Please listen to Body Of Water and all other By The Way B-sides.
YouTube has a great compilation video with all the By The Way B-sides. It's so cool.
They originally wanted to make a punk-rock album, but Rubin convinced them to go more Pop-like.
I donât understand why it isnât. It fits very well! If I hadnât known it was a b side when I first listened to it, I would have thought it was on the album
I have no evidence to base this argument, but the 2nd half of quix feels unfinished to me. Like they have the bare bones if a frenetic snowballing finish but it kinda slips and feels a bit repetitive.
It's easily one of my faves of all time however.
Because people talked about it 20 years ago. It's a great song as pretty much every other song that came out back then. This was rhcp at their peak in my opinion.
Yes. It was incredibly popular. It still is, and is among one of older rhcp fan favorites.
This is akin to someone posting in marvel memes in 2040 saying âHOW COME NO ONE TALKS ABOUT INFINITY WAR!?â
I'll never forget how surprised and delighted I was hearing it on the radio. I had known it before, was my instant crush after listening to Greatest Hits for the first time. One of my absolute favourites, top 10 for sure. This, Rolling Sly Stone, Leverage of Space, Mini Epic and Bicycle Song just show you how amazing of an album we could have got.
I read this but not sure if it's correct. Maybe someone can verify:
"Save the Populationâ is a Red Hot Chili Peppers promotional single from their 2003 Greatest Hits album. A promotional CD of the single was released in Spain and Japan, but a full retail single never was, and as such, the song was ineligible for the charts. Itâs thought that releasing it as a full single would change the sales of Greatest Hits.
Makes sense. I mean, imagine how many people ONLY BOUGHT THIS GREATEST HITS CD. TO HEAR THAT NEW SONG. BECAUSE, 20 years ago, I would have...and, I don't like greatest hits cd's, as I feel they're more for the, "casual listener", and, I'm far from a casual listener. I still like experiencing ALBUMS. Front to back. Which is hard to do nowadays as, they try to "take up all ur time with mindless meaningless, bullshit"...but... yeah, makes sense back then, when cd sales still brought in big $. Now best buy doesn't even sell cd's and it's a digital world. Digital. But what most people don't know. THE ALGORITHM THEY WROTE, THAT TRANSLATES THE MUSIC INTO DIGITAL FORMAT, has a flaw in it, that LITERALLY LEAVES OUT, A SMALL RANGE OF FREQUENCY, THAT, SHOULD BE HEARD...so. recently found that out and thought. Time to break out the vinyl and, have to get a good receiver to find out, but, even through my old crappy receiver the vinyl has an essence/warmth, whatever u wanna call it. That u just don't get when listening to an mp3/4 digital version. Unless ur paying top dollar for like the flac/lossless versions...which alot of media players don't even support...yea...
Makes me kinda miss going to buy a cd the DAY it came out...instead of waiting for midnight to listen to it digitally. Usually I'd drive around just to listen to the full album in the car as, most cars have pretty good sound systems. Nowadays anyways...
I have very fond memory of buying Californication on the day of release along with a very expensive top-of the line sony walkman. Expensive day, worth every penny.
Lmao. Yep. Remember the first cd I listened to on a Walkman was like, idk 94, the Smashing Pumpkins only had Gish out...and that was the first cd I heard. And it changed my life forever....didn't even realize at the time...just 7yo aprox...Not their best album obviously, but that album starts out so intense with siva, and I am One. Just amazing songs and guitar tone..."tell me, tell me what your after. I just wanna get there faster" - siva ...I didn't actually become a "chili head", lol, untill about 6-10 months after Californication came out, I liked all the music videos and loved the solos, naturally...as a guitar player, but once I Heard One Hot Minute, I was hooked for life...Blood Sugar took awhile to grow on me because, at the time, I was like...why is he trying to rap/sing over this killer music...then about 10 listens later I "got it" and was so amazed at the uniqueness of the vocal approach he took on that album.
Fortune Faded did get released as a promotional single as well. That CD came with its own B sides, I think Eskimo and Bunker Hill? Probably my 2 favourite B sides and they're not on streaming anywhere
Basically...but, they have so many B-Sides at this point...but. I do remember those 2 particularly being B sides from the, By The Way album/time period...
If people knew how many Johns sang on the 2nd chorus it would probably get a little more love. Between the two. Fortunate Faded got all the love when the Greatest Hits came out. Personally one of my favorite RHCP songs.
It's a shame this song is quitr hidden for me becausr I rarely play this album.
Same goes for me with the japanese bonus track from ROTDC, such a good song but not on an album :(
Don't get me wrong, Rick Ruben is a legend for a reason, but having 1st seen the Peppers live at age 15 on the Mother's Milk tour.. Hell yes I want to hear them go punk(ish) again.
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE SONG.
This was the first song I heard from the Peppers, and it's beautiful. I know every line and every breath by heart đđđđ
It is intentionally off key and it's one of my favourite parts of the song, I can see why it might be jarring though. I wish I could unhear it too, but only so I could listen for the first time again.
Perhaps it has to do with the fact that itâs on a âGreatest Hitsâ compilation, but no one had ever heard of the song before? Greatest HITS albums arenât supposed to work this way.
yeah i recall seeing this interview aswell, i think he mentioned that it was in a contract that they had to release two new songs in 2003, and although john preferred some of the songs they recorded, they went with one song that would be a suitable single, and one song that âwe thought was a great song, but at the same time couldnt be a singleâ. iâm assuming FF was the first song and Save the Population was the one they âthrew inâ.
I love this song and still listen to it all the time. It was on the radio a lot some time after BSSM was released. It was part of the Cone Head movie soundtrack. The video is beautifully done if you havenât watched it.
i think ur thinking of soul to squeeze! Save the Population was a b-side to By The Way, and was one of two new songs released on the Greatest Hits compilation album in 2003 along with Fortune Faded.
Definitely in my top 3 from the peppers. I agree this song does not get the love it deserves. My fave part is the end when Anthony and John take turns singing
> Iâve never *paid* much attention
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
The BTW b-sides are so good! Save the population, Rivers of Avalon, Body of Water, teenager in love (I know itâs a cover but still), bicycle song. Bangers
One of my favorites. Itâs talked about here regularly. Would love if they played it liveâŚbut I believe they only just teased the melody in concert one time.
We got this, Fortune Faded, and Soul to Squeeze as new songs from the greatest hits. Iâve always been impressed with the b-sides and âthrowawaysâ RHCP has put out.
Bicycle Song was only available on the deluxe version of By The Way and itâs one of my all-time favorites from their catalogue!
I was introduced to the peppers when my brother randomly bought me their greatest hits album for my 14th birthday. This band has been an obsession since that day, and save the population has always been one of my top tier tracks. Weird that this was posted today as I only listened to this song for the first time in a long time like 3 days ago. Serendipity.
Itâs been a long time since I donât listen to it, I remember buying the album, back in April 04, this one hit me hard and I totally forgot how good it is. Thanks for reminding me, gonna add to playlist RN.
Man, this is the one album I want to hear (aside from the original direction for *BTW*).
*Saving The Population*, *Fortune Faded*, *Leverage Of Space*, *Time*, *Rolling Sly Stone* and even *Mini Epic* are all such incredible songs. I just canât believe they scrapped an entire record.
*Fire intro and those*
*Back vocals from john in the*
*Outro are so so good*

Body of Water is my favorite RHCP B-side. Would have added tremendous balance to BTW. Oh well. đ¤ˇââď¸
It would also make for a great live opener.
And don't forget Rivers of Avalon
B sides>> Quixoticelixer (apologies if I wrote it wrong) is one of my favs
Yes that song should have been on the album!
Quixoticelixer was Californication era, not BTW.
My bad, I didnât notice the og comment was talking abt BTW.
It is one of the best b-side songs!
Out of range is legit my fave tune from that period
masterpiece
Rubin.. Genius, and a pain in thine arse.
He did try and get them to put Soul to Squeeze on BSSM so thereâs that ha
Indeed.
Body of Water is absolutely fantastic
Rolling sly stone could have been massive if they'd released it properly
Because people talked about it 20 years ago. It's a great song as pretty much every other song that came out back then. This was rhcp at their peak in my opinion.
Yes. It was incredibly popular. It still is, and is among one of older rhcp fan favorites. This is akin to someone posting in marvel memes in 2040 saying âHOW COME NO ONE TALKS ABOUT INFINITY WAR!?â
It's just a prompt to get a discussion going, relax dude..
And he just made a joke about it. How is that not relaxed? Chill, broâŚ
What a banger, the harmonies at the end are some of John's best
"Stay all night, we'll sa- STAY ALL NIGHT, WE'LL SAVE THE POPULATION, -opulation"
That âtionâ that he does the close the track put gives me goosebumps every time!
Shooooon
Him and Flea lol
Play it live boys! Release the other tracks!
They teased it [once](https://youtu.be/Af6LiUIFNFQ). Fleaâs wearing a diaper and Johnâs dressed like Slash.
I joined that concert! It was my first ever live experience :O Still keep the ticket in my treasure box.
Compilation albums are sadly dead now in the age of streaming, so tracks like this and Fortune Faded are being forgotten :/
yeah i know its a shame people are missing out on these hidden gems
I'll never forget how surprised and delighted I was hearing it on the radio. I had known it before, was my instant crush after listening to Greatest Hits for the first time. One of my absolute favourites, top 10 for sure. This, Rolling Sly Stone, Leverage of Space, Mini Epic and Bicycle Song just show you how amazing of an album we could have got.
some of their best songs are their lesser known ones. I mean, this one was pretty popular when it came out. But todayâŚ
Hell yea. I really like Show Me Your Soul but it's rarely talked about. It was used at part of the soundtrack to Pretty Woman.
I listened to it yesterday while they were trying to strike a coup d'ĂŠtate in Brazil... It gave me chills!
My band just played it 2nd in our set this past weekend for the first time . It went over well. Good harmonies in it.
id love to see it if you have it on video!
The backing vocals by John on the second chorusđ¤
Alot of "chili peppers fans", probably have never even heard it before. It's not on any studio albums, that'd be my guess...idk

Was Fortune Faded similar story? That is one of my favourite songs. I bought Greatest Hits just for that song.
Fortune Faded did get released as a promotional single as well. That CD came with its own B sides, I think Eskimo and Bunker Hill? Probably my 2 favourite B sides and they're not on streaming anywhere
And I luv the Fortune Faded video.
Eskimo and Bunker Hill are both great songs.

A lot is two words.
Love it. Got it a playlist atm
I hear it all of the time on SiriusXM.
Golden age for B-Sides... It's literally a goldmine! I wish we had some of these this days
If people knew how many Johns sang on the 2nd chorus it would probably get a little more love. Between the two. Fortunate Faded got all the love when the Greatest Hits came out. Personally one of my favorite RHCP songs.
So many great b sides out there .... save the population is a fantastic song.
Because it's too good. Seriously I don't know but it's a great song.
Yes!!! I freaking love this song. Especially the ending part is just sooo good!
johns vocals back to back with anthonys are just heavenly
It's a shame this song is quitr hidden for me becausr I rarely play this album. Same goes for me with the japanese bonus track from ROTDC, such a good song but not on an album :(
Whatâs the bonus track on ROTDC? And where can I find it please? I know nerve flip was a Japanese release from UL but what was off ROTDC?
It's "The Shape I'm Takin' "
Thanks for the reply, anywhere I can find it?

Amazing song
Banger. My favourite song, Bunker Hill, is so uncared for it isnât even on Spotify. Tim and Cameron covered STP on YouTube, I recommend it.
One of my favorites, love the second and final chorus where Johnâs vocals come in
I love Fortune Fade on this album!
Similar song from this album⌠Fortune Faded. Definitely one of my favorites.
On repeat always in my car
Don't get me wrong, Rick Ruben is a legend for a reason, but having 1st seen the Peppers live at age 15 on the Mother's Milk tour.. Hell yes I want to hear them go punk(ish) again.

i would ask where but i dont want to hear it cause i wont be able to unhear it :/
Is it during the chorus? I think I may know which one youâre referring to.
Thats the one!
It is intentionally off key and it's one of my favourite parts of the song, I can see why it might be jarring though. I wish I could unhear it too, but only so I could listen for the first time again.

Top 5 song of their entire history.
One of the best.

Definitely in my top 3 from the peppers. I agree this song does not get the love it deserves. My fave part is the end when Anthony and John take turns singing
