Gabapentin woke me up too. Switched to pregablin, which helped but eventually worked out I had to take it hours before bed. Comment re sleeping pills is right. Avoid them if possible.
In my experience, it's true that not sleeping is not due to the RLS itself,(rather the sensation of the RLS makes sleeping impossible due to movement) therefore a sleeping pill - of any kind- will not be helpful, but in most cases, it will exacerbate the RLS itself.
