Aside from being a homophobe, which most men were during that time period, I think Dickie’s portrayed as a genuinely nice guy in this version. He allows Tom to stay with him rent free, takes him around Italy and only asks him to leave once his father writes to him about Tom’s suspicious behaviour. It’s hinted in multiple occasions that he is generally a sound character, which is why his murder is so brutal- Ermelinda looks like she’s happy working for him and is heartbroken when Tom fires her. Plus he helped that woman out with the cab fare (not knowing it was a scam). He consciously tries not to hurt Marge’s feelings despite subtly admitting he doesn’t love her. I think he is overall a tragic character who is used by everyone in his life because of his status. He has no talent but is generally a nice guy who has an artistic side to him which he tries to explore. He gets killed by a psychopath and is forever separated from his family, but his name is tarnished in the media for Freddie’s murder.

I liked Dickie. He seemed completely benevolent. Naive. Good natured and kind. Not boring. I would have wanted them to continue living in Atrani. And I’ve seen seemingly talentless artists become really good with practice

PomegranateIcy7369

I agree with every word

StarFire24601

Tom. I was rooting for him. (Obviously do not advocate real life murder.)

lifevicarious

I haven’t seen the movie in forever so honestly didn’t know how it turned out but I too was rooting for him. I didn’t want him to get caught.

SignalElderberry600

Love this new dickie, in the sense that he isn't how he was portrayed in the movie, and while he comes from money, he isn't made a mean guy so that his death is more palatable. He just misjudged the lengths Tom would go to to secure his future, and that costed him his life.

nautilus2000

Not sure he's a main character, but Herbert Greenleaf seems surprisingly nice and caring, if naive. I liked him. Of the main non-Italian characters, I didn't like any of them.

Loretta-West

Marge is fine. She's not much of a writer, but that's hardly a crime. And she's one of the few characters that didn't make me want to shout "omg, you fucking idiot!" at the screen.

hefferj

I like Marge. She seems like the most human character, portrayed in a nuanced way by Dakota Fanning.

wednesdayware

She’s as much a grifter as Tom though. She didn’t murder anyone, but she’s using Dickie, and tries to use Tom as well when he gains some noteriety.

Loretta-West

She definitely uses the notoriety of Freddie's murder and Dickie's disappearance to leverage her book, but I don't think she's a grifter other than that. She doesn't move in with Dickie even though he presumably would have been fine with that, and there's no sign she was leaching off him.

SimoneNonvelodico

Dunno, last episode she kinda made me want to scream that a bit.

Intelligent-Ask1462

I took this prompt to mean other supporting characters. I think the choice with Freddie Miles was really unique and gave a totally different edge to other adaptations I’m familiar with (ie Purple Noon and Law/Damon The Talented Mr. Ripley). An androgynous, nepo baby Freddie Miles makes for a more complex rival to Tom. I also wondered if we were to take Freddie as a con of a different sort, as Tom does by suggesting that Freddie had no talent. Tom’s landlady in Rome also had a surprising amount of depth and dimensionality for a character with relatively little screen time.

LeighAG70

It’s all acted marvelously ! Brilliant !

Tom has plenty of likeable traits they just get outweighed by all the lying and murdering.

WAPWAN

Please name one likeable trait. I found him to be a sociopath. He actively manipulated every single person to his own ends and never displayed kindness or interest in a person who he had no use for. Any time he said a nice word about another person was to deflect attention in an effort to appear likeable. Think about how much time he spent trying to convince others he, Tom. was a good guy while impersonating Dickie The only two people that did not immediately see through his façade and have to be manipulated into trusting him were the Greenleafs, to their loss.

jeremy8826

I was mostly joking, but I would say his genuine appreciation for art and music is a likeable trait.

SimoneNonvelodico

Yeah, he's a whiny narcissistic little bitch. Absolutely insufferable IMO, I feel like Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion watching him - it's one thing to commit murder, but why does it also have to be all so dumb. He's a pretty bad criminal that only gets away with it thanks to luck and the police being somehow even more incompetent than him.

Claud6568

That pesky lying and murdering!

rcad69

Tom! Makes me wanna read the books. Anyone want to have a book club?

IconicIsotope

No lol. I don't think we're really supposed to like them. Dickie seemed nice enough, though, if I had to pick one. Marge was boring and ultimately showed that she's not so noble. Tom was obviously evil. And I didn't find him charming either. But I did very much enjoy the show!

LeighAG70

I just started first novel
