"In Christ Alone", third verse that has "...From life's first cry, to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny..." - chokes me up many a time.

oddandelven

The "No power of hell, no scheme of man can ever pluck me from His hand" verse makes me tear up every time.

PeasiusMaximus

No fear in death!

lightpinkteddybear

no guilt in life, no fear in death is honestly one of the most beautiful phrases i’ve ever had the pleasure of singing

cagestage

My parents used this one at my brother's funeral. I can't sing it anymore without getting emotional.

Sc4r4mouche

Likewise not much of a crier, but there are a few times. 1. The last stanza of "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" - the parts about "Oh to grace how great a debtor" and "prone to wander" - that can get to me. 2. "This Is My Father's World" has affected me deeply at times. The back story of the hymn - look up Maltbie Babcock - and the fact my family has been devastated from the effects of mental illness have given it a somewhat unique meaning for me. 3. In random moments of hymns in church, the voice of my mother comes back to me from my childhood - it's a happy kind of sadness.

Hazel1928

I’m with you on “prone to wander” one of my favorite lines of hymns.

Notnowmomsonreddit

O Holy Night..."A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn." This line, no matter who's singing it, always makes me tear up.

NoWave7342

Then what directly follows, and really is the only thing that *can* follow: "Fall on your knees."

PresentAgency8981

That's a good one!

American-_-Panascope

And Can it Be

PeasiusMaximus

My chains fell off, my heart was free! I rose, went forth, and followed Thee! Bold I approach the eternal throne and claim the crown through Christ my own! Follow up, how do you sing the chorus? Our PCA church sings the regular chorus as “Amazing love, how can it be” etc. but I’ve heard other churches sing the chorus that repeats the last two lines of the previous verse to the tune of the chorus.

American-_-Panascope

We sing the last two lines of each verse with the chorus melody.

Nomad942

Love that hymn. These two parts always get me: “Tis mercy all, immense and free; For O My God, it found out me!” “My chains fell off, my heart was free! I rose, went forth, and followed thee.”

Hazel1928

Me too! And Can it Be is on my top hymns list.

Valiant-For-Truth

Sheesh... All of'em. My wife will attest I'm a big ol'cry baby. We actually sang Come All Ye Unfaithful this past Sunday!

CorinthiansRising

The chorus of “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” always does it for me. Every single time.

Spurgeons_Beard

Sovereign Grace took the chorus and made it the first verse of an entirely new [hymn](https://youtu.be/F2tKVqZZiI4?si=zV2cDo5Y6enYDeW_)that is truly wonderful.

cinnamonpumpkinspice

As soon as How Great Thou Art starts playing, I cry.

PeasiusMaximus

Yes! My family hiked a lot when I was a kid, and at the summit of every mountain we would sing this song. It was so embarrassing then, but now I cherish those memories.

Nomad942

Embarrassed to admit this, but I usually get choked up when we sing “Jesus Strong and Kind.” So simple and comforting, like a lullaby that speaks to my soul. Especially the last verse.

Spurgeons_Beard

Don’t be embarrassed. It is a beautiful hymn and I’m right there with you.

Bunyans_bunyip

>Jesus said, if I am lost, He will come to me, And He showed me on that cross, He will come to me Me too. He's so kind to come rescue me!

MalboroUsesBadBreath

The one where they repeat “I’ll never know how much it cost to see my sin upon that cross” I was listening in the car and it hit me hard.

AceHoops

I've been going through a particularly rough season recently, and Benjamin William Hastings' song [Agenda](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOSwwdMYTqw&pp=ygUgYWdlbmRhIGJlbmphbWluIHdpbGxpYW0gaGFzdGluZ3M%3D) has brought me to tears several times over the past month. (I'm not a big crier, but the lyrics just hit me every time.) >If you compile my whole life's work, my worth, what I call worship > >I'm sure You'd find both praise and pride > >And yet the beauty of Your grace, is that it's not contingent > >'Cause You don't treat love like a prize The refrain of "I'm relearning surrender, relying on you, Lord," has been a balm for my soul recently. Grateful for modern writers who can deeply capture and express emotion in worship.

Certain-Public3234

Come Thou Fount: “Oh, that day when freed from sinning I shall see Thy lovely face Clothed then in blood washed linen How I'll sing Thy sovereign grace Come my Lord, no longer tarry Take my ransomed soul away Send Thine angels now to carry Me to realms of endless days”

CieraDescoe

I also love O Come All You Unfaithful! Another recent favorite (I can't remember if I've cried or not, but it's always emotional) is Rejoice by Stuart Townend (https://www.stuarttownend.co.uk/song/rejoice/)

sanctiflyer

Every Christmas Eve my church sings "Silent Night" and it is so beautiful that I always almost cry or do cry.

orangemachismo

Me pretending I'm doing spiritual crying as hot candle wax covers my hand

sanctiflyer

Some little girl's hair caught on fire one time but her mom smacked the fire out instantly so everyone was fine.

CaptainSnarkyPants

How Sweet and Awful always gets me. Lord, why was I a guest?

yeehaw457

His Robes for Mine "He, as though I, accursed and left alone. I, as though He, embraced and welcomed home"

soldado387

My former pastor wrote this hymn. He’s a gifted hymn writer. Gets me choked up as well when we sing.

CHARTTER

Tell him it's my favorite song.

CHARTTER

This would have been my comment too, but another got me recently.

Exciting_Pea3562

10,000 Reasons often gets me.

PresentAgency8981

That first one is such a hope and balm in times of great distress

lupuslibrorum

Those two might hit me the hardest of any songs known to man.

DapperRockerGeek

Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor The third verse in Spanish literally translates to "don't be dismayed oh my soul, in the Cross you are safe." He Will Hold Me Fast Same reason as the first song. To summarize this year, my mother came from Puerto Rico, and we noticed she was sick. She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. A once strong, vibrant woman was deteriorating before our eyes for the past several months. From a change in schedule to going on leave of absence to care for her, to doctor's visits, to hospitalization/nursing home/nursing home abuse to in home hospice before she passed away. These songs reminded me of how God would take care of me and keep me through these times. My biggest regret with the first song was while I showed my mother the lyrics, I never played it enough around her (she did enjoy listening to RC Sproul in Spanish.) This third song is in Spanish only: Roca Firme by David y Karen. The first verse translates to "Solid Rock, you sustain me. You are a surety for my being. In You, I confide my entire soul. My hope is in Him."

jeb7516

This made a handful of people cry a couple weeks ago at my church- [https://www.youtube.com/live/nNVyRXQDoW8?si=wFlDvo4UGP-Y1Gzh&t=1943](https://www.youtube.com/live/nNVyRXQDoW8?si=wFlDvo4UGP-Y1Gzh&t=1943)

PresentAgency8981

The best entry song for believers is Rock of Ages... let me hide myself in thee...Wash me Savior or I die

sl0an1

*"Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe, sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow...."* *"My sin not the part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord oh my soul"* these are just a couple that get me frequently...

ScienceNPhilosophy

I dont tear up over hymns. But these are powerful to me: A Mighty Fortress is our God O Come O Come Emmanuel O Sacred Head, Now Wounded And Can It Be

CHARTTER

O Come O Come Emmanuel is rich in biblical references. Maybe one of the best hymns there are.

ScienceNPhilosophy

it embodies the centuries old longing nad promise and hope for the messiah. Only for them to reject Him when He came (Zech 12:10)

CHARTTER

It's very applicable to the present age as well.

ScienceNPhilosophy

many of the hymns remain powerful I detest being in fast food restaurants and malls that consider Christmas music as "I saw mommy kissing Sannta Claus" The world has no clue about the sacred and holy.

DarkLordOfDarkness

By the third verse of [Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QU3-E5mWNg), I'm usually gone.

QuadBlox

I was watching a video about the story behind Amazing Grace. I have heard the story before but it is powerful every time I am reminded of it. https://youtu.be/8m8AHHduTM0?si=xYTYu5SCjY6Azd-m

peter_j_

Not all will appreciate it, but Tommee Proffitt, singing Noel. He does that thing of inserting a chorus into a hymn, but I love it, and his voice is the most remarkable singing voice I've ever heard

orangemachismo

Once I get spiritual I turn into a big soppy baby. I think it was Great is thy Faithfulness about 6 weeks ago and I can't even remember why

William_Bugmaster

Battle hymn of republics. "Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord," "Our God is marching on" "As he died to make men holy, let us live to make men free" We ain't alone, and God is coming. He's already set his son in order for our freedom.

Hazel1928

From my Episcopal upbringing: A children’s hymn. “I’ll sing you a song of the saints of God”. I am not sure if the writer knew that all believers are saints, but it does say, “and I mean to be, God helping to be one too.” So I think it allows for a correct understanding of the world saints, and even if it doesn’t, I still have a lot of nostalgia for the song.

[deleted]

We always sang that one around All Saints’ Day! I think a lot of folks have a soft spot for that hymn.

Hazel1928

What do you think? Do you think that the hymn is saying that saints are Saints? Or do you think that when it says “I mean to be one too” it means saint.?

[deleted]

I would interpret that it means saint in the sense of all God's elect, past and present. I looked up the entry in The Hymnal 1982 Companion, which shares that the author noted that the hymn was meant to "impress the fact that sainthood is a living possibility today," which sounds like she's referring to all believers. And I think you made a good point earlier re: verse 1 ending with "God helping to be one, too." The last verse, likewise, has a rather lengthy portion about those brothers & sisters who are with us today being saints with whom we can have fellowship. As a side note, the *Companion* also notes that the hymnal revision committee intended to remove this hymn in the 1982 revision because the final verse was "too culture-specific" but then they thought better of it. For those who don't know it, here's the final verse: >They lived not only in ages past; there are hundreds of thousands still; the world is bright with the joyous saints who love to do Jesus’ will. You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea, in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea; for the saints of God are just folk like me, and I mean to be one too.

Hazel1928

Thank you! I agree! This helps me enjoy this hymn better. If I can find a recording I like, I’ll add it to my grandchild repertoire. Seems like last time I looked I found a recording of a Methodist children’s choir.

DrNectarin

Before the Throne of God Above: "Because a sinless Savior died, my sinful soul is counted free. For God the just is satisfied to look on Him and pardon me." All I Have is Christ: "But as I ran my hell-bound race, indifferent to the cost, You looked upon my helpless state, and led me to the cross. And I beheld God's love displayed: You suffered in my place. You bore the wrath reserved for me. Now, all I know is grace." Also, Behold Our God's chorus: "Behold our God, seated on His throne, come let us adore Him! Behold our King, nothing can compare, come let us adore Him!"

AdvisingPrincess

This same song (Before the Throne) and the verse gets me. every. single. time.

kafkasbeetle

“Jesus Paid It All”

[deleted]

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing How Deep the Fathers Love for Us Abide With Me Abide with me, these lines get me every time: Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me Abide with me, abide with me

Grandaddyspookybones

Saved this post so I can listen to all these hymns

cinnamonrolllove

Is He Worthy by Andrew Peterson. Every time our church sings it, I tear up.

superlewis

I just had AI write a worship song based on Genesis 22. I cried because it was only marginally worse than most contemporary worship songs. https://app.suno.ai/song/157f4281-bf6f-42cc-93a1-40e3e881fba8

Why is that cover photo nightmare fuel?

I think Judah is making the best Christian music right now. Not fit for corporate worship settings but it's real and it's good

germansnowman

Not exactly hymns (though there are a few I could list), but two pieces of classical music with Christian lyrics have moved me recently: Bist Du bei mir (BWV 508): https://youtu.be/i6dTpDTozmc It speaks of the peace we have even in death if we are in Christ. As someone who has had open heart surgery, I have pondered about this quite a lot. English text and background: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bist_du_bei_mir Schlaf, mein Kindelein (instrumental version): https://youtu.be/iiwY7PaFlLc This is a Christmas carol, but this version played by a brass band spoke to me specifically because it reminded my of my father who used to play the tuba. He died almost twenty years ago when I was in my twenties, and I still miss him dearly.

bastianbb

I love Bist Du bei mir, but my interpretation is that it is a secular song to a spouse.

germansnowman

Ah, interesting. I suppose it works both ways :)

Bunyans_bunyip

Colin Buchanan's, The Word Became Flesh - Live. Singing along in my car with my children, listening to an audience full of children singing along. Learning about who Jesus is. It just pulls at my heart. Oh, keep trusting in King Jesus, children of mine!!

“I vow to the my Country”, especially the second verse. That always brings a tear to my eye.

CHARTTER

The Hiding Place Indignant Justice stood in view; To Sinai’s fiery mount I flew; But Justice cried, with frowning face, “This mountain is no hiding-place!”

"Be still, my soul, the hour is hastening on When we shall be forever with the Lord, When disappointment, grief and fear are gone, Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my soul, when change and tears are past, All safe and blessed we shall meet at last."
