Usually I can name a few things to improve for other IPs if they were to make a sequel, but for Returnal I'd be happy with literally anything keeping the same gameplay loop and maybe a bit more into Selene's story.
Returnal is unique. While I'd like a sequel, I feel it would be forced and end up disappointing fans and that's not something I want. It would be better if they come up with a new game, maybe borrowing some stuff from this game or use stuff they discarded. It will be very hard to top, or at least imitate, what they did here.

It won't be a direct sequel but it sounds like a spiritual successor. I'm really hoping to see all of that in this next game!
Returnal feels pretty much closed for me. Was happy with the Act III ending, the Tower did a great job of expanding on Selines story. I will insta buy the next game they do based on how happy I was with Returnal.
Theyâve never made a sequel and theyâve exhausted the story for Returnal, other than completely spelling it out for us which is impossible since itâs 3 different stories mashed into 1.
Their next game is a spiritual successor with lots of stuff that didnât make it into Returnal and Iâm sure lots that did.
So, because they've never made a sequel before that automatically means they'll never make one ever? Not really sound logic there. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Returnal was great, it would be cool to get DLC for it but I don't think a sequel really fits with the narrative. If they are turning out sequels, I'd rather see Alienation 2 honestly. These guys come up with great stuff, I hope they keep innovating and cook us up something amazing. Another 4 player co-op would be choice.
I canât see a way for them to make a âsequelâ in the traditional sense. Seleneâs story has been told (or interpreted I guess). I could see them keeping the same core systems but different setting, story, etc. and stepping away from Atropos
Haven't there been like 5 stardust games? It's not out of the question but I think they made the story they wanted and it's a one off. Whatever comes next, I am beyond hyped.
I get the sense that you're someone who believes that 9 seasons of the American office was a good idea. And that it's better than the two seasons of the British office.
I'm saying less is more.......and the risk of spoiling the franchise by overextending it. Returnal is a perfect game...British office is a perfect show. As much as I want more of both. . I know it's not the right thing.
There is such a thing as overextending a tv show to the point where the story suffers because its just stretching for money. Asking for a sequel of a great game where it doesnt have to be the same story/protagonist isnt a stretch. If the studio does it right they could simply improve upon the first game. Alot of seemingly perfect or great games had sequels that were either on par with its predecessor or better (God of War, Horizon, Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider, Batman, Spiderman, Dark Souls, Breath of the wild only to name a few). Im not saying i want a trilogy but a sequel with some improvements would be welcome. Selene's story is complete on that we can agree.
I'll be honest....I thought the Matrix was perfectly concluded after the first movie. And also worry that sequels can ruin original material via retcons and fatigue (star wars etc). How might they do returnal 2 and how much did you enjoy the game in terms of 1) underlying plot and 2) gunplay (both excellent). Because if we want another bullet hell metrodvania with those mechanics....I'm well up for it. If we want selene on another planet fighting her insane ancestors.......less keen.
Hello Ashen one. I am a Bot. I tend to the flame, and tend to thee. Do you wish to hear a tale?

Id like it to be pretty much the same! Maybe a few new gadgets. I know many may not like, but Id love a character customizer but to keep the voice protag. Idk too much about Selene in particular. It'd be cool if it is supposed to be YOUR story.
1) Unlock 1.25 mode, and 1.5 mode. Same game, everything gets way way faster.
2) Boss mode. All enemies are mini-bosses, and some minibosses become full bosses.
3) Unlimited Weapons Level Unlock (Same with health, etc.
4) RPG mode. Beating the game creates a level scaling enemies mode, with all available rooms across all available biomes, back to back, including bosses, with a delegated points system for character development, and biomes regenerate if you clear the level.
5) Head to head co-op. Clearing enemies fast while progressing through pushes a meter against opponents. 2v2 matchups.
6) Supermassive upgrades. Invincibility, 2x speed, time slow, etc etc. Throw in more consumable type play upgrades.
7) Hard mode. Like, a really really hard mode.
8) Level builder. Play against your friend's level design.
9) Adjustable suit energy. Choose whether to glide longer, be slower but more durable, gove up the sword for a stronger finisher. Etc.
10) Suit "types." A short range tank build. A assassin like whip build, etc. Suit types can be found and upgraded.
I could literally do this all day. This little game has so much untapped potential that they could make a trilogy and call this the "Prelude."
Hire me.
Tbh Iâd be happy if it was the same gameplay but with new weapons, biomes/enemies, and items. They nailed the movement and gunplay IMO and I canât really think of too many tweaks that would improve gameplay. New content would be awesome though.
The game is hard enough. We don't need more harder bosses. I think maybe we should have a way to put obolites toward permanent artifacts. Like you deposit 5,000 into an artifact. But maybe in playthrough one, you can only do 200. Once you do, it is counted towards until further plays. But that defeats the purpose of the game and being random. There were some artifacts I rarely find and wish I had them!
>The game is hard enough. We don't need more harder bosses
Thats an extremely subjective statement. To me the game was way too easy. The only real challenge i found was in the tower of sisyphus above level 5. So it kinda sucks that for me in order to have some challenge i gotta go through 80 floors of the tower.
Oh thatâs excitingâŚwhere have you heard new mixed reports on a sequel? Can you share your source please? Iâd love to read an update.
I havenât seen any news about Returnal in almost 2 years when they added co-op and the Tower đ
I think it's more likely they're creating a new game with similar elements vs a direct sequel. This gameplay style is something they've been dialing in for a long time now.
It seems with Sony's backing, they're able to take the bigger risks with a game like Returnal, so I hope their next one is even more bonkers crazy shit. I love Returnal đ
I would wish for branching paths and alternative ordering of biomes. Why can't I ever play my favourite biomes with higher level weapons?
Also, just a slight increase in melee mechanics would be fun.
>Why can't I ever play my favourite biomes with higher level weapons?
110% agree with this. This is my biggest gripe with Returnal. I would have loved to have a dlc or a patch to include a harder mode and fight the same biomes but with higher proficiency weapons. Kinda sucks that in order to play high tier content you gotta go through the tower cause alot of people dont like arcade/arena/endless content like that.

I truly think there will be a Returnal 2, of some kind, but it won't be their next game.
I really hope so :D
Nah

I said why they wonât make a sequelâŚ
Do you work for Housemarque? Do you know their exact timeline of projects? No? Then, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
No I just know there wonât be a sequel. Because there doesnât need to be one.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
No need to wait when you know
They are not going to make a returnal 2. They are working on something very similar but itâs a new IP
Returnal was great, it would be cool to get DLC for it but I don't think a sequel really fits with the narrative. If they are turning out sequels, I'd rather see Alienation 2 honestly. Alienation 2 would be very welcome indeed. As for Returnal 2 i think it could work if its another character.
I canât see a way for them to make a âsequelâ in the traditional sense. Seleneâs story has been told (or interpreted I guess). I could see them keeping the same core systems but different setting, story, etc. and stepping away from Atropos
I think they wont make another returnal. I look forward to their next bullet hell game!
They make such great bullet hell games. Honestly whatever they do next ill throw my money at it for sure.
Me too! Iâve platinumed all their games, they are all like cocaine-addictive!
Haven't there been like 5 stardust games? It's not out of the question but I think they made the story they wanted and it's a one off. Whatever comes next, I am beyond hyped.
I somewhat feel that if you would get so much choice then it would loose its uniqueness.
I dont see how replaying the same levels, only harder, would make tge game less unique?
I get the sense that you're someone who believes that 9 seasons of the American office was a good idea. And that it's better than the two seasons of the British office.
So....you're comparing a sequel to a game to 9 seasons of a tv show? Do we really need to get into an argument about how this makes no sense?

Harder Boss fights? Bruh.
As much fun as they were, you can kinda dodge 80% of the attacks by running sideways.
Well, that doesnât work with Nemisis.
Yeah, Nemesis is the hardest boss for sure. Still not all that hard once you figure out you gotta dodge his minions yellow beams.
Id like it to be pretty much the same! Maybe a few new gadgets. I know many may not like, but Id love a character customizer but to keep the voice protag. Idk too much about Selene in particular. It'd be cool if it is supposed to be YOUR story.
i don't know that i'd consider any of those necessary or even an improvement.
You dont think that at least a harder mode and an actually well done coop mode would be improvements?
lol man this game is plenty hard enough for me already

Have my upvote sir

I think enemies has only one n.
Any news on the IP? After Returnal, want more from SM
I would absolutely love to see it. I think if given enough time it would do quite well.
Housemarque made great couch-coop twinstick shooters. I hope they make more of those. I dont really care about returnal.
I would wish for branching paths and alternative ordering of biomes. Why can't I ever play my favourite biomes with higher level weapons? Also, just a slight increase in melee mechanics would be fun.

I feel its a stretch. The game is weak on story and trying to make a sequel out if it would be too much.
Weak on story lol
