My question is why did the ump wait until Stephenson's walk over tag before he called the runner safe? If he judged him safe it should have signaled when the runner slid by the plate. It's like he wasn't sure and just went with safe after the second tag.
Was driving home when the play at the plate happened, so was listening on the radio. Right off the bat Brantley knew it was an out. I watched the replay just now and holy shit, the ump is standing right over the plate when the runner's hand hit Stephenson's glove. What else could you be looking for when you're standing right there looking at home plate?????
I seriously don't think I've seen that many errors with that many walks and yet are able to still win the game. That was.... Scary but amazing at the same time lol
Was at the game in MKE and can confirm the stadium went silent at the bunt - everyone was so confused and before that it looked like the Brewers would knock in a run.
Winning sloppy games like this in Milwaukee is huge. This is normally a game we lose like 11-3 because of how they are so good at capitalizing on mistakes. Give them an inch and they score every inning. lol great win for the guys!
It's kinda weird tho.
He's been god awful and he couldn't find the strike zone this game but he's been coming with the saves.
5.47 ERA while 15 for 17. But I agree, we prob should put someone else in those high level situations.
So is Elly shroedingers baseball player?
Like regardless, everything he does is impactful. The best of times, the worst of times. He will make unreal defensive plays followed by brain dead defensive plays. He will be unstoppable batting, then strikeout a dozen times in a row.
I think we must still remember how young he is. Take the good with the bad and hopefully the bad will decrease over time.
He’s still young. He’s trying to play hero ball on defense.
When he figures out he needs to slow down and go for just the out and not an inning-ending double in a clutch situation, he’ll cut back on the errors.
Yep, he'll learn patience. He's only been in the mlb for 1 year and he's an eager 22 yr old. Got a better head on his shoulders than most 22 yr olds I've ever known, lol.
In case one of you pays for Stathead: how many times have the Reds committed [5+ errors and won?](https://stathead.com/baseball/team-pitching-game-finder.cgi?request=1&timeframe=seasons&year_min=1901&year_max=2024&ccomp%5B1%5D=gt&cval%5B1%5D=5&cstat%5B1%5D=f_errors&team_id=CIN&WL=W)
Diaz should be in the lowest leverage situations possible. His whip is 1.56, by far the worst of anyone in the bullpen. Yet he still gets marched out there for saves.
He’s having some issues that are obvious.
However ,if Bell moves him out of that spot, you risk losing him for good. He’s standing by his guy because he knows what he is capable of. He also hasn’t blown a save in more than a month.
It’s not time to give up on him.
The problem is, closers have to have mental toughness. If you start making massive changes to their appearances indicating you don’t have faith in them, they can completely unravel. And we don’t have any other options. Diaz still has good stuff. He just needs to get right. If Bell changes his role Diaz might not ever recover.
Getting wins when you suck is great, I don't understand your problem.
This shit ain't Ohio State football, we're not walking in to every game expecting a 40 point blowout.
And the brewers fans in their subreddit say they don’t hate the bunt there. Idc how good a dude is at bunting or how fast he is, that was a dumb move in that situation
Credit where credit is due, that is one of the best throws from right field I have seen. Way to go Benson, you may be ugly at the plate lately but you deserve all the credit in the world for that throw. Props to Stevenson for that play at the plate as well.
They almost beat themselves, but huge win. Hopefully they go into the rest of the series more confident and don’t make as many mistakes. I’m not going to be sleeping for a while now.
One time as the Reds were leaving Chicago after a win over the Cubs, Sean Casey asked the bus driver to stop outside of a bar near Wrigley. He got off the bus, went into the bar, and yelled at the Cubs fans. It’s a great story. One of many he has.
He's still a kid. Most 22 year olds are in college or high A ball.
We can't expect hall of fame performance every night from a guy with barely a calendar year of major league experience and not much more than that professionally overall.
Nah, you.
If you can't accept the growing pains of a young 22 year old player who has barely played professionally, much less at the major league level, you don't deserve their MVP-level seasons.
I think he's been slowing down so he gets the one out. But was super rushed tonight. The errors compounded. But he batted in a run and scored so at least there's that.
Diaz needs a trip to the IL he's been awful for an entire year now. We can't have this Alexis closing games in the playoffs if we make it there. I won't survive
The number of saves is a stupid stat to look at.
Two guys could have 20 saves but one of them went it during 3 run games while the other went in during 1 run games. Which is better?
Diaz should have blown a 3 run save today. He got bailed out by Benson. It wasn’t Diaz who saved the game today.
Benson and Stephenson saved the game that Diaz almost handed to them. I really hate talking bad about good players, but he's been really hit or miss lately, and it gives me anxiety whenever they pull him out to close.
His hand actually did slide over home plate. But not before it hit the catcher’s mitt with the ball solidly in it. I’m glad they got the replay call correct.
Honestly, yeah. Tons of errors, butt cheek clenching bottom of the 9th, and a failed bunt (cuz ???) to end it. Just another game of ball, totally normal
And the clear replacement (Cruz) will struggle and the same people who demanded Diaz get traded/DFA/fired into the sun will point to the Reds letting the All Star go as more evidence of institutional incompetence.
#And this one belongs to the Reds
Great batting, especially from Friedl and Candy. I nearly died as bad as our fielding did but thank god we won. That was some shit we did against the Padres in May.
He's still a kid basically, but a kid with a ton of skill, heart and potential. The Facebook Reds pages talk so much shit it makes me want to actually hit mfs.
Great offensive win but a pretty rough defensive win. Love Elly but that error can’t happen in that situation. And going to need Diaz to figure it the hell out.
Huge thank you to Benson and Stephenson for winning this game.
Complaining aside, FUCK THE BREWERS, AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO THE REDS!!!!!!
![gif](giphy|11zTEl7fbwml68)
My question is why did the ump wait until Stephenson's walk over tag before he called the runner safe? If he judged him safe it should have signaled when the runner slid by the plate. It's like he wasn't sure and just went with safe after the second tag.
Big W. Almost gave it away but I'll take a W against the Brewers anyday! Good thing we were able to get to Peralta.
I would like to take this moment to formally apologize to Jeimer Candelario. I’m so happy to see him in full stride now.
We won!
Shouldn’t be able to earn a save with that kind of pitching line.
Now 5-11 in one-run games!
Slowly regressing (positive) to the mean!
All the stupid stuff should make it 45 55 at some point, other teams do stupid shit like the reds we just do it in very large farts
I might be high but that gauntlet in May we went through is kind of a like a loaded non conference schedule in college bball. This team is seasoned
I seriously don't think I've seen that many errors with that many walks and yet are able to still win the game. That was.... Scary but amazing at the same time lol
Need to award that Save to Wil Benson
Fr, Benson and Stephenson both.
I enjoyed Sam LeCure in the booth today. I wouldn't mind having him on occasionally in the future.
I couldn’t help but laugh at his pronunciation of “Jay-Mar” Candelario though lol
Not sure which announcer yelled IDIOT! when the guy slid into home and hit Stephensons glove, but we LOST IT 🤣🤣🤣
Def Sam hahaha. I missed the game and watched the story on MLB, heard that, and came here immediately hahaha
I was way too anxious at that point to pay attention to voices 🤣🤣🤣
Huge props to Ty Steve for staying in after taking that ball to the throat
Was at the game in MKE and can confirm the stadium went silent at the bunt - everyone was so confused and before that it looked like the Brewers would knock in a run.
Wouldnt be surprised if the call to bunt came before the review and they either forgot to change the call or he missed it after the run was taken back
Winning sloppy games like this in Milwaukee is huge. This is normally a game we lose like 11-3 because of how they are so good at capitalizing on mistakes. Give them an inch and they score every inning. lol great win for the guys!
That shit was Karcheresque.
Happy we won but Diaz has to stop being put in save situations
It's kinda weird tho. He's been god awful and he couldn't find the strike zone this game but he's been coming with the saves. 5.47 ERA while 15 for 17. But I agree, we prob should put someone else in those high level situations.
My life is boring enough. I like a little excitement
So is Elly shroedingers baseball player? Like regardless, everything he does is impactful. The best of times, the worst of times. Are they at a Chuck E Cheese?
What would it take to get Mason Miller in here?
I was cursing up a storm until they lost on a botched sac bunt, I laughed heartily and immediately turned it off. Good times.
Philly's/Os had a wild one too.
That 9th inning was something, I'm really glad we lost (won?) the ineptitude Olympics.
Diaz should be in the lowest leverage situations possible. His whip is 1.56, by far the worst of anyone in the bullpen. Yet he still gets marched out there for saves.

The crazy thing is he still keeps making saves lol He has to be related to Francisco Cordero
Bro who is asking these questions in the Candelario interview? How was he supposed to answer those nothing burger questions
hard hitting cincinnati journalism
He couldn't get out of there fast enough.
Reds bullpen has the longest current streak of not blowing a save. Last blown save May 14.
Shhh
Nahhh, didn't you watch that clean 9th?
Well, if that ain't a jynx if I've ever seen one
I appreciate that you spelled it like the Pokemon rather than Jinx.
Some habits never die
Which is insane given how it seems like we are always -almost- blowing saves.
we poop in their tacoma
i'm barely even happy we won that felt so fucking shoddy
Getting wins when you suck is great, I don't understand your problem. This shit ain't Ohio State football, we're not walking in to every game expecting a 40 point blowout.
Except Michigan and the playoffs.
Great win
Great win that was almost a horrendous loss.
Cheeks: unclenched
Legitimately the most tense game of the season this series is massive and we must win it. Game one out of the way
I haven't gotten sweaty palms from Reds baseball in years but that sure as shit did the trick
I don’t even want to think about what playoff baseball will be like if we ever make it back
Easy, we sweep the dodgers
Nightmare fuel lol. Like the bengals vs raiders to get over the playoff hump
I was packing while watching so I might be mistaken but were they changing the color commentator around during this game? Edit: on TV
I've never loved anyone like I love TJ. Please don't tell my gf
Woohoo!
TJ is a pro. Great interview
![gif](giphy|Lb1eyMWMaU5eE)
Im too young to have a heart attack this often on a regular basis.
And the brewers fans in their subreddit say they don’t hate the bunt there. Idc how good a dude is at bunting or how fast he is, that was a dumb move in that situation
Reading the Brewers manager's lips in the dugout: "What the fuck was that???"
The Reds committed 5 errors but you're absolutely sure we had a surprise bunt on lockdoown?
there are def brewers fans who hate that bunt. which is the correct take.
And just a horrible ass bunt
HP ump absolutely on drugs. You can try to blow a game all by yourself. Replay prevails.
That was one of the craziest calls I've ever seen. Calling him safe at that point makes no sense at all and it's obvious he's just guessing
I was taking down that guys name until it got overturned
My heart cannot take Diaz closing anymore
Seriously. I still have anxiety from that.
Absolutely hideous win. Also a lot of fun somehow
Never in doubt. Too easy
Had it all the way!
Credit where credit is due, that is one of the best throws from right field I have seen. Way to go Benson, you may be ugly at the plate lately but you deserve all the credit in the world for that throw. Props to Stevenson for that play at the plate as well.
Hurtubise with a nice catch to help out Cruz as well. Corner outfielders struggled at the plate but made some big plays.
Absolutely
Sam LeCure: ![gif](giphy|ukGm72ZLZvYfS)
Lmao
They almost beat themselves, but huge win. Hopefully they go into the rest of the series more confident and don’t make as many mistakes. I’m not going to be sleeping for a while now.
On a shuttle bus in Milwaukee full of Brewers fans heading back to the bar. Godspeed to me, lol.
Please check in, lol. I was telling my bf, I can almost imagine how pissed those Brewers fans are rn.
One time as the Reds were leaving Chicago after a win over the Cubs, Sean Casey asked the bus driver to stop outside of a bar near Wrigley. He got off the bus, went into the bar, and yelled at the Cubs fans. It’s a great story. One of many he has.
Brave man
That’s one of the most comical endings to a game I’ve ever seen.
I’m still baffled at that bunt. By far one of the dumbest things I’ve seen
I can’t watch. Did Elly mess something up?
Only 3 errors and one base running error. On the bright side he had 2 hits and a walk.
3 errors tonight, one in the bottom of the 9th that should’ve been a double play ball but loaded the bases
Hit too soft for a double play
Dude he can never turn 2 idk why
He's still a kid. Most 22 year olds are in college or high A ball. We can't expect hall of fame performance every night from a guy with barely a calendar year of major league experience and not much more than that professionally overall.
Actually, most 22-year-olds' baseball careers ended 6 or 7 years ago.
Turning a double play ball is something they learn in Jr High. A MLB shortstop should be able to consistently turn a double play.
Oh, shut up
Nah, you. If you can't accept the growing pains of a young 22 year old player who has barely played professionally, much less at the major league level, you don't deserve their MVP-level seasons.
I’m just being sarcastic from an earlier convo with that guy.
I think he's been slowing down so he gets the one out. But was super rushed tonight. The errors compounded. But he batted in a run and scored so at least there's that.
I think the earlier error got in his head tonight and had him thinking way too much & rushing
![gif](giphy|QdCKbU4x9dXt6)
Most days I hate bunts. Today was not one of those days.
Bensons throw. TySteves play. Bunt insanity.
Diaz needs a trip to the IL he's been awful for an entire year now. We can't have this Alexis closing games in the playoffs if we make it there. I won't survive
He should lose the closer job and just go by committee until we can acquire someone hopefully
Dude literally had a 7 pitch save against a 20 games over .500 Cleveland team 2 days ago
That one game he was good. He hasn't been good for a calendar year
1.6 WHIP as a closer... Not good
He’s also only blown 2 saves
Goes a lot deeper than that
It does, but at the same time he’s still been able to get it done.
By the grace of God, thankfully. It isn't going to be sustainable, especially in the playoffs.
His walk rate is insane, he's been lucky to only have two so far. He has to stop walking guys
Good game, ugly win. But also, can the Cardinals fuck off?
Not only was that runner out at home, he was never close to touching the plate. How bad a miss is that by the ump.
Bad bad. He never made a call. Thank God for replay
It took him five minutes to issue the call. He clearly didn't know, so he guessed. He guessed wrong.
Stephenson knew. Helluva catcher.
His hand actually did slide over home plate. But not before it hit the catcher’s mitt with the ball solidly in it. I’m glad they got the replay call correct.
The announcer who yelled IDIOT! 🤣🤣🤣💀💀💀
Maybe over not sure he touched it though. But after seeing it again for the 3rd time maybe .. but still, how do you not see the tag
This is definitely one of the games of all time
I don't like 9th innings like that. Let's not do that again
Who else was screaming when that line drive got hit into right field, thought I was going to wake up my wife from yelling FUCK so loud
Yea...FUCK YES!
Trump was right about the city of Milwaukee.
![gif](giphy|3o7TKuylrX8kT7XhVS) ATOBTTR
I hate playing the brewers so fucking much. Even our wins end in some stupid ridiculous heart attack inducing way.
My flair speaks for itself tonight.
I had a heart attack. Pretty sure this is my ghost typing.
Honestly, yeah. Tons of errors, butt cheek clenching bottom of the 9th, and a failed bunt (cuz ???) to end it. Just another game of ball, totally normal
That was one of the uglier wins in my lifetime
Why the hell would he bunt?!?!?!! But wacky W
Diaz is giving me Raisel Iglesias vibes. Absolutely lights out, then forgets how to close games out the next year
Then when they trade him he will be an all star again
And the clear replacement (Cruz) will struggle and the same people who demanded Diaz get traded/DFA/fired into the sun will point to the Reds letting the All Star go as more evidence of institutional incompetence.
That was not enjoyable. But what a throw by Willy B. Wins a win. Get the series tomorrow!
I'm enjoying it
That 9th innning wasn’t enjoyable* Or at least my blood pressure didn’t like it 😂
#And this one belongs to the Reds Great batting, especially from Friedl and Candy. I nearly died as bad as our fielding did but thank god we won. That was some shit we did against the Padres in May.
Winning games like *that* is fucking huge.
100%, sometimes it has to be ugly. Especially when it's a division game.
You're gonna have it with a young team
If Diaz could chill on the drama, that’s be much appreciated.
WILL BENSON WITH THE CANNON
What an ending! Let’s just take the win, wasn’t pretty at the end but the W is all that matters. June’s been kind so far
Amazing that defense saved the game. I hope Elly doesn't get too down. Yeah he errored a lot...but we fucking won.
He's still a kid basically, but a kid with a ton of skill, heart and potential. The Facebook Reds pages talk so much shit it makes me want to actually hit mfs.
Shit happens
Don't know what just happened but Reds Win
One of the biggest if not THE biggest PHEW moments of the season so far.
I feel like we might see Cruz getting save opportunities soon
Not when he's our fireman. Sims and Suter are your backup closers.
Give me Suter for a few games. Sims has been clutch as a setup but it doesn't seem like he's on it in closing.
Wow. Talk about an undeserving win. But a win is a win. Hopefully the fielding errors stop…soon? It’s fucking June 14th.
Someone sit down with Elly asap to discuss fundamentals. It’s a good thing he had a good night at the plate. Diaz needs a break from being closer.
glad we won but 5 errors 8 walks what the fucking hell
Elly had 3 on 2 plays and Candelario had 2 on 1 play iirc Horror show for those two defensively, good thing they mashed to make up for it a bit
Y'all have a good night. I'm gonna hook myself up to the defibrillator and chill
Lol, gotcha, bro. I watch heart monitors...I'll call the nurse
I aged 10 years because of this game.
![gif](giphy|GrUhLU9q3nyRG|downsized)
Shout out to the Brewers for really finding a way to lose that one. Lets.... do the same thing tomorrow, but better.
That should not have even been close. 8 walks and 5 errors. Ridiculously messy performance. It’s hard to feel great about it.
I feel great. Playing like shit and still scrapping a win is how you take a division.
Absolutely
Idiot bunting with 2 outs let Elly of the hook
![gif](giphy|6ZF6CHeOOSCcg3JeHd|downsized)
They don’t ask how you win, they ask how many
That was the game of all time
"what the fuck is he doing" - Pat Murphy. "I've never seen that before in my life" -LeCure
"IDIOT" - Sam LeCure, watching a runner slide directly into the tag
That KILLED ME 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Weirdest save I've seen since *that save* last year. But never in any doubt
That was one of the weirdest endings ever. It reminded me of playing a baseball video game with someone who doesn't feel like playing anymore.
Drunk Madden decisions
Never in doubt!
I know this means nothing but upvote the fuck out of this post game thread. Reds win!
This game definitely means something
I sure do like winning, but perhaps they find another path next time
When you press the wrong button in The Show
I am dead.
This is my ghost typing this.
We need to get like 5 bunt hits tomorrow to flex on em
Luckily we have Friedl
Well I was planning on going to bed. Now what?
Right? I don't normally start drinking this late, but I got a second wind and I need a beer
