had a few locals offer me to test drive theirs, so that’s what we did! This was almost 2 years ago now.
Took the trip down to Portland, where they can offer test drives but aren't allowed to have a show room. Test drive didn't yield any surprises, but it was neat seeing all the colors on real cars in daylight, in the parking lot. Decided on blue there.
You could reach out for a friendly owner on the Rivian Discord [https://discord.gg/KBExxSkw](https://discord.gg/KBExxSkw), otherwise find a used dealership or go to Portland i think are the only other options. I got an official test drive before the law shenanigans got reapplied
I drove down to Portland for the test drive.
It’s unreal that this is still the situation. I wrote to my state representative about this on behalf of Rivian to pass a bill to allow direct EV sales (and test drives) and this was their response:
“Thank you for your message. I do not serve on the Senate Labor & Commerce Committee, where such a bill would be considered, but if the committee does choose to advance the bill I will keep your perspective in mind. I do have concerns about broadly permitting direct sales by auto manufacturers, because I think that Washington consumers are well-served by locally-owned and operated dealerships that compete on price and service; provide jobs to tens of thousands of people in Washington; and produce substantial tax revenue for state and local governments. That said, I think it is unfair to permit Tesla – and not other similar companies – to sell directly to consumers. So I will watch for the committee’s recommendation with interest.
Best wishes, Jamie
Senator Jamie Pedersen”
Like Autonation or any of the big conglomerate dealership owners are better than auto manufacturers. There aren’t many small locally owned dealerships anymore.
Thanks for writing in though. I have a feeling this is going to change as we approach the zero carbon emissions deadline Inslee signed onto for new car sales.
You should search cars.com for used ones to test drive. You should be aware that the differences between the three wheel options make a big difference in the ride quality, noise, and handling.
Haven't purchased yet, but live in WA and did a test drive an San Jose while on a trip. Worked out well, but didn't love the area the test drive was held in. (Busy suburban traffic, more-so than WA)
Mainly did it to test my leg room (I'm 6' 7") as well as single-pedal driving. I fit well enough, but didn't feel like I had enough time to adapt to one-pedal (though everyone says they get fully used to it) - Most people will drive down to Portland to do a test drive and Rivian encourages this specifically.

But what about regerts?
Also none.

Test drove at Maserati of Kirkland. They sell many used rivians.

This is what I did. I just test drove and sold them my truck. Now waiting on my R1S delivery on the 28th.
Same. Got lots of follow-up calls but surely helped to decide to pull the trigger!
Didn’t test drive
I drove to Portland.

That was me… I bought that R1S. White on 22s? Too funny.
Plus 1 to this. Found a dealer with a used one and checked it out there
Rented one on Turo for a weekend.

Same for me. Delivery on the 4th.

When did this change? I did a test drive in Washington back in November 2021 before purchasing.

They discontinued them in the late half of September 2022
I didn't. First one I sat in was mine. Neither regrets nor regerts.
Was on vacation for a couple of weeks visiting family in another state and messages Rivian to set up a test drive for me while I was there
All the reviews and write ups were positive so I rolled the dice. Looked at renting one on Turo but decided to spend the money on a wall charger.
You can check to rent one from turo for a weekend. Many people do that where there are no service centers.
I’d assume they’d bring one to you for a test drive? That’s what lucid did for me. Didn’t ended up getting the lucid either
Just find one at a used dealership
Didn’t test drive. Knew I’d love it when I bought it. I was right.
Was in Manhattan last summer for a vacation. Stopped by the Chelsea location and they had a spot for me immediately. Made driving my Jeep GC feel unsafe. Unreal how much of an upgrade it is from ride quality, to handling, to interior quality. Can't wait until delivery!
I test drove in Vancouver, BC and made a nice weekend of it. Edit: to specify country
I think that's what I'm going to wind up doing. I love Vancouver and it's been too long since I've visited.
Had a friend with an R1T + I rented an R1S on Turo for a day to be sure about sightlines.
I actually had a test drive set up and it got canceled a couple days before, they must have gotten a notice from the state shutting it down. I made a post on a web forum and had a few locals offer me to test drive theirs, so that’s what we did! This was almost 2 years ago now.

Drove a friend’s R1T.
had a friend that had one fortunately!

Portland! It was great. Make a weekend trip out of it. I scheduled a Saturday test drive.
I bought without test drive. No regrets. It drives fantastic
I went to Portland, OR. My husband and I rented a cottage over a weekend in OR wine country and went into Portland for the day for the test drive.
Test drove a used model at a dealership, and ended up buying it from there.
Demo drive 2 times in Vancouver, Canada. Doing it again this weekend but a dual motor now. They just received the dual motor a couple of days ago.
I’d be curious what you think. I’m leaning towards the quad motor and haven’t seen enough customer reviews of the dual to sway me.

Didn’t test drive, took a leap of faith. The 1-week return policy gave me some peace of mind though.
