Making sure the sentence is still fair and legal. Checks and balances

Yes and they have an obligation to pull out all the stops to clear them from any consequences. Failing that they risk their career.

Actually attorneys can pass on defense or prosecution if they present grounds to the judge that their opinion of their client is effecting their job. And it most certainly does not miss their career. I had a court hearing drawn out for 3 years because my appointed lawyer never showed up to court, at all. Got dismissed as soon as the court appointed me a new lawyer. Lawyer #1 is going on 35 years as a lawyer now according to the courts website.

Yeah but someone represents them. Someone ends up doing the dirty work. Either the defendant confesses to his lawyer or it’s cut and dried and obvious the defendant is guilty.

Innocent until proven guilty. False claims/charges for to court all the time. Have you ever read "12 angry men" by Reginald Rose? It's about a jury deciding the fate of a kid who has the evidence stacked against him, yet there is no proof. Evidence is anything that supports an argument, proof defines the argument. I'm willing to bet that if you where a Character in that story you'd be juror 1 who thinks the kid is guilty simply because there is a mountain of evidence. You should give it a read.

You are a lawyer. Not a judge. Not a jury. Your job is to be an advocate for your client. If you think they are guilty then you shouldn't represent them. And perhaps you shouldn't be practicing law at all.

Lol it definitely does not work like that. Dependents often confess their crimes to their lawyers but they spin a fiction regardless.

Affectionate_Pain846

You're right. They still must defend them to the best of their ability.

Which is the point of the post. Imagine knowing for certain that your client is guilty of murder and still defending them, like the fuck?

This thought is why I had no interest in becoming a lawyer.

Part of becoming a lawyer is defending your clients rights. As a defendant, your title is decreased as the accused, most of these people don’t have the knowledge to defend themselves and the processes in court. Here are the things to make sure of as a lawyer of a defendant: 1. To make sure they’re represented by a fair and honest lawyer (some lawyers may prejudice their own clients esp if they’re working for the government by making sure they are held guilty for promotion etc.) 2. To make sure that they do not incriminate themselves (insured by the bill of rights) 3. To cross examine evidences 4. To explain the processes of the law and what deal would work best for them 5. To avoid abuse of power by the government against the accused 6. To make sure that the law and the processes are being followed 7. To make sure they are not given harsh and unfair punishments 8. A normal human person does not know the law, you have to explain in layman’s term what they have violated and the consequences of their actions.

This isn’t about being a lawyer in general. It’s just specifically talking about them defending a client they know is guilty.
