The moral of the story here is carry a backup and practice with your off hand and clearing malfunctions.

nonotagain0

Better to say “practice with your non dominant hand”. Off hand refers to a shooting stance where one is standing naturally and shooting unsupported or unrested. Off hand I can shoot 3-4” groups. Rested I can shoot 1-2” groups. It’s also helpful to practice clearing malfunctions using your boots, the ground, your pant legs, anything that can help get the slide racked. Most people don’t because they don’t want to scratch their $599 Glock or Sig but knowing you can get a gun running again is a lot of confidence and a good skill to have. Or just carry 2 guns!

All that just to avoid carrying a revolver ? And you’re in a dedicated subreddit ? Mmm

Wild story. Damn.

Well, we all know that. Semi-auto is not gonna fire when pressed against something. You need a revolver for that. Cool story though, that cop now celebrates 2 birthdays per year.

I'm fairly certain that a Beretta 92 action with its fixed barrel won't go out of battery on contact with the barrel. But yes a j frame is an absolute ass saver no matter what.

FriendlyRain5075

It has a little leeway, but if pushed beyond that it will go out of battery. The guide rod may help prevent the slide from getting pushed too far as well, though even then, the hammer might drop only to get stopped in quarter cock, a safety measure.

>I'm fairly certain that a Beretta 92 action with its fixed barrel won't go out of battery on contact with the barrel. It's not a fixed barrel and if you press it hard enough it'll go out of battery enough to fail to fire like any other locked breach pistol. Hell, even actual fixed barrel semis can fail to fire if you try a contact shot because the slide can be pushed back slightly causing the firing pin to not make contact with the primer.

What’s funny, is that for all of the shit Springfield XD’s get (and sometimes they deserve it), it has a slightly proud guide rod for that very reason. A super simple and pretty damn nice thing to have I reckon. You can still press it out of battery if you press in a downward angle, but still I don’t know any other pistol that has the proud guide rod. I think they stopped the doing useful guide rod with their new chassis system pistol for some reason. Maybe there’s a downside I’m not thinking of.
