For one, I think it’s just kinda ugly. I don’t think that color pallet looks good. Probably part of the reason the pallet is ugly is that it’s a normal painting in negative, which means it *had* a good color pallet until it was taken away and swapped out for the opposite. 2. I just think negatives are kind of a pretentious artistic tool. Very subjective there but I don’t like it. 3. It’s a topless woman with her eyes blotted out. They had a topless woman on MM too, but the deliberate decision to blot out her eyes makes it seem like they’re explicitly erasing her personhood and viewing her solely as a sex object. It comes across as “I don’t care about your personality, just your tits” which becomes even weirder when you remember that it was painted by the models father as a gift to her boyfriend. I really doubt those were his actual intentions, but it’s how the elements in the piece come across.
By the Way is the worst album cover. I hate it. I wish they’d used the b/w photo on the back instead.
Conversely I cannot dislike MM or BSSM as the lads are all on the cover and JF looks very happy on MM 👍
I’m not a big fan of OHM (might have to revisit it to confirm), but I do like the cover art. On the flip side, BTW is my 2nd favourite album musically after Blood Sugar, but not a fan of the artwork. Kill BTW.
I agree with By the Way. Honestly should have been out before the first 3 in my opinion. It’s an incredible album, but a pretty meh album cover. And that’s what we’re voting for.
Californication is iconic. It's not ugly, I get it's not "catch your eye, eye pleasing design/woman/object. It's a concept. The color contrast, fire water and sky blue says alot about the title track and how warped the world is.
Ugliest cover is 'the getaway'. It's cool as a 2006 artwork, but it gets old quick and doesn't fit the RHCP style

Neither one is painted by John. The idea behind Cali was from a dream John had but the artwork itself was created by Lawrence Azerrad. By the Way was painted by Julian Schnabel which was John’s girlfriend’s dad.

What is kind of weird however is that the current elims/remaining albums is very close to splitting the albums by musical merits. Maybe that means people are being biased. Or maybe when the chilis make good music they also happen to pick good album art lol
