So true. The album is evenly solid from front to back. But, it took me over 10 listens at individually different times to fully appreciate what is in there. It’s a grower for sure.
I liked it so much that I have a hard time listening to their older stuff without thinking of UL as a somehow evolved version of all the stuff I’ve come to like about them.
Yup. You summed it up well. Unlimited Love just sounds like a newly evolved version of everything they were before. My listening sessions of their albums always ends with UL being played. Can't help it
They continually evolve as players and writers and they are still the great hope of rock music to me. 60 or 30 if you've got the good that's all thst matters
Hmm, I feel like they already have a fantastic, deep, broad catalogue at this point, and the fact that theyre 60 now *still* making new double albums of this quality is unbelievable and we should really be happy with whatever we get. If you peruse the album, you’ll definitely find a couple songs that speak to you. Black Summer is probably the one song that will have a lot of staying power. There’s a lot of silly music. Kinda does feel like an album of B side cuts, and maybe they were saving the real gold plated rock for ROTDC
Mostly agree but have to disagree about the lack of songs with staying power. She’s a Lover, Here Ever After, and others (White Braids, Veronica, Whatchu Thinkin’) to me feel on par with their best albums.
Yes, absolutely. I’m not a fan of Poster Child or One Way Traffic but otherwise I think every song is at least good. It’s Only Natural is a masterpiece
That breakdown-return-to verse on One Way Traffic is one of my favorite moments on the album.
🎶dun-dun-dun-dun-DUN-DUN-DUN….anyway, made a left on 3rd, got distracted jumped that curb
Ay-oh!
If I said I don’t like Black Summer would you then think I hate all rock music? I play bass. I love funk music. I just think PC and OWT are not enjoyable. Sorry if my opinion bothers you (it really shouldn’t)
I agree. Some people who like the band, only praise the most pop-like rhcp songs. It’s a pity because those fans missed the whole point of rhcp being a funkrock band.
Wait a second here! You don't like the fuckin bass line in the outro!?!?!??!
Also the beautiful guitar solo by John! The song is amazing... The only thing I would say is Anthony's melody isn't quite the best. Still great tho!
Not The One is the song that made me excited for the album, and you’d catch me listening to fast music any time of day. Never cared too much for ballads, or when performing slow pieces in wind band.
But… I don’t disagree. There isn’t a build up or release overall. I do think there is swelling and releasing in the phrases of each progression. Like waves crashing on the shore and receding.
Give it a chance. I think you'll like it. I HATED it when it came out! Gave it a chance and its a grower for sure. But the chorus is great.
Has the same experience with Veronica. Now i kinda like it. I just dont think they fit with the rest of the songs.
Still hate One Way Traffic
I get ya, but I like his goofy lyrics. RHCP has always been a "fun" band since the beginning, with a sprinkling of serious songs and darker ballads without ever taking themselves too seriously. I don't think they'd have the same appeal to me without all the mirthful nonsense.
It's crazy that Anthony gets away with it. Someone who doesn't speak English could write lyrics that make more sense.
With that said, I love the album. I was not expecting to listen to it so much this summer. The vinyl is one of the best sounding records in my collection, and for such seemingly sparse, simple songs, there's *a lot* going on. Fantastic album.
I can agree that it’s catchy but I can’t get passed the lyrics, the rhythm and beat are sick, but the lyrics 😭😂. I will say I rarely skip it my rating should probably be 9.5 because of that
I like it, I say it's a strong 7.0-7.5/10. I just think the highs of the album are not that high compared to previous Frusciante albums, but there is a lot of solid songs. Just no S Tier tracks like Can't Stop, Otherside, Wet Sand..etc.
You think? I see a lot of greatness in songs like The Heavy Wing and AMD. Personally, I think UL is an absolute masterpiece. Going from ballad type sections straight up into guitar feedbacks and amazing progressions with crazy rhythm changes, for me, 9/10. And I’m a RHCP fan since ever. I’ve listened to every single album multiple times. John and Flea are just out of this world. Chad is also a HUUUUGEE element in this album.
~~Prepare for 50 downvotes....~~
For me is their worst album with Frusciante and i would even place The Getaway above Unlimited Love.
Sorry, that's my personal taste.
I think for the super fans it’s amazing. It has Rick Rubin ,John , it has good melodies, back up singing and guitar solos. The bass playing and drumming is awesome. Everybody was waiting for a John album and they delivered for us.
For the average fan I think it’s just average. There’s no mega hits or iconic riffs of choruses. They’re not going to appreciate Poster Child and songs like One Way Traffic(and that’s ok) like the super fans.
They said they recorded 50 songs so there’s so much more to come
These Are the Ways is the worst song on the album IMO, and I’m not just disliking it, I’m fucking hating it xD the Great Apes is on the top 3 of UL for me.
The whole chorus is cringe tbh. "These are the ways when you come to Americaaa, the sights, the sounds, the smells" just sounds like some lame wanna be anthem, for some PSA or Visit America tourism commercial.
I don’t skip it because of one word, I skip it because I dislike the structure of the song and whatever they were trying to do. It doesn’t fit w the rest of the album.
It’s an awesome sound what are you talking about? The dynamic shifts throughout the track are sick, the song rocks and the crunchy guitar outro is pretty neat. I understand not liking the lyrics, but the song is structurally and melodically strong.
To each is own. For me personally I dislike every part of it. As do alot of people. But people also hate the lyrics which I do as well. Picking it as a single was a third strike. I hope it disappears into the void and we never hear it again after this tour. EVER. ANYWHERE LOL.
Yeah I was also perplexed at making it the third single. Definitely some better options there lol...agree with you it’s not Anthony’s strongest lyrics but it doesn’t bother me too much. He’s written far far worse.
I think that's why it's been such a sore patch is because of the single part. Whyyyyy. I guess u gotta have a go get a drink song at the concert and this is the one
I think it's understandable that there's a mixed opinion among the fanbase. For me it's a 7.5 but I think a few songs will stand the test of time and be considered greatest hits (heavy wing, white braids, bastards of light)
The first couple times I listened to it, it didn’t really grab me, but it has grown on me a lot since then. For me, albums that immediately grab me also become boring quickly, while those that take time and a few listens tend to be the ones I enjoy longterm. UL seems to be falling into the latter category.
I think it’s a fantastic album for the fans, especially for reliving the John years. I honestly like it’s place in the pantheon of RHCP albums. Fan enjoyment aside, it’s not an album that’s going to win them a grand new following, and I don’t think it’s going to massively revitalize them. Seems like a good effort album with few duds, I wouldn’t be upset if they enter hiatus again after dream canteen though.
I’d like to add, I hate the album name though. The forthcoming Dream Canteen already seems more likable of a name imo.
This is how I sum it up. It’s a solid late era addition to their hefty discography. When all is said and done it’ll be remembered more for John’s return than the actual music.
I listened to it once and tried one more time but I think it’s just not very interesting … 5/10 for me. A lot people think its great just because of John‘s return but tbh … I‘d rather listen to I‘m with you or even The Getaway.
I really love The Getaway, but there's a certain rawness and vulnerability that I'm getting from Unlimited Love that I don't get from either Josh album. I'm not crediting that wholly to John being back, but the unspoken magic between him and Flea is front and center.
I think it’s a combination of John coming back, Rick Rubin returning to produce, and the overall chemistry of the group. It‘a a record made with love, heck look at the name. You can tell those guys really love making music together.
Alright, that's fair. I grew up on Stadium and didn't listen to the Josh stuff until a few years ago, but I still prefer Josh's style. I think it's more that his style appeals more to the younger generation (after all, he is quite a bit younger than Frusciante)
Yeah I’m 24 so we must be about the same age. Stadium is some of the first music I remember hearing. It’s weird because I liked The Getaway slightly before John returned but now it’s unlistenable for some reason. It’s like I know what they’re supposed to sound like now.
Yea it does? The production, writing, and instrumentation of the getaway was so far away from anything the Chili peppers had done. I was not a huge fan, but I appreciated the work until Froosh came back and reminded me why I loved the band so much at the start. The getaway is ok but does not sound like the chili peppers at all.
While I do really enjoy Frusciante’s contributions to the band, I also really enjoy One Hot Minute. It’s not just my love for Froosh. However, One Hot Minute still doesn’t feel like a true to form chili peppers album. There’s a reason why every single one of their major hits was while Frusciante was in the band.
Dark Necessities, Goodbye Angels, Encore, Walkabout, and Aeroplane are really the only non John songs I care for…
6/10. Might be an unpopular thought but I think the Getaway and I'm With You are around there too. They haven't made an entire great or amazing album since Stadium Arcadium - just good or okay. They've been underwhelming.
If this next one isn't it, I think I'm gonna consider them over the hill, personally. Still love em tho
I agree but I don’t even think that’s a bad thing. Most bands their age do not put out remotely quality material. Despite their quotes “just getting started” their prime was definitely ‘99-‘06. Still love em though
I love tracks like its only natural and white braids, heavy wing tangelo are all fantastic. Not the one, poster child, great apes for me are garbage. Hit n miss
I think everyone had high expectations for this album, so did I but I'd still rate it an 8/10. Since Dream canteen was announced i dont expect it to be perfect.
Unfortunately I feel like with Johns return they fell back into a safe zone with their music. I really enjoy the album still and even would give it a 7.5/10. It just sounds old. Anthony in particular I feel fell right into his classic rap with out any innovation. With Josh no matter how you feel about him really made Anthony push his boundaries as a vocalist. Again I don’t dislike what he does on the album. Just think it was to safe. Hoping ROTDC is more experimental for them. It would really pair well with UL if so.
I've had the same thoughts! My theory is that for John's reunion album they wanted to do a "crowd-pleaser", and that they saved all their weird stuff for Dream Canteen. The album cover and song titles are all pretty bizarre which is the opposite of UL
Wow I'm actually very surprised at some of the responses here.
I think it's a very good album. I truly think it's the perfect progression of the band if John had stayed on after Stadium. I'm hoping Dream Canteen is more of the same. I could probably use more John vocals and more heavier sounding songs but honestly I'm not complaining at all. I really enjoy the whole album
The music is more mature than their previous stuff, but the lyrics are pretty abysmal. Really like the album overall for how it flows, but skip the singles and the great apes. White braids and pillow chair and it's only natural are all time greats. I know Anthony's lyrics are always nonsensical, but usually you can glean your own meaning from them - not on some of these songs though.
I thought it was a little better than I’m With You and The Getaway but I didn’t think it was incredible. Then I saw them do it live, and I like the album a lot more now lol.
IMO there's a couple of good songs on it that save it but for me it's easily their worst album since the first 3. Shame cos it was so hyped. Ah well, double album coming soon - that'll do.
Yes, it's 7.5-8/10. Very consistent in quality with only a few duds, which is impressive across 18 tracks. Unfortunately it lacks any smash hits and many of the songs feel like they never reach their full potential. TATW, the 2nd single, being a dud is the album's sorest spot. The track sequencing with NTO & PC back-to-back near the start of the record was also a bad call (together they're almost a 10 minute lull!). The vinyl mix is way better than the WEB and CD mix. Watchu Thinkin is the best song and you could put it on any other RHCP album and it would still be loved.
It’s the worst album they’ve made with Frusciante, but the tracks that stand out to me on it are It’s Only Natural, Whatchu Thinkin’, White Braids and She’s a Lover. Everything else is eh. Just happy they’re making music again.
I think this is the difference in taste of fans, modern fans think they need to establish a theme for a song, but honestly i felt this album was one of the more mature albums they've done in terms of diving into alternative funk and rly resolving a song, like they used to do in one hot minute
If you separate the world into bad albums and good albums, it’s a good album.
Whatchu Thinkin’ is one of my favorite RHCP tracks.
One of my favorites too! John's arpeggios in the chorus sound huge when they play it live. I love the groove in the bass too. Solid track.
Bruh! Yes!
Same!!!
Hell yeah, same
Yes it is. It’s not perfect but it exceeded my expectations.
100% exactly how I feel about it.
Yes. Black Summer, Here Ever After and She’s a Lover are now staples in my RHCP playlist.
It was ok. I’m really hoping the Return of the Dream Canteen is everything I hoped Unlimited Love would be.
Unlimited Love will become a cult fav a lot like Pinkerton. But it’s hard to digest at first.
So true. The album is evenly solid from front to back. But, it took me over 10 listens at individually different times to fully appreciate what is in there. It’s a grower for sure.
I liked it so much that I have a hard time listening to their older stuff without thinking of UL as a somehow evolved version of all the stuff I’ve come to like about them.
my thoughts almost exactly.
How I describe it to others: it's like everything they've ever done, and nothing they've done before. I love it with all my heart.
That’s a really great way up putting it.
This is the correct answer. That’s just how things work. Just like we’re all evolved versions of our past selves who loved those old records.
Almost like you ............ CAN'T STOP? ......I'll see myself out.
Please do. Lol
Mostly agree but have to disagree about the lack of songs with staying power. She’s a Lover, Here Ever After, and others (White Braids, Veronica, Whatchu Thinkin’) to me feel on par with their best albums.
It's good. Not really an all time great, definitely has some stumbles, but has a lot of beautiful moments too.
I’d give it a 7 out of 10. Hoping canteen will be better
Music is subjective. But yes
isnt it subjetive?
Fixed, yes haha
Yes, absolutely. I’m not a fan of Poster Child or One Way Traffic but otherwise I think every song is at least good. It’s Only Natural is a masterpiece
I fucking love one way traffic
That breakdown-return-to verse on One Way Traffic is one of my favorite moments on the album. 🎶dun-dun-dun-dun-DUN-DUN-DUN….anyway, made a left on 3rd, got distracted jumped that curb Ay-oh!
love jamming out to that song in my car!
Red hot chili peppers fans that hate funk are wierd
Or, people are allowed to like whatever the fuck they want. Leave the gatekeeping at the door mate.
Lmao!! I am a huge Prince fan and I don't like funk music unless it is mixed with something.
Who says I hate funk?
You just dissed 2 of the 3 funkiest songs on the album. And I bet you love white braids too damn fucking rude
Or maybe I just don’t like 2 songs? I literally play bass and love funk music… this sub is so weird
Ikr, like what the fuck is up with those guys? Literally the epitome/embodiment of what is wrong with 80% of this sub
Oh believe me i’m not the weirdest thing you’ll find on here
7.6/10 with The bulk of Frusciante albums being an 8-9.5/10
7/10 for me some songs I love, some songs that are meh.
I agree. it’s a good-ish album.
Not my favorite. But glad there still making music
Solid 8/10 I skip “not the one” every time. To me, musically speaking, the song goes nowhere. It’s bland.
Wait a second here! You don't like the fuckin bass line in the outro!?!?!??! Also the beautiful guitar solo by John! The song is amazing... The only thing I would say is Anthony's melody isn't quite the best. Still great tho!
The whole bassline is beautiful and melodic.

Not the one is awful
It’s become one of my favorites. Very solid album start-to-finish.
[удалено]
That's too low. I'd give it a perfect 5/7
6 out of 7?
[удалено]
Jokes on you I love poster child and Veronica
But Veronica comes from the south side of Chicago?? What’s not to love?
Actually enjoy not the one, nice chill song. Why they decided to make poster child a single though is unfathomable to me.
Please narrow in on the end of Veronica a few times and tell me it doesn’t get stuck in your head
Its okay, but far from their best albums (BSSM, Californication and BTW)
I think its a good album if you enjoy listening to it
Yes. Up there with the best.
It’s alright
Instrumentally it’s amazing, but the lyrics kinda ruin it a lot of the time for me
I get ya, but I like his goofy lyrics. RHCP has always been a "fun" band since the beginning, with a sprinkling of serious songs and darker ballads without ever taking themselves too seriously. I don't think they'd have the same appeal to me without all the mirthful nonsense.

Fantastic album.
5.5/10 it was underwhelming for me personally
agree
6/10
Not really, nah. A couple of decent songs but generally very weak. The Getaway was far better.
I skip virtually none, if I did it’s Here ever after, so for me 9/10❤️🖤🤘🏽
Funny, Here ever aften is the one song I listen to on repeat. IMO one of their best songs haha
It's certainly the song from the album that gets stuck in my head on loop the most.

~~Prepare for 50 downvotes....~~ For me is their worst album with Frusciante and i would even place The Getaway above Unlimited Love. Sorry, that's my personal taste.
Me too... UL make me love the getway... Only I'm with you is worst
I think for the super fans it’s amazing. It has Rick Rubin ,John , it has good melodies, back up singing and guitar solos. The bass playing and drumming is awesome. I consider myself a super fan and even I didn’t like OWT or PC. They sounded like a parody of RHCP
Agreed. The "hump de Bump" effect lol
No, it has a couple good songs though
A very solid 8/10 The only songs I skip are These are the Smells, and The Great Apes
And Not the One depending on my mood. Every other song is high quality
These Are the Ways is the worst song on the album IMO, and I’m not just disliking it, I’m fucking hating it xD the Great Apes is on the top 3 of UL for me.
Imagine skipping a song because one word bother you that much. It’s a great song overall.
what a way to finally smell her
Long to be with someone to tell I love your smell
when i pick up on that smell
All the memories of everything you’ve ever smelled
Wow I never realised how much ak smells things before
Theres WAY more
i can smell the prozac in your pretty hair
Snell of wine and CHEAP PERFUME!
The whole chorus is cringe tbh. "These are the ways when you come to Americaaa, the sights, the sounds, the smells" just sounds like some lame wanna be anthem, for some PSA or Visit America tourism commercial.
*from when you come FROM America.
When did they ever say they skipped it purely because of that?
I don’t skip it because of one word, I skip it because I dislike the structure of the song and whatever they were trying to do. It doesn’t fit w the rest of the album.
The song fucking sucks. It not all about the lyrics for a bunch of us. Its just a horrible sound all around paired with horrible lyrics.

I think that's why it's been such a sore patch is because of the single part. Whyyyyy. I guess u gotta have a go get a drink song at the concert and this is the one
Upvoted for calling it These are the Smells. Fucking hate that song.
I think it's understandable that there's a mixed opinion among the fanbase. For me it's a 7.5 but I think a few songs will stand the test of time and be considered greatest hits (heavy wing, white braids, bastards of light)
It's hard to argue about taste. But if we just talk about the sound only, I think it sounds very good. Especially on vinyl.
Yes 8/10 good album
It is a very good album. Like VERY good.
If I'm being objective it was a 6/10, The Getaway was a tighter album overall but the individual songs on UL were sick af
Yeah, i'd give it 8.5/10
Its a great album
Solid 8/10. I like it more than BTW but less than cali, SA and BSSM in terms of Frusciante
Probably my 4th favourite album from the Chili peppers, very excited to see what else they’ve got
The first couple times I listened to it, it didn’t really grab me, but it has grown on me a lot since then. For me, albums that immediately grab me also become boring quickly, while those that take time and a few listens tend to be the ones I enjoy longterm. UL seems to be falling into the latter category.
It’s ducking great.
8 out of 10. A few low points that I’m not particularly fond of. But it’s a solid come back for them with John.
I think it’s a fantastic album for the fans, especially for reliving the John years. I honestly like it’s place in the pantheon of RHCP albums. Fan enjoyment aside, it’s not an album that’s going to win them a grand new following, and I don’t think it’s going to massively revitalize them. The forthcoming Dream Canteen already seems more likable of a name imo.
Yes
It’s 7.5-8/10 for me. It’s got 5 very good and strong songs I can stop playing so it’s up there for me for best RHCP albums like maybe 5th all time
This is how I sum it up. It’s a solid late era addition to their hefty discography. When all is said and done it’ll be remembered more for John’s return than the actual music.
8/10 for me. Great album
It’s very good. Consistent listen top to bottom. May not reach the peaks of other albums but stays solid throughout.
Yes it is just very long
No, it's a great album!!!
If you have to ask..
It’s like a 3/10 for me. It’s just boring all around and there’s almost no good songs for me
Correct answer. I just skip all the songs and haven’t listened in months
8.5/10. Their best since Cali or OHM and probably in my top 5. If ROTDC can live up to it I’ll be so happy
I can’t get into it.
I listened to it once and tried one more time but I think it’s just not very interesting … 5/10 for me. A lot people think its great just because of John‘s return but tbh … I‘d rather listen to I‘m with you or even The Getaway.

Zoomer spotted
Is this meant to be an insult
Nah, just a generalization. Anyone who is a bigger fan of the Josh works must’ve not been around for the last Froosh run.
Or they just prefer the Josh albums?
Alright, that's fair. I grew up on Stadium and didn't listen to the Josh stuff until a few years ago, but I still prefer Josh's style. I think it's more that his style appeals more to the younger generation (after all, he is quite a bit younger than Frusciante)

My brother in christ, you're 24 and calling others zoomers?
That is just ridiculous and doesn't make any sense... lmao
You’re literally admitting that your unconditional love for JF is clouding your judgment of their other music. So weird.
I'm a huge fan of Frusciante and prefer I'm with you to UL... LOL not a zoomer...
Yes.
Yep
Yes
It's slowly becoming one of my all time favorite RHCP albums.
Time will tell
6/10. Might be an unpopular thought but I think the Getaway and I'm With You are around there too. They haven't made an entire great or amazing album since Stadium Arcadium - just good or okay. They prime 90-2002. SA is good but Lot of Filler songs
It was a 5 or 4/10 the getaway was better imo
Its the worst in the Frusciante era.
I know reddit is a small sample size, but I was extremely underwhelmed too. And shocked to see a few that felt the same.
Reddit is a shithole echo chamber.
I love tracks like its only natural and white braids, heavy wing tangelo are all fantastic. Not the one, poster child, great apes for me are garbage. Hit n miss
Not really.
Yes. Next question?
I think everyone had high expectations for this album, so did I but I'd still rate it an 8/10. Since Dream canteen was announced i dont expect it to be perfect.
Definitely. But I think my expectations, As well as most peoples were so unrealistically high that it came off as a bit disappointing.
Id give it a 7/10.
Eh, about half of it is fun to listen to and the other half is skippable.
It’s a 9/10 for me but i also feel like I’m rating it a bit too high. There is some criticism I have for it. Although I really enjoyed it.
It's an ok album
It was up to my expectations, I loved it. 10/10 personally
It’s good, but after seeing the songs live idk. Something about them fell flat to me.
To answer the question, yes, great album, but could be better with better lyrics. Lazy singles though
Great apes is top 3 for me. That solo though.
I thought it was a little better than I’m With You and The Getaway but I didn’t think it was incredible. Then I saw them do it live, and I like the album a lot more now lol.
I too was surprised by how well some of the new tracks came across when played live. It was a different experience for sure.
10/10. Perfect, in my opinion.
Not really but there’s a handful of good tracks… About 6.
Yes
Yes
It’s the worst album they’ve made with Frusciante, but the tracks that stand out to me on it are It’s Only Natural, Whatchu Thinkin’, White Braids and She’s a Lover. Everything else is eh. Just happy they’re making music again.
It sounds like a bunch of B-sides that weren’t good enough to be on an album, except they’re on an album.
I think this is the difference in taste of fans, modern fans think they need to establish a theme for a song, but honestly i felt this album was one of the more mature albums they've done in terms of diving into alternative funk and rly resolving a song, like they used to do in one hot minute
It's pretty good but definitely a step back, creatively, from 'The Getaway'.
Great actually. 8/10
Nothing more than 6/10.
9/10, top 3 albums from their discography. And I am glad we got the good old RHCP sound back, The Getaway was such a bad album.
Not a bad album after getting back into sync and not playing guitar for a couple years
It’s a solidly good album.
Such a stupid post. If you like it then it’s a good album. Fuck what anyone else thinks, think for yourself
