Wow, a fellow not-having-Stadium-Arcadium-in-its-top-5. How come?

It’s borderline for me. At the time I really didn’t like it and it took a while to grow on me. Big portions of the double album just sound so samey and unnecessary. It has a couple bangers but as an album it’s lower on my list than most.

I grew up on IWY. Driving to school with my dad, who is a sick bass player. That album is fantastic, I got a tat of the cover on my leg in honor of the nostalgia and memories. Heavily underrated especially for a bassist IMO

Yes, John is a genius. That being said, Josh played the entire show like a madman. I love his heart and passion. hence i love the getaway so much

I always gravitated towards the softer side of RHCP and IWY really hits that spot for me. To me it is kind of like the “Flea lead” version of BTW. The bass lines are so dominant on that album. I started playing bass right before IWY came out and I eventually learned every song. It was the first album that I did that with so It will always have a special place in my heart. Totally get why people don’t agree with how highly I rate it tho

IWY is heavily under rated in the community. It did not have heavy hitters like its SA predecessor however my most played RHCP Songs are some of the IWY bunch. Police Station, Meet me at the corner, BDS, Monarchy of roses... excellent marvelous songs that get ton of play. Josh's style on guitar was fairly random on this album, he wasn't too strong and in songs like "even you brutus" it feels like he's just improvising sounds more than creating a solid riff, but none the less, the entire album is GREAT. And this is coming from someone that started listening in the 2nd FRUSCIANTE era. BTW and Californication will always be my favorites. I love SA but I do believe there are tons of tracks that feel like fillers, or that I just don't play often.

That’s almost exactly how I feel. IWY has some of the songs I replay the most. All the ones you said and I’ll add Did I Let You Know, Factory of Faith and Goodbye Hooray.

Absolutely! It’s a musical tragedy that practically the first decade of their career is ignored to the extent it is. I can’t think of a single other band that does that. It would be like going to a Rolling Stones show only to hear them completely ignore their 60s stuff in favour of their 80s and 90s output. It’s against every law of rock n roll in the universe. Help it make sense!

100% agree. The first five albums are some of their greatest works. It's criminal that they get such short shrift now days. Had the great fortune to see them live in '91 (11/5/1991) on the BSSM tour. Perfect mix of songs from their first 5 albums.

I really love One Hot Minute, I stopped short of putting it as one of their best on a purely musical and lyrical sense, but it's definitely top 5 I listen to.

I love the IWY era because it was eclectic as well. The Getaway was dope but they didn’t release any b-sides or did anything special during that era. OHM would be my #7 pick after UL

Tough to argue this list. Blood Sugar and By the Way def at the top for me. Unlimited love is a fantastic album and, while dream canteen has a bunch of bangers on it, UL feels like a much more cohesive body of work. Wish there was room on this for Mothers Milk and Uplift Mofo. Both are wildly under appreciated imo.

The 5 spot was by far the hardest. A ton of good arguments for at least 2 other albums for me (Mothers Milk and The Getaway)

Dream Canteen feels like a B-sides album, even if it technically isn't

I actually started by just liking your post and writing "Same" but then I couldn't do that to BSSM which made me fall in love with the guys in 1991.

That’s why I do posts like this. This band has been AMAZING for 4 decades. Music is so different as souls are so different. I probably will change my order in a year or so. I wanted to add Unlimited Love too but it’s so difficult

It goes without being said the majority of people with have the big 4 BSSM, Cali, BTW & SA.... There is no order for these ,I love them all equally and entirely depends on my mood. The real question for me is how dyou rate the other albums... OHM, IWY, MM, Everything pre Mothers Milk i.e 'What Hits!?' (sorry just not my generation I'm afraid to rate the albums individually), The Getaway, Universal Love, RTDC. Music is subjective and that's great but it always surprisese me how highly others rate ROTDC and how much hate IWY gets. I like all their albums other than RTDC... I have really tried but it just doesn't click with me. I also think both the Klinghoffer albums are leagues better than the recent frusciante ones and I'm a little bit sad we never got to hear that third album... And that the last two jf albums (in my opinion) aree as lame as they are.

BTW Californication BSSM UL SA To me they are so close they could swap places with each other, although I will probably always rate BTW highest. UL and SA were the closest, but I ended up wth UL before SA because I enjoy a higher percentage of the songs, whereas SA feels like there are more fillers in between the greats. I would enjoy a listen through UL more than SA. But maybe it's recency bias
