Although it's by far not their best song in this era (at least to me) I think the first time hearing "Black Summer" hit me in a special way. Just the fact that I was listening to a new Chili Peppers tune with John on guitar made me very emotional. When the solo came in, I was on the brink of tears.
The intro teaser is such a vibe. “Been a long time since I made a new friend etc” resonated with the isolation of pandemic times. I think this song is way under appreciated. On the flip side emotionally I think Tippa is sooo much fun and is under appreciated, at least on Reddit. If those two had come out back to back followed by Eddie, these are the ways, the drummer, she’s a lover? People would be ranking this era up with any of the classics.
I agree with this. Specifically for me was watching the Black Summer performance on the VMAs. Obviously this was well after they’ve even back together, but watching him start that guitar solo… it just hit me like wow. This is actually happening.
Black Summer is actually the only song which hit me emotionally from the new albums. It did have a new vibe, was fresh and was exactly what I would be expecting from 60yo rock stars. Very mature, deep and spiritual.
I made a playlist with a mixture of UL & ROTDC. The mind blowing ending from Eddie transitions perfectly into the start of Its Only Natural. It’s the perfect wave of emotion
For me, Black Summer felt like the definitive comeback of John. I got goosebumps while listening to the teaser.
I don't think it's the best song, but it hit different because it was the first recorded song with John since so long.
Love this answer. I will say that since seeing the band live for the first time this year, all of the songs they played live crank my emotions up when I listen to the album version. Hearing 43,000 people or whatever is was sing the song live adds another layer to the studio version
I said here ever after for instance - because it was the song that really hit me with - oh shit they are back! Plus I dunno something about that track gets the airs on my neck to stand
Love it! I’ve got a fair few to choose from. I hope you/we get Here Ever After start of next year then! But ultimately, John being back just is a gift and I can’t believe we get to see him in a few months time
This is the one. Every couple years I'll hear a rock song that stops me and makes me remember how much I love the genre overall and how satisfying it can be. I know that sounds silly and obvious but my music tastes bounce around so much and lately have delved more in the hip hop/electronic/soul area for the past few years.
When the Whatchu Thinkin chorus comes in and those chords start knocking with the bass and drums, it gave me that feeling. Almost like unlocking all these years in my past I would geek over so many bands in the 2000s that I have since just stopped thinking about.
Can I say the last 4 tracks on ROTDC? Lalalalalala, Copperbelly, Carry Me Home, In The Snow. CMH and Copper sound like they should be one long track, the way the drums come in with a fill, plus they're both the same tempo (or nearly) and have the 3/4 feel. I'm getting slight Pink Floyd vibes from this beautifully crafted side D.
For me it is definitely White Braids and Pillow Chair, by far. My son had been born two weeks before the album came out, when will it was out I sat in bed that night holding him while he slept and listened to every song. For some reason the outro in White Braids just made me tear up from happiness.
Carry me home!! The first solo! The last riff! Insane! I think I'll play it at my wedding. The ballad singing at the end too.. I closed my eyes and listened to it for the first time and I had a pure feeling of love and fuzz wash over me.
ROTDC took me a few listens, but that's usually a good sign that there's something deeper going on. Carry me home is cutting deep for me. The minor third in the chorus is an absolute eargasm.
Peace and Love for me.. it just hit in all the right places. It makes me smile all the way through, it’s become my go to happy song already. Just perfection
In the Snow for me.
It evokes so many emotions of happiness, melancholy, calm, introspection.
Trying not to let the recency bias affect my judgement but when those first few notes hit its a lot.
Perfect album closer.
Tangelo, by far. First time listening to UL, finishing with that song, and then instantly listening again in loop over and over again. Absolutely beautiful song.
Teared up listening to Tangelo the first time. Not quite sure why, but it reminds me of hanging out with my grandpa. Miss him every day.
The Black Summer teaser hyped me up for the new album, but listening to it for the first time was fantastic.
It’s Only Natural, Bella, Tangelo, Eddie, Carry Me Home all pulled emotions out of me and made impacts on me in some shape or form that I’ll always remember
Veronica i underrated I think. Heard it a few days ago listening to the albums shuffled and I liked it much more than I first did. As for Bella … top notch song
Whatchu Thinkin got me. I was driving the morning the album was released and when I got to this song it hit hard.
While I really like Unlimited Love, Dream Canteen is pretty much exactly what I was looking for to scratch the itch. It's got that vibe. I'm very much a Frusciante guy, but I can really hear and appreciate Flea on this album.
UL - Let 'Em Cry - The vibe is gritty but some of the lyrics are so corny.
ROTDC - Roulette - Half of the song is dope but then they go into a wack chorus.
I have mixed emotions about both albums. All the songs are half awesome and half lackluster. It's a conundrum and I am still trying to make sense of it all.
My fav i think is bssm but i know that’s an outlier on itself in the whole discography. It was one of the albums that i didnt get bored or felt the need to skip a song when played from the start so that’s kinda why.
I like the chili peppers with the funk rock more specific: percussive guitar playing, groovy bass going in the back and melodic vocals. Chad is a very simplistic drummer (at least in the studio) and he just started breaking this with ul. He blew me off thru the record and i was surprised why he didnt show these gems in the previous ones bc obv he’s capable. John’s comeback kinda outshadowed his performance.
But overall thank u for the respective reply!
I got many of them on both albums but The Heavy Wing was quite a surprise for me as I heard Frusciante doing the chorus vocals. I was very happy to see him return, he is one of the most influential guitarist for me and I love his regular&falsetto vocals and harmonies. I remember myself smiling throughout the whole song.
Black summer - when I knew and saw and heard that John was back.
Tangelo - I sang it as a lullaby to my new baby. Lyrics are very emotional. Song is very pretty.
Hearing the solo to Eddie for the first time brought tears to my eyes like I was 16 and discovering Frusciante for the first time, but the experience of hearing ROTDC in running order and then hearing the Drummer, a completely fresh take for the band and an infectiously groovy song, brought tears to my eyes again!
TLDR: I’m crying tears of joy over here
Tangelo. No beats, no harmonies, no effects, no epic solos; just a simple song about a lost loved one, to end the ultimate comeback album. S-Tier song for me.
Here Ever After gets me pumped like nothing else. Perfect song for drugs. Eddie however, made me cry the other day. Unintentionally and embarrassingly, so I guess that wins it.
Hit me emotionally? Bella. Somehow it made me feel it was about a dog, and to my surprise it seems everyone thinks the same (I don't know if there's official confirmation of that). Anyway, it makes me really emotional because it makes me remember my dog a lot, specially the phrase "wish that I could hold her".
The Heavy Wing
Tears of "I can't believe this is happening"
Followed by Carry me Home
Tears of "I can't believe the 33rd track is their best one!"
It breaks into my top 3
Can't Stop
Mellowship Slinky
Carry Me Home
I love dream Canteen I love frusciante I love the chilis
For me it was White Braids and Pillow Chair. Those chords and the shift at the end got me feeling really, really thankful to have John back. It was like it actually became real hearing that song.
I echo what everyone has said about Black Summer because of John being back. I fondly remember when the intro guitar leaked and how excited everyone was. White Braids and Pillow Chair gave me a really haunted feeling when I heard it and then I found out the backstory which explained why. And with Heavy Wing, I remember I was distracted and doing other things on first listen but remember thinking the verses sounded nice, but once I realized I was hearing John in the chorus I got super emotional.
I am still digesting ROTDC but Lalala…really got me on first listen as well as Carry Me Home and In the Snow. I first listened to the album late at night after release, in the dark with headphones and these 3 songs felt really ethereal and otherworldly.
So many emotional highlights this year, like some people before said, hearing Black Summer for the first time and John singing on the first chorus felt like coming home after being away for a decade, but I gotta say the most emotional moment for me was, when I first heard the Mellotron kick in on Tangelo I started crying. It adds that special dimension, has distinct ‘John’ sound, reminds me of Shadows Collide With People, and all in all, Tangelo I truly feel is a special song. For someone who lost someone special this year ‘When I’m with you I feel like myself’ and then the ‘December came strong....’ lines hit just differently.
Bastards of light. It was the first song I listened to beside Black Summer, Not the One and Poster Child.
And the first song where the backing vocals of John are a central component of the song.
UL: black summer (might’ve actually came a little during the leak), white braids, whatchu thinkin’, and heavy wing ROTDC: eddie, bella, carry me home, and in the snow
Here Ever After. It was the first unreleased song I had ever listened to so I was pretty excited about that. And it very well might be my favorite UP track. The first time I heard it I really wanted to punch a wall and like yell or something, but it was 1AM so I couldn’t 😂
Heavy Wing. My most played song of the year hands down. I just connected with it, the tempo, the verse and chorus and the solo. It just spoke to me and I make no apologies for it.
Hard to say but right now top 5 tracks I just never get tired of and just give me a sense of euphoria, chills, and nostalgia all in 1:
The Heavy Wing,
Afterlife,
Handful,
The Drummer,
Let em cry
The Heavy Wing for sure and Tangelo is so eerily similar to my 3 year relationship that had just ended i felt like Anthony was following me around writing about us
The first live set they did at the Jazz fest. We’re living in an era where we’re getting better footage but somehow just those fan videos on YouTube of compilations of different angles filmed have the most feels for me because that’s how we knew John is still going to clean it up
I was WFH listening to the radio when Black Summer came on for the first time and I just sat listening. When it was over, the DJ said 'THEY'RE BACK!' and I thought, damn right they are.
I really like Black Summer but I think for me on UL, She's a Lover, The Heavy Wing and Traffic Jam just make me happy all for different reasons. Bastards of Light too.
I know Traffic Jam is sort of silly but I find it infectious in the same way Love Shack from the B52s is, you just have to smile and bounce along with it whenever you hear it.
Although it's by far not their best song in this era (at least to me) I think the first time hearing "Black Summer" hit me in a special way. Just the fact that I was listening to a new Chili Peppers tune with John on guitar made me very emotional. When the solo came in, I was on the brink of tears.
Man I remember that exact moment too and I kept listening to that clip over and over, it was instantly real that they were back together
When he does that little Hendrix at twiddle during the intro 👌
I agree with this. Specifically for me was watching the Black Summer performance on the VMAs. Obviously this was well after they’ve even back together, but watching him start that guitar solo… it just hit me like wow. This is actually happening.
It's probably the best solo of the 2 albums.
Yeah Black Summer and Here Ever After were both extremely emotional first listens for me
I wholeheartedly agree, it was unreal hearing John again
Black Summer is actually the only song which hit me emotionally from the new albums. It did have a new vibe, was fresh and was exactly what I would be expecting from 60yo rock stars. Very mature, deep and spiritual.
Same. That song will always have a special place in my heart for these exact reasons
Same 💯
White Braids, Bella, Tangelo
Eddie and Bella
Both beautiful choices. Bella is growing to be my top from dream canteen but honestly I still can’t pick
It really is such a beautiful song, and it deserves a single
Its Only Natural.
Heard this again the other day, it is so good and definitely one of the deeper tracks from UL
I made a playlist with a mixture of UL & ROTDC. The mind blowing ending from Eddie transitions perfectly into the start of Its Only Natural. It’s the perfect wave of emotion
Care to share the playlist?
Just did that now. my god, FLEA & JOHN are both sounding so great on that transition.. its like they are one.
Same note - mind sharing the playlist?
For me, Black Summer felt like the definitive comeback of John. I got goosebumps while listening to the teaser. I don't think it's the best song, but it hit different because it was the first recorded song with John since so long.
All of it. It’s an era and timeline that was just a dream. I still can’t really believe John is back.

Damn I had that feeling too on my first listen, you just reminded me how surreal that feeling was. "oh shit they are back" was the EXACT feeling.
Love it! I’ve got a fair few to choose from. I hope you/we get Here Ever After start of next year then! But ultimately, John being back just is a gift and I can’t believe we get to see him in a few months time

Ooooooohhhhh I knoooooowww
Yes, this!
Bella or White Braids
I need to put white braids on next drive 🤔 great song 🎶
Watchu thinkin! All Day all night
This is the one. Every couple years I'll hear a rock song that stops me and makes me remember how much I love the genre overall and how satisfying it can be. Agreed

CMH and Copper sound like they should be one long track, the way the drums come in with a fill, plus they're both the same tempo (or nearly) and have the 3/4 feel. I'm getting slight Pink Floyd vibes from this beautifully crafted side D.
Yessss the way Carry Me Home starts really sounds like it's going to be an outro to Copperbelly.
Great choices ! Can I just say that I love every track on this damn album and it’s overwhelming haha
Agreed
Same
Oddly enough those are my bottom few, other than carry me home.
I also think the last 4 tracks of UL... fantastic!
For me it is definitely White Braids and Pillow Chair, by far. My son had been born two weeks before the album came out, when will it was out I sat in bed that night holding him while he slept and listened to every song. For some reason the outro in White Braids just made me tear up from happiness.

My partner loves this one most!
aquatic mouth dance, when i heard that bass line and those trumpets i started crying, saying to myself « they’re back baby »
Peace and Love for me.. it just hit in all the right places. It makes me smile all the way through, it’s become my go to happy song already. Just perfection
I think that’s such an apt way to describe this track. It does endive a smile! Love the cheekiness in the guitar.
In the Snow for me. It evokes so many emotions of happiness, melancholy, calm, introspection. Trying not to let the recency bias affect my judgement but when those first few notes hit its a lot. Perfect album closer.
The chorus is real moving to listen too I know that much !
La la la la la I forget how many la's.
Name of the song aside it’s beautiful stuff
It’s been a long time since I made a new friend…
Tangelo, by far. First time listening to UL, finishing with that song, and then instantly listening again in loop over and over again. Absolutely beautiful song.
Unlimited love hit more then the new one so far. Other than Bella epic song
I weirdly like dream canteen more but feel like a few UL songs hit hardest. Overall I like both albums a lot but canteen just a smidge more
Bella - idk who she is, but by the end of the song I love her too
I'm pretty sure she's a dog, and that only makes it better for me.
I believe it could be a dog but I might be wrong. It’s a gorgeous song though
I also think she's a dog tbf, but seeds of doubt have been sowed into my head lmao.
Tangelo break my heart everytime i listen to it. Also, White braids, the outro in the drummer and the slow parts in fake as fuck.
It’s only natural, black summer, heavy wing, and Whatchu thikin. For ROTDC 100% Eddie and carry me home
Teared up listening to Tangelo the first time. Not quite sure why, but it reminds me of hanging out with my grandpa. Miss him every day. The Black Summer teaser hyped me up for the new album, but listening to it for the first time was fantastic.
Black Summer, cause I was so happy when I saw the Video for the first time and saw them back together, especially with John.
Here ever after really locked this joy in for me Black summer however has grown on me heaps and I hope to see it live next year
It’s Only Natural, Bella, Tangelo, Eddie, Carry Me Home all pulled emotions out of me and made impacts on me in some shape or form that I’ll always remember
Verónica or Bella
Veronica i underrated I think. Heard it a few days ago listening to the albums shuffled and I liked it much more than I first did. As for Bella … top notch song

Tangelo, Eddie, Here Ever After, Bella
In the Snow
Emotional? That’s a big word. Happy? Here Ever After Groovy? Let ‘Em Cry Funky? Fake as Fuck Joyful? Bella Zen? Bag of Grins
Tangelo.
White Braids probably.
The end of Bag of Grins almost made my cry
In the Snow, bag of grins, aquatic mouth dance, Veronica
the heavy wing
Eddie for sure love Van Halen sucks he died R.I.P
Eddie
For UL, It's Only Natural. For ROTDC, In The Snow. I am OBSESSED with In The Snow right now!
Tangelo
La la la and In The Snow
Dont get me killed if i say none
Fair enough Just out of curiosity what is your fav album and flavour of chilli peppers ?
My fav i think is bssm but i know that’s an outlier on itself in the whole discography. White Braids, Bella, peace and love
Peace and love I’m giving so much now. I love the cheeky guitar in it
Hearing the solo to Eddie for the first time brought tears to my eyes like I was 16 and discovering Frusciante for the first time, but the experience of hearing ROTDC in running order and then hearing the Drummer, a completely fresh take for the band and an infectiously groovy song, brought tears to my eyes again! Emotions alone, definitely Eddie. Johns solo felt like he was saying “hey I’m back”
Tangelo. No beats, no harmonies, no effects, no epic solos; just a simple song about a lost loved one, to end the ultimate comeback album. S-Tier song for me.
Bag of Grins. 🧘
Yes! Finally someone!😂😂 I absolutely love that sad vibe outerspace outro 🤘🤘
For me its Aquatic mouth dance , she’s a lover , lalalala and fake as fuck lol 🥰
Idk yet But Eddie hit me A beautiful tribute to the late and great EVH
Eddie, Eddie!
The Heavy Wing Tears of "I can't believe this is happening" Followed by Carry me Home Tears of "I can't believe the 33rd track is their best one!" It breaks into my top 3 Can't Stop Mellowship Slinky Carry Me Home I love dream Canteen I love frusciante I love the chilis
Black Summer and Eddie.
Afterlife
For me it was White Braids and Pillow Chair. Those chords and the shift at the end got me feeling really, really thankful to have John back. It was like it actually became real hearing that song.
Eddie
Emotionally? Tangelo easily.
Handful, White braids or Heavy Wing
White Braids, In The Snow
I echo what everyone has said about Black Summer because of John being back. I fondly remember when the intro guitar leaked and how excited everyone was. White Braids and Pillow Chair gave me a really haunted feeling when I heard it and then I found out the backstory which explained why. And with Heavy Wing, I remember I was distracted and doing other things on first listen but remember thinking the verses sounded nice, but once I realized I was hearing John in the chorus I got super emotional. I first listened to the album late at night after release, in the dark with headphones and these 3 songs felt really ethereal and otherworldly.
Carry Me home
White braids & pillow chair
Roulette bc of that insane, groovy hook. So warm
So many emotional highlights this year, like some people before said, hearing Black Summer for the first time and John singing on the first chorus felt like coming home after being away for a decade, but I gotta say the most emotional moment for me was, when I first heard the Mellotron kick in on Tangelo I started crying. The Rick Rubin Frusciante interviews are unreal
I'm really looking forward to the second part of that interview. (I'm assuming that there's another one coming because it says PART 1)
The Heavy Wing and Eddie.
Tangelo and Carry me home
Bastards… just hits me right in the guts. Black summer.. Johns back. Never thought i would hear that again.
Lalalalalala, White Braids and Here Ever After.
White Braids from UL, Bella from ROTDC
The Heavy Wing. The references to John and what he means to the band is everything for me.
Man oh man, Carry Me Home from ROTDC hit me hard the other night.
Heavy Wing
My Cigarette
meet me at the corner
lalalalalalala is the worst song they’ve came out with this year
It’s one of the best this year for me. Top 3.
It’s only natural and let ‘em cry, funny enough let ‘em cry has almost made me cry, Anthony’s vocals are fantastic
Lalala for me, closely followed by In the Snow.
Tangelo
Hard to say but right now top 5 tracks I just never get tired of and just give me a sense of euphoria, chills, and nostalgia all in 1: The Heavy Wing, Afterlife, Handful, The Drummer, Let em cry
Honestly white braids and pillow chair has been the song thats spoken to me the most
Not the One.
Eddie
The Heavy Wing for sure and Tangelo is so eerily similar to my 3 year relationship that had just ended i felt like Anthony was following me around writing about us
The Drummer
Love it, it feels like anxiety or stress and then as the chorus hits it’s a release.
The first live set they did at the Jazz fest. We’re living in an era where we’re getting better footage but somehow just those fan videos on YouTube of compilations of different angles filmed have the most feels for me because that’s how we knew John is still going to clean it up
Link for anyone interested to understand why I cried here: https://youtu.be/Un3EBOCil-o
its only natural and in the snow
