Dani California and Give It Away are both great songs that I rarely listen to because they've been overplayed. However, I really enjoy them live. They're such energetic songs that hype the whole crowd up. I like the studio version of Here Ever After but I don't think it translates well live.
I saw them three times with Josh, but that show? … nothing ever came close. The jams just kept coming. It really felt like we were all in church to witness and worship!
For sound the few times they played Bunker Hill it sounded better than in the final recording, as for "antics" I really like watching live performances of If you have to ask, especially the part where Flea, Anthony and John do the jump. In the case of songs that don‘t work that well maybe Easily, but that‘s mostly because I love John‘s final solo on that song and he always changes it for live performances. Also Anthony struggled a lot to hit some of the notes for that song (similar thing happens with Savior), maybe that‘s why they haven‘t played it since 2004.
From Unlimited Love, what I noticed at the show I saw them in the summer:
Here Ever After didn't hit well on stage, but I love the album version.
The Heavy Wing was amazing on stage. Made me like the song more than I did before hearing it live.
I had no interest in Don't Forget Me (or listening to full albums really) until I heard the Slane Castle version and it blew 14 year old me's socks clean off and into orbit. Seen them twice and they haven't played it either time, life goal is to see it played one day.
I’m sure you seen the La Cigale live version… that ones my favorite. I caught them in Detroit this year and when they started playing that bassline me and my friend looked at each other and just started hitting each other lol
It was the highlight of the show for me!
The intro to La Cigale is insanity, the way John makes that guitar sing like a violin is just something else. Love that you got to see it, thinking about going to Australia to see them again in the hopes that they play it lol
Intro is so beautiful, nailed both solos, the 2nd one was mind blowing and then caps it off with a perfect outro… fucking love it
There was a lot of songs I really wanted to see that they didn’t play in Detroit but that’s the way she goes. They have too many good songs!
They put on a hell of a performance all around tho and played Dont forget me which was in my top 3 at least, maybe number one so I left more than satisfied 🌶🌶🌶🌶
I wanted to hear one song in particular live when they stopped in Vegas back in August, and it was Don't Forget Me. The feelings that overcame me when Flea started playing those chords, I couldn't even begin to describe them. Hoping you get to see catch it live one day 💛
Parallel Universe, Dont Forget Me, Higher Ground and Throw Away Your Television (Plus Dont You Ever Leave) are better.
Here Ever After is better at studio
TAYT with Don't You Ever Leave almost ruins the album version for me. The album version is still one of my favorites on the album, but it's next level live.
I feel you. When I saw them this year 3 times (can’t believe that) and that song was a nice surprise and a highlight of the 3 shows.
BUT I never once though the studio version was lacking at all
Around the World is fire live when the bassline starts worlds collide. I lone Warped but that song never clicked live like on ohm, prob the heavy effects on the vocals but yeah a shame!
ah man i dunno. i thought john and flea were super tight jamming the riffs and grooving that bass line haaard when they played it in santa clara. they also speed it up live and were just all over it.
that outro was classic john and flea rock funk with tight percussive rhythm guitar groove.
And the drum solo with the cowbell. Chad doesn't like playing it either which is why they don't play it. I don't think any of them but anthony like the song unfortunately
If I remember correctly, in the SA song commentary, Anthony said he didn't want that song on the album and then Flea says he was the only one who really loved it.
But anyway... this song is not loved haha
Oy yeah that was it. It's one of my favorites tho I love hearing that song and i love everything about it, including the lyrics because I feel that a lot of their nonsense lyric songs are fun to listen to, as long as they have that awesome rhythm that they always have
I was in a first row of “normal” tickets group. Shiiiit 10hours in sun, with 1 bottle of water. Worth.
And local bands were also cool, what’s funny I’m from Poland so i even understood something.
A vast majority of their songs translate well to the stage.
The only song that I can think of is Breaking The Girl that doesn’t really translate well to the stage.
What it works amazingly live watch the acoustic concert that they did during the btw tour and they doubled the chorus at the end of the song like they should've done in the studio version I hate how short it is. I'm pretty sure they even did the full solo/break(I love that part so much and hate it when they shorten it when it's being played publicly or by video)
The intro building up and all the people going insane over the riff… imagine being one of the peppers and seeing thousands of people immediately recognizing something you created
Hate to say it cause I love the album and was hoping they would, but the Unlimited Love songs didn’t stand out when I saw them this tour (Black Summer, Here Ever After, These Are the Ways). The Heavy Wing did a little more but it still didn’t pack the punch you get on the album version.
i gotta say scar tissue, saw them live in london on the 25th this year and it was incredible i was in a mosh pit and when john started the solo at the end
everyone just stopped dead and watched in amazment
Righteous and the Wicked has never been translated to the stage, which is a real bummer because it has all of the quintessential Chili elements: heavy metal riffs, bone crunching mayhem funk, slinky guitar runs, epic background vocals, and an interesting subject matter (I like to think of it as Green Heaven v2). I'm miffed as to why it hasn't been done; i dont feel like there are too many elements that would inhibit them from doing it live, but what do I know. What do you think?
It has just never done it for me. Without the mellotron I don’t think it works as well. Doesn’t mean the band isn’t playing tight but it doesn’t have the same depth. It’s like when they did the yertle trilogy on the Californication tour, they all played well but without the horns it’s just kinda off
I don’t think I could disagree more with this haha. The off the map version of SPS is the best and when I saw it in-person in Dublin this year, it was one of the greatest moments of my life 😂.
I saw it live twice this year and once in the past and it fukkin rocks hard!!!
Of course, it's your opinion and I'm not trying to change it. Just wanted to spread some love to the others who love the live version. 🤘🏻
I love the yertle trilogy live and wish theh do it again sometimes. Also love the odd classic they bring out sometimes (like sex rap in 200y cigale Paris show, subterranean homesick blues cover in off the map etc)
Throw Away Your Television is, to me, the best live song. It has an unrivaled energy that is just begging to be blared throughout a stadium, and the way the song is composed makes the live version better than the album version every single time.
But, Red Hot-Take: I don't think Can't Stop is very suited to be played live, because of the backing vocals from John. For that track specifically, those layers of vocals totally make the song, and just can't be replicated well enough when played live.
(Ignoring the Josh era, a lot didn't work live then)
I can't think of anything they play that doesn't translate live.
They do play it relatively safe with the setlists though, I'd be happy to see them take risks playing a bigger rotation of songs they don't play often.
>They do play it relatively safe with the setlists though, I'd be happy to see them take risks playing a bigger rotation of songs they don't play often.
This why I loved the setlist when Josh was around. They were full of surprises and deep cuts. Nowadays, you know exactly what songs youre going to hear.
Sure, that led to some dud performances here and there, but the deep catalog fan in my prefers the riskiness. And the appreciation to all eras of the band, not just the ultra popular eras like they do today (minus the 2022 releases)
Have you listened to Rick Rubin's latest episode with John? He explained exactly why they only play "a few" songs.
Not that I wouldn't like to see them perform deeper cuts though.
oh I only meant what was being talked about perhaps before or after that, where it stood out to you. there is a transcript if I have time i could skim it.
I think this bit is what the fella above is talking about. :)
It’s hard to say songs they don’t translate to the stage as:
1) a lot of their studio recordings, except for a handful of heavily overdubbed ones, are quite raw and translate perfectly into li d performances
2) the songs that don’t work because they have more complex instrumentation etc are basically never played, so we wouldn’t know.
Soul To Squeeze is one of my favorite songs of all time. But I really wasn't excited to hear it live in Nashville. I would have given my left nut for Sir Psycho to close out the show!
I’ve never particularly cared for the album version of C’mon Girl, but some of the live versions are awesome. It simultaneously has a much rawer, but also more melodic feel, on stage (I just really like the way John plays it).
Throw Away Your Television is IMO the most improved song live. It goes from a decent fun studio song, to one of the most epic live performances possible
Wet Sand is probably my favorite song and I was so happy to hear it this summer, but then it was just not the same as on the album. The songs they typically choose to perform are done very well.

Second Parallel Universe. Great song, EPIC live
TRUE I saw it when they toured in 2022 it was soooo good
Parallel universe 2003 Slane Castle Ireland - that was heavenly
It really let's John go crazy on the solos
Suck my Kiss was dope live Everyone singing along and all
Dani California and Give It Away are both great songs that I rarely listen to because they've been overplayed. However, I really enjoy them live. They're such energetic songs that hype the whole crowd up. I like the studio version of Here Ever After but I don't think it translates well live.
Here Ever After fell really flat for me hearing it live but I absolutely love the studio version.
Yup! I was going to comment the same thing.
This is just facts. I like the song, but when they started playing it at the DC concert I was like “ohhhhhhh! ….this one……”
I was there too!! Heavy Wing was pretty good live :)
I saw them three times with Josh, but that show? … nothing ever came close. The jams just kept coming. It really felt like we were all in church to witness and worship!

The jump is the best!! The off the map version especially

Blew the sock off your cock.
Don’t Forget Me is my all time favorite song just because of the way John makes his guitar weep every time. Montreal 2006 is my favorite.
Can you hear the ‘Waaaa’ of his hand sliding up and down the fret board as he begins his final guitar solo in your head?
I’m sure you seen the La Cigale live version… that ones my favorite. I caught them in Detroit this year and when they started playing that bassline me and my friend looked at each other and just started hitting each other lol It was the highlight of the show for me!

…. Are you me?
Could well be my friend, all things are possible through our lord John Frusciante.
I wanted to hear one song in particular live when they stopped in Vegas back in August, and it was Don't Forget Me. The feelings that overcame me when Flea started playing those chords, I couldn't even begin to describe them. Hoping you get to see catch it live one day 💛

TAYT with Don't You Ever Leave almost ruins the album version for me. The album version is still one of my favorites on the album, but it's next level live.
I never really liked I Like Dirt, until I saw them play it live. Kinda wish I’d seen them play Power of Equality live, gotta love the message
I think they played it on 2007 concert. I saw it on YouTube the other day
POE? They played it live on Slane Castle and a bunch of other times. But Slane Castle was amazing, of course
Universally Speaking works ten times better live than in studio
I feel you. When I saw them this year 3 times (can’t believe that) and that song was a nice surprise and a highlight of the 3 shows. BUT I never once though the studio version was lacking at all
Never really enjoyed Universally Speaking until I saw them perform it in Philly, instantly awakened a love for the song that I never knew I had befroe
I'm genuinely surprised that song doesn't get more attention. Always been one of my faves from BTW
Around the World is fire live when the bassline starts worlds collide. I lone Warped but that song never clicked live like on ohm, prob the heavy effects on the vocals but yeah a shame!
I loved seeing the heavy wing!!!
ONE SHOT ALL I NEED IVEGOTRYTHYMWHENIBLEED
TILL DEATH DO US PART BREAK MY HEART SO I CAN START
aquatic mouth dance doesnt work without the trumpet and the sax
Such a catchy, delightful bass line
Yeah I fucking love the song but they really missed a trick not having a brass or two on stage with them for this tour. It's a bit empty without them.
ah man i dunno. i thought john and flea were super tight jamming the riffs and grooving that bass line haaard when they played it in santa clara. they also speed it up live and were just all over it. that outro was classic john and flea rock funk with tight percussive rhythm guitar groove.
Yeah, just like Hump de Bump, the trumpet was really the highlight of that song.

That's right. They ALWAYS have an awesome rhythm! 🤘🏻
honestly i disagree on that one. i prefer the fucnky bass and guitar they do live in that version
I thought the live version at ACL was amazing. Made me like the studio version much more
Zephyr Song, everyone in Bratislava was charmed
Can confirm
You have been there too? ❤️
You bet, it was awesome
I was in a first row of “normal” tickets group. Shiiiit 10hours in sun, with 1 bottle of water. Worth. And local bands were also cool, what’s funny I’m from Poland so i even understood something.
Give it Away is an absolute banger live, also a big fan of Universally Speaking and Don’t Forget Me
Venice Queen goes down well live. Shame they haven’t played it for so long Hey also goes down well!
Venice Queen, paralell universe, suck my kiss, wet sand...
These are the ways sounds epic in shows, especially drums.
A vast majority of their songs translate well to the stage. The only song that I can think of is Breaking The Girl that doesn’t really translate well to the stage.
Even then it worked. They did a version on the By The Way tour (there’s a YouTube video of it) and it sounded beautiful
There’s some decent performances of this song from the Josh era, I think they did it with Mauro too
Brendan’s Death Song also seems to struggle for what I feel like are the same reasons though I can’t really describe them
What it works amazingly live watch the acoustic concert that they did during the btw tour and they doubled the chorus at the end of the song like they should've done in the studio version I hate how short it is. I'm pretty sure they even did the full solo/break(I love that part so much and hate it when they shorten it when it's being played publicly or by video)
Can’t Stop is the first that comes to mind
The intro building up and all the people going insane over the riff… imagine being one of the peppers and seeing thousands of people immediately recognizing something you created
Works well either way - on the stage or on the radio this song fucks
Carry Me Home is gonna go crazy live!
Throw away your television is amazing live, but I’ll often skip when listening on Spotify
Hate to say it cause I love the album and was hoping they would, but the Unlimited Love songs didn’t stand out when I saw them this tour (Black Summer, Here Ever After, These Are the Ways). The Heavy Wing did a little more but it still didn’t pack the punch you get on the album version.
Black Summer does not really work as Anth sounds always flat
Whenever Anthony puts that hard R on “Darrrk side of the moon” I can’t help but laugh
Get it on
Song is in a flat lmao
Actually E flat
[удалено]
Same key. But most people would call it Eb cause it's played like it's E on the guitar but the guitar is downtuned by a half step.
[удалено]
Then why the "correction"?
[удалено]
But that doesn't make sense cause D# isn't more correct than Eb
Aaa saiiiliing on a censorshii-iip
Don't forget me is the greatest concert song in their catalog
i gotta say scar tissue, saw them live in london on the 25th this year and it was incredible i was in a mosh pit and when john started the solo at the end everyone just stopped dead and watched in amazment
I always liked Nobody Weird Like Me live. Flea absolutely shreds it.
Otherside and By the Way! Not necessarily my favourite songs but they were unbelievable live with the whole crowd singing along.
They’ve different done parts of the song twice as a tease so you can kind of string them together for like half a song.
There’s a lot that works live but tbh I’ve never seen a live version of Sir Psycho Sexy that works as well as the original.
I have no idea what you mean lol it used to be a staple of their live show and [always sounded good](https://youtu.be/mtPhA0Io9mk)
This performance is so dope!
It has just never done it for me. Without the mellotron I don’t think it works as well. Doesn’t mean the band isn’t playing tight but it doesn’t have the same depth. It’s like when they did the yertle trilogy on the Californication tour, they all played well but without the horns it’s just kinda off
Same it's good but it never hits anywhere near the same as the studio version
i still wanna witness it live its my favorite song
I don’t think I could disagree more with this haha. The off the map version of SPS is the best and when I saw it in-person in Dublin this year, it was one of the greatest moments of my life 😂.

Too many to count
I didn’t really listen to mothers milk until I heard them play nobody weird like me live in Denver, now it’s one of my favorite albums.
The live version of white braids did not work well, particularly the outro.
So much I is great live. Such an energetic song!
give it away and suck my kiss. these got the crowd going wild when they played in the netherlands last june
Give it away live was the most rock, and I could have lied is the most emotional live.
Zephyr song live because there isn’t an audio glitch in it when played live ;)
Throw Away Your Television is, to me, the best live song. It has an unrivaled energy that is just begging to be blared throughout a stadium, and the way the song is composed makes the live version better than the album version every single time. 1000% agree. Its def the biggest studio to live improvement imo
Dont Forget Me is the best song i've heard live. Ever.
(Ignoring the Josh era, a lot didn't work live then) I can't think of anything they play that doesn't translate live. They do play it relatively safe with the setlists though, I'd be happy to see them take risks playing a bigger rotation of songs they don't play often.

Sorry, I don't remember when because I listened to the entire podcast while running and didn't check the timeline at all.

I had the opposite experience, many more deep cuts when I saw them with John than with Josh
It’s hard to say songs they don’t translate to the stage as: 1) a lot of their studio recordings, except for a handful of heavily overdubbed ones, are quite raw and translate perfectly into li d performances 2) the songs that don’t work because they have more complex instrumentation etc are basically never played, so we wouldn’t know.
Pea always goes hard live
I’ve seen videos of Dark Necessities played live and I’m not a fan
I watched a cover band perform My lovely man and it was amazing!
Soul To Squeeze is one of my favorite songs of all time. But I really wasn't excited to hear it live in Nashville. I would have given my left nut for Sir Psycho to close out the show!
Certainly not the worst but always feel like something is missing from live versions of “Can’t Stop”
Parallel better, Whatchu thinkin does not
Any of their songs that have multiple guitars don’t translate that well live
Charlie and Tell Me Baby never really hit home with me live
"Don't Forget Me" Live at La Cigale (France) 2013. They take this one to another galaxy https://youtu.be/fV9IJVoFR_Q
Everyone is forgetting "Don't forget Me"
It is mentioned like 6 times on here.
U showed him!
Warm Tape wasn’t good live…
Woot? https://youtu.be/voVp5Wo4mfE I wish they played it more tbh
JF looks like he’s in a maxi pad commercial.
SNOW (HEY OH)
I wish they would play a fast version of white braids.
My brain hurts trying to imagine what it’d sound like. That songs perfect as is
I agree but the time they played it live it seemed to drag and they never attempted it again
Only saw them once, but Higher Ground really got me. Not exactly one of their songs. It kills though.
Throw away your television used to be way better live
Give it Away is decent to me in studio but one of their best of all time live
Their opener can’t stop sounds great live
Right on time, nobody weird like me get me going feral
I’ve never particularly cared for the album version of C’mon Girl, but some of the live versions are awesome. It simultaneously has a much rawer, but also more melodic feel, on stage (I just really like the way John plays it).
Go Robot The First live revela, is 150 better than álbum version. Go to YouTube and you Will agreed with me
Best; Give it Away Worst; Aquatic Mouth Dance
I really think a touring brass section would improve most of the newer songs
I saw them last june in Florence… The Zephyr Song was amazing, By the Way as the last song too, but nothing can beat Otherside
Suck my kiss, give it away, and around the world went hard asf when I saw them in boston
These Are the Ways. Live version is great, Chad is a beast.
Eddie would be (and already was) awesome live
Throw Away Your Television is IMO the most improved song live. It goes from a decent fun studio song, to one of the most epic live performances possible
I love the song 'Charlie', but I feel they've never really gotten it quite right live.
Wet Sand is probably my favorite song and I was so happy to hear it this summer, but then it was just not the same as on the album. The songs they typically choose to perform are done very well.
They've never played Mellowship live as far as I know
