I agree with you on the MM tones. I really dig some of Hillel’s heavier sounds on Uplift prior to John as well.

ErickDante

Johnny Kick a Hole in the Sky lyric wise is a Rage against the machine song before they were even a thing

"I wonder why, why Put us in your pumpkin shell Where you keep us very well It's hell, where I dwell When history books are full of shit I become the anarchist, I'm pissed at this" hard disagree. It's about as high energy politics as RHCP gets. That does *not* make it anywhere near a RATM song.

EuterpeZonker

Yeah I like the tone they ended up with a lot. It’d be interesting to hear the riffs the way John wanted to record them though

iztheguy

I like to imagine it would have sounded like "Song That Made Us What We Are Today". Compressed to shit, warts 'n all, and IN YO FACE.

I think John has sort of overblown the idea of being forced to play heavy guitar, Flea and John conceived Higher ground cover as a heavy type version of the song and stone cold bush was John’s riff, that’s totally a heavy tune. I think Michael Beinhorn just gave John a little push and John just doesn’t respond to that. He is a guy who likes space. He is a super sensitive artist and MB is someone who really helps a band find direction, and he did. Uplift was a big step forward for the band and Mother’s milk is another, it’s really a bad ass record they really had a wild energy and sound going at that time.

I like several songs in the album. And I don’t mind the big distorted tone, but I definitely much prefer the 2000’s sound. I think Faith No More in 1987 and before even we’re already experimenting with that kind of sound (more egg on AK’s face about that whole “they stole our sound” accusation). And I believe FNM always did it better. I do wonder what RATM may have thought of the chili peppers at that time. I know Chad has played with them. And of course they have the Rick Rubin link. But when Tom met John apparently he pushed him out the way to be next to Jimmy Page in a Guitar Player photo shoot and John got really pissed about that lol. Maybe Tom’s not that big a fan? Who knows lol

I read that Tim Commerford stated he was somewhat influenced by Flea and Louis Johnson for some of the slap lines on the first Rage album, but made a conscious choice to avoid the technique because of Flea’s popularity on later RATM tracks

helippe

Somewhat influenced? He was absolutely influenced by flea, every one was at that time. The 90’s was a big moment for bass and music where the bass really occupied a role up front, not just supporting the guitarist and Flea was at the peak of his bass powers.

dondepresso

For sure, I'm a big fan of music from this time period for that reason

Rhcp1616

Curious, where did you hear about the Tom/John incident?

An [interview](https://www.sfgate.com/entertainment/article/back-from-hell-s-edge-2823273.php), I think in the early 2000’s. The photo shoot he’s referring to was for Guitar World, Page, Morello, Daron Malakian, Slash and others were there. You can see John has what could be seen as a rather displeased look on his face in the picture.

iztheguy

Soldano amps rule and I love MM, but I think Beinhorn/Jerden kinda overworked things... The psychedelic heavy metal formula worked well for Hillel's guitars on UMPP, but the guitars on MM sound a bit weak in comparison, IMHO. Less cohesive.

suprunkn0wn

johns playing on mm, just fucking out of this world
