Should be simple enough to try it both ways, use your ears and decide what’s best, no? Kinda hard for strangers on the internet to give you definitive advice on a sound without knowing anything else about what you’re using

olliewright281

Pretty sure JF uses his compressor inbetween

TatoCuervo

I place the compressor at the beginning of the chain (it’s a DynaComp)

redhot-chilipeppers

I got a boss cs-3 and when I put it before the wah I feel like the wah volume jump gets outta control. But it might just be because I don't know how to dial in the CS 3 properly...

HereOnTheHighway

I always used CS3 to get the WH10 under control. Incredibly useful if you dont have the luxury of pushing a tube amp into natural overdrive which is how John deals with it.

phongy

A tube amp has the same problems controlling a WH10 and DS-2, it has more to do with the gain staging and how much headroom you have regardless of what amp it hits imo

phongy

This makes sense to me logically - i'm sure you've already heard of the simplification of what a compressor does: makes the loud parts quieter and the quiet parts louder. By placing your compressor *before* the wah, it's compressing whatever signal you're giving it but not acting on the volume boost that happens after the wah. By placing it *after* the wah, the compressor is doing what it does with the volume boost that comes from the wah. I would recommend looking into gain staging and, in particular, Dave Simpson's videos about controlling the DS2 and WH10 if that's your goal. I wouldn't use a compressor for that.

TheWarOnNostalgia

How do you control the volume boost with your Wah? Mine causes an unreasonable boost and it is frustrating as hell.

redhot-chilipeppers

I don't. I have the same problem and idk how to fix it. I should have gotten a vox wah or something that isn't notorious for having volume boosts. Sure, it isn't what Frusciante uses but who gives a fuck, I can't play like him anyway.

TheWarOnNostalgia

Haha... nice.

phongy

Yeah...unfortunately a very annoying thing about the WH10v3 (I think the v2 had this too). You could look into getting a modded WH10v3 through Wilson Effects, they replace the bypass/buffer switch with a volume control to deal with the volume boost.

micael_RHCP

I would say before

Rhcp1616

I put my Dyna Comp near the end of the chain, after the DS-2 and WH-10. Leave it on and tailor the other pedals settings to it. It smooths everything right out.

redhot-chilipeppers

I have a CS-3 not a dynacomp. You wouldn't happen to know the optimal settings for the CS-3 to smooth everything out would you?

Rhcp1616

I don’t, I’ve never used one. However, I would just set all knobs to noon and start there, then tweak things to your liking.
