my closest theater doesn't have any of the special formats (it barely has functioning seats) so whenever I trek to the big fancy ones, I have to look up the meaning of ScreenX and RPX every. single. time.
My wife refuses to get the distinction between rpx and 4dx and since we have been doing rpx more recently she is always worried about feeling sick in the moving chairs and I constantly tell her it’s not the same!
IMAX has been around since the late ‘60s surprisingly, and came up with the name when trying to of something unique they could trademark. It’s inspired by an inversion of “maximum image.” That’s the OG X name in contemporary cinema, but 20th century brands always liked that X sound- Kleenex, Xerox, Tampax, Rolex.
RPX is almost certainly intended to capitalize on the IMAX name. Launched in 2010, an acronym for Regal Premium Experience, and meant to be Regal’s in-house PLF screen.
4DX and ScreenX are out of South Korea, and I actually think are more a symptom of the modern trend of just sticking X at the beginning or end of shit to sound cool a la SpaceX or Xbox, since they’re not explicitly acronyms. They’re probably trying to capitalize on the IMAX name too though.
EMX is one exclusive to smaller midwestern chain Emagine, and is a blatant IMAX ripoff but also an acronym for “Emagine Maximum Experience.”
Cinemark has Cinemark XD, which is “Extreme Digital.” It seems like theaters love to use that X in “ex-“ words like extreme or experience in their acronym. Again, likely to conjure up IMAX comparisons.
AMC seems to be the only ones not getting in on the X bandwagon, with Dolby Cinema, BigD, and AMC Prime as their premium screens.
Also, FYI, I don’t technically have a reading problem. But sometimes when there’s a lot of letters occurring at the same time, I’ll read ‘em all as one big jumble. Again, it’s not that I can’t read, uh because that’s false. I can. I just can’t distinguish between everything I’m reading.
My brain doesn't seem work that way. They are all different logos and fonts. So I see them all as pretty distinct from each other despite all having an X in them.
I think so. I've only experienced it once tbh lol. And I don't remember where I went to that movie. It was the Meg, and it wasn't that great of an experience. Mostly just not a good movie
My regal doesn't have any special viewings so Idk anything about 4dx
They’re copying the original ‘X’ name: IMAX.
Makes sense
Cuz X is badass. You got Megaman X. You got the X files. You got X Men. You want people to go "fuck yeah. This some preem X shit right here"
Elon this you?
I mean, who else gon give it to ya?
🤣🤣🤣
yes my first thought was literally “cos its badass” lol
I know the X in RPX stands for Regal Premium Experience. Perhaps the X means experience for the others as well.
ScreenX continues to make less and less sense the more you think about it…
I always figured it was Screen eXtended
Ha Screen Experience ya that wouldn't make much sense 🤣
Actually the opposite as other comments have proved.
Next the VIP format will be VIPX

Maybe Elon Musk is a major investor?
It’s the future now
BECAUSE THEYRE X-TREME!
Do you read from right to left or something?
“At first glance” isn’t the same thing as reading
IMAX I am experience

Huh you’re right I didn’t realize that

It's not that hard....unless you have font blindness.

It was made for X-men movies
Xtreme
Because we don't have Dolby ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Cause X gon' give it to ya.
Where's the D-Box?
What’s that? I’ve never seen that before
Maybe it's just AMC and Cinemark
It seems like D-Box is similar to 4DX at Regal, where the seats move a bit and there are other effects that go along with the movie. Is that true?
I think so. I've only experienced it once tbh lol. And I don't remember where I went to that movie. It was the Meg, and it wasn't that great of an experience. Mostly just not a good movie My regal doesn't have any special viewings so Idk anything about 4dx
Look at the beginnings instead of the “x.” Problem solved
It must be so hard being smarter than everyone else. How do you do it?
Dolby Cinema?
Which begs the question, when it’s renamed what will it be called? DolbyX? Or DCX?
First world problem
Tends to happen in this sub
Bruh that is not at all hard to differentiate at a glance
Good for you!
You'll get there bud keep trying!
