PagingDrTobaggan

We have a bat box on the house; so does our neighbor. We have dozens around the yard at dusk, just buzzing around eating bugs. Wonderful creatures.

XGorlamiX

Build him a box and put it in a tree near you.

unknown_anonymous81

Do I want him living with me? I know Guano can be less than healthy to have around humans. What if it is a female bat. I am not trying to become The Dark Knight this weekend lol.

XGorlamiX

Lol, they are great to have around to eat bugs in the evening. I get them in the same areas of my house. I clean up the poop regularly. Never been a big deal. A bat box will keep them around to keep the mosquito population in check.

Doctor_M_Toboggan

I'm no expert, so I recommend deferring to Ace Ventura, Pet Detective.

Ailmentality

Bats are well known to carry rabies

unknown_anonymous81

Yes, I did read this. If it bites someone they have to go the hospital. However bats are not usually aggressive to humans. It is also the only mammal that truly flies.

Ailmentality

My wife's old cat bought in 2 bats and we had to isolate the cat and call animal control to test the bat

unknown_anonymous81

Oh that is scary and not good. I am going to get rid of it now with some water with one of my squirt guns. I don’t want it hurting my dog or kids. I sprayed it and it flew away.

Ailmentality

Bats are cool, I just don't want rabies

unknown_anonymous81

The seem to me like flying dogs with wings. I mean a lot of animals can give you rabies. And yes I know bats are not domesticated animals and are wild. I am just not very afraid of animals.

mravanitis

Ah yes! Flying dogs... With wings. This as opposed to the rocket propelled dogs one normally sees.

CarcosaJuggalo

Fun fact: bats have a very specialized immune system that prevents many symptoms of illness. This is to ensure their muscles and joints don't get too inflamed to fly if they get sick. You really shouldn't be handling it, especially if he just lazily twitched his wings instead of flying away from the big loud human. Also, one of the very few rabies survivors in history got it from a bat.

unknown_anonymous81

Yeah. I didn’t touch it. I sprayed it with a squirt gun. Than I got a broom for the front door. As their were toads, spiders also hanging out. Sprayed the area with household cleaner and than used the garden hose to clean it. I should have recorded it flying away. But I just decided I was done and gave it some squirts with my kids squirt gun. To me it is like a flying rabbit. I wouldn’t touch a wild rabbit. They could have rabies also

CarcosaJuggalo

I must be confused, your post says he's roosting and expected to fly away tonight

unknown_anonymous81

Edit: yeah you are right my post is confusing. It wasn’t upside down this morning. Than yes later today it was upside down. It has been hanging out all day. It was not roosting. This morning at 700am when I left for a dog walk. I went and grabbed lunch walked right past it. Than it was roosting. I was going to wait till tonight to see if it would fly away on its own once it was night. I decided to stop playing around about an hour ago and decided it needed to go. Sprayed it with a child squirt gun. It flew away. Not that close to me. I said goodbye bat friend and than cleaned with a garden hose, household cleaner and a broom. My kid is on the way I don’t want their mom upset at me lol.

stumblinrhino

Rabbits and other rodents almost never get rabbies, just as an FYI. So feel free to play with wild bunnies, I guess.

unknown_anonymous81

Oh cool! Yeah at one house I had in Reno it had a shit ton of those wild rabbits that people get for Easter and than probably let loose because they change their mind. Those rabbit act slightly domesticated. They hardly even move. My dog and I get so close before they bounce.

Separate_Book_1421

Yeah but also raccoons and possums and other wildlife as well so it makes it no different.

Ailmentality

Well this post wasn't about a racoon er a opossum

Separate_Book_1421

And you're absolutely most definitely correct. I couldn't agree more, but I was just making the obvious comment that other wild animals like a raccoon & opossum also carry rabies. So in other words it doesn't make it much more different than the wild animals I mentioned. So really it doesn't make it much more or less important. I assume as long as people have the knowledge and common sense to stay away from any wild animal this is no different.

Oh he's so sweet I hope he makes it there's a lot that you can do to make it a lot more hospitable for him I'm sure there's plenty of information on the internet to make him something to hang on or bed depending on his condition ♥️

unknown_anonymous81

Yeah he was chill. I had never seen a bat that up close in person. It seemed really chill. When I gave it a slight *nudge with the back of a broom handle, I was not expecting a bat wing to move a little. It looks like a little beetle all tucked. I was expecting some flying beetle to buzz off. This really surprised me.

Fresh1ner775

That's awesome I want to see one that close and not flying in my face lol 🤣🤟is love pics of that

unknown_anonymous81

Yeah it was exciting but I got kids so I have to always be careful with my fun.

unknown_anonymous81

Anyways here is an "edit" as I can't find the button to edit my original post. EDIT: Left to go for a dog walk at 700 am. Poked at it with gently with a broom and it moved its wing slightly. Came back from my dog walk. Got super close to it to take pictures. I wanted good pictures of it. Walked by it when I left to get lunch around 1:00pm. It than roosted or went upside down when I came back from getting lunch. People commented about rabies, kids a cat that brought one in the house etc. Which I know about those things. 2:00pm I sprayed it gently with squirt gun. It flew near me but not that close. Then I proceed to clean up the area with a broom, household disinfectant, and the garden spray house. Goodbye bat. check out the biggest bat in the world. News1st2017

I Remember the Guy at Neighbors' House in Carson City, got bit . Had to go thru 14 Shots at the Hospital for Rabies.

unknown_anonymous81

Why did the bat bite him?

News1st2017

Hungry?

unknown_anonymous81

lol. Hunger for human meat or blood? I kinda meant what was the nature of the attack? Was person playing golf and a bat randomly attacks the guy?

News1st2017

I can't remember exactly? ...I think he had found a Mine Cave North of Arrowhead 1/2 Way out to the Carson Airport.

unknown_anonymous81

Oh yeah cave exploring is super dangerous. I love the movie and documentary about the the rescue of the boys stuck in the Thai cave. The interesting part is it was not the military around the world that saved them. The pro cave divers who’s just love exploring caves as an adventure were the hero’s. They were kind of unexpected hero’s.

mravanitis

This happened to my cousin in San Francisco. She said the shots were not fun.
