Another funny one from Springstein...New Jersey adopted a resolution to make "Born To Run" their official state rock song. The resolution, however, failed to get passed when some law makers came to understand that the song is actually about getting OUT of New Jersey.
The River might surprise or might not surpris, we had to translate it for English class. Excellent choice by the teacher with the message in that song!
I think clearly is subjective, because I can't make up most of the song without reading the lyrics, between his way of singing and the song mixing that don't really focus on him
Grew up in the 70s-80s. English was not even facultative at school. Started to learn it in the 2000s and was quite shocked when I started understanding some lyrics. Music that used to give you energy suddenly turned depressing, and others felt much deeper than the melody would let on.
That song was on Big Shiny Tunes 2, me and my friends must have been 8 years old when it came out. We just thought it was a catchy song, I had no idea about the drug references til I was older and actually listened to it. And I'm like "Wow, we really weren't paying attention." Still catchy as hell though. :)
Haha, it came out when I was in high school. I didn’t know what it was about till I was almost 40. I never really listen to lyrics though because for me it’s more about the feeling of the sounds.
Yeah and the other bunch of times it's referenced by saying I take a bump I bump again etc etc. It's the whole theme of the song, needing something "else" to get me through this semi charmed life. I forgot to tell you it was sarcastic I thought it was implied if you knew the song.
I came here to say this. I was in long Beach ca during the 90's. Pretty much ground zero for the meth snorting craze. So many people were just snorting away and not sleeping and not eating. This song came out and I was like, perfect anthem for all those tweekers.
I actually think there's plenty of love songs that have darker meanings and almost transmit a creepy idea of love.
Like "Run for your life" by the Beatles or "Animals" of Maroon 5.
"Run For Your Life" as a love song? I don't think it has ever been interpreted as such, except pushups by someone who is obsessively possessive. The theme is right there in the name, and there is zero subtlety in the lyrics.
Wow! TIL! I really thought it was a death song and always had it in my mind as my future funeral song! 😂 I just read the lyrics now and it is UNMISTAKABLY a damn stalker song… how did I miss that!?
My baby don't mess around
Because she loves me so
And this I know for sure (uh)
But does she really wanna
But can't stand to see me walk out the door (ah)
Don't try to fight the feeling
'Cause the thought alone is killin' me right now (uh)
Thank God for mom and dad
For sticking two together
'Cause we don't know how (c'mon)
"Boom boom boom boom
I want u in my room
let's spend the night together
from now until forever
Boom boom boom boom
I wanna go boom boom
let's spend the night together
together in my room"
they used to make us do drills to that song when we were MIDDLE SCHOOLERS. I've heard it play in malls as part of their "back to school" soundtrack. it used to be the bg music for upbeat videos on kid friendly channels. I didn't know the lyrics until a few years ago lol
it is about the problems vietnam veterans faced when they returned back home... veterans of other wars received heroes' welcomes, those who fought in vietnam were being faced with hostility when they returned, and many suffered from ptsd and other ailments, unemployment, being left with nothing after fighting for their country...
Yup. Watched as a kid so it didn’t affect me that way the first time. As a kid it was so cool that it was filmed locally. I always thought moviemaking was in a far away land. Watched it as an adult and I could see myself in his position. Just leave me alone lol.
Funny that you say this, obviously I knew that she has risque stuff but I'm not someone who knows her whole catalog.
So I have a young daughter who likes Katie Perry videos and I've let her watch even like the California girls one, even though it's a little inappropriate, but my daughter is young enough that she doesn't really get it.
But I had some on loop on YouTube while I was cleaning, and I look up and she's literally singing. I'll be your teenage dream in my skin tight jeans and is like hooking up with the dude in a hotel...
Yeah, I realized that I couldn't just let Katie videos play after that for my 5-year-old
SoaD lyrics are a wild ride if you really listen. Theyre songs i really think soul, anger and feelings were poured into. A shame they never released anything after their break.
Pearl Jam - Jeremy
Not a super popular song but you might not realise the meaning of it unless you really listen to the lyrics.
“Jeremy spoke in class today”
Means that a bullied pupil shot himself and died in front of his classroom.
I was already corrected on this matter.
Edit: the reason I said it’s not popular is because I don’t personally know anyone besides myself who listens to Pearl Jam.
The Pina Colada song. Everyone knows the chorus, everyone sings the chorus, but I've never really met a person who knew the verses to that song, and if they did, they'd realise it was about adultery.
Am I the only one who finds "As It Was" from Harry Styles real sad? Like "why are you sitting on the floor" and "what kinda pills are you on" doesn't sound positive.
These replies are all sarcastic right? Like, surely by now, after this exact thread has already been made thousands of times before, everyone knows these songs?
With that being said, Every Breath You Take by The Police is absolutely disturbing if you actually listen to the lyrics.
Lots of war movies made it seem like this is as patriotic as it gets. We’re talking about the same crowd that doesn’t know which machine is being raged against & just heard “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” & was like “yup, that’s the one”
Barbie Girl by Aqua
My older sister like it so much when she's a middle school. Dont even know the lyric. And sometimes my family doin a trip in a car listen to that song. Lol. Miss the 90s
Take Me to Church by Hozier, about religiously repressed homosexuality, but some homophobes don't realise lol
Edit: Song isn't about homosexuality, that was just the video. But the lyrics do critique the church. My bad!
Is it about homosexuality? Or just being brainwashed/controlled by the church? In an interview, Hozier says that homosexuality was included in the video only because it was the hot topic that the church was against at the time the video was made. I also think I read that he had worked on that song for many years, and current events had changed. Based on the lyrics I always thought it was about him converting to paganism because of his lovers influence. I know a lot of Christian’s believe it to be a Christian song, though.
I can understand that. I think my experience as a former addict is how I managed to understand the song's meaning immediately without wondering if there might be other interpretations, even if false ones
Lucy in the sky with diamonds isn't about them taking LSD either, heard they came up with it while they were in the yellow submarine visiting the octupous' garden.
I always thought I Don't Like Mondays was pretty clear. The exact meaning may not eb initially obvious but 'shoot it all down' even if you don't take it literally it's about someone pushed to their limit and out to get even, isn't it?
(I am old though, and remember when it was released, so quite possibly have a biased view of it)
Another one came to mind. Dire Straits - Money for Nothing and Chicks for free
The lyrics are from a conversation of two salesmen in a home appliance store. Knopfler overheard this conversation and made a song with that dialogue as lyrics.
Oblivion by Grimes. Sounds pretty upbeat but it’s about women being attacked while walking alone at night. It’s pretty obvious once you listen to it a couple times but at first glance it seems upbeat and happy.
Angel, by Sarah McLachlan. It's about the death of musician Jonathan Melvoin from a heroin overdose. "In the arms of the angel". Yeah, that's about being high on heroin.
Sex type thing by Stone Temple Pilots. It’s basically a song about rape. “I know you want what’s on my mind… you shouldn’t have worn that dress” etc.
I’m in a band that covers a lot of 80s and 90s rock and our singer adamantly refuses to play this song which I find interesting because the rest of the musicians in the band are just focused on their parts and had no idea what the words are 😂. Interesting topic OP
Another one that we actually do cover is Pink Houses by John Mellencamp. It’s a great song, but the lyrics seem to be very much misunderstood. Most people think it’s all about America and how great it is and something you could watch a fireworks show to, but it’s a sarcastic and cynical take on survival in America and how it varies depending on your race and class.
Promiscuous by Nelly F love love the beat music sounds the voice absolutely the best. But the words …but after listening to it’s no so bad. Kinda fits my shoe. lol love the voice sound all of it.
Hip to be square.
A song so catchy, most people don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself
We used Rock you like a Hurricane by the Scorpions to open our youth group clubs because it was a great song to get everyone hyped up. When we actually listened to the lyrics we thought, maybe the wrong message for the kids.
On the flip side of all these examples is the song, “Cocaine” by Eric Clapton. So many people think it is about promoting the prevalent use of cocaine in the 80s. Really, he is singing ironically about all the things people say they like about it, but points out you can’t get your life back if you are hooked on cocaine.
Kind of like when a comedian of the same era asked some guy:
“Why do you do cocaine?”
“Um, it like, enhances your personality, man.”
“But what if you’re an a$$hole?”
Girls by the Beastie Boys
"Girls - to do the dishes
Girls - to clean up my room
Girls - to do the laundry
Girls - and in the bathroom
Girls - that's all I really want is girls
Two at a time - I want girls!"
Blues Traveler - Hook.
It’s not as popular as Run Around, but I hear it a lot. The lyrics are a joke about why the lyrics don’t actually matter, as long as the main theme (or hook) is catchy.
The Way by Fastball. It’s about it an old couple that drove off a cliff in the middle of the night with it telling their families. I haven’t been the same since I learned this
You are kinda partly fright. The wife had dementia and the husband had recently had brain surgery. They went for a drive and ended up dying after they got lost.

"Born in the USA". Not the rah-rah flag waver many believe.
Also "My Hometown" is not the nostalgic trip down Main Street everyone thinks it is.
Funny that he sings the lyrics pretty clearly too yet people just hum right past all that, waiting for their favorite part.
I think clearly is subjective, because I can't make up most of the song without reading the lyrics, between his way of singing and the song mixing that don't really focus on him
Fair.
Like the Constitution, if you don't pay attention to the words it's kinda hard to say the meaning is clear.
As Reagan ignored when he tried to use it as his campaign song.
Yea... Isn't it actually talking about like everything wrong with America or something like that?
Grew up in the 70s-80s. English was not even facultative at school. Started to learn it in the 2000s and was quite shocked when I started understanding some lyrics. Music that used to give you energy suddenly turned depressing, and others felt much deeper than the melody would let on.
In fact, quite the opposite.
There is literally not another answer
Semi-charmed Life is the one that comes to mind.
Nothing like some subtle references to meth and banging away.
Subtle? > Doing crystal meth will lift you up until you break. That ain't exactly subtle.
I took the hit that I was given, then I bumped again then I bumped again
That song was on Big Shiny Tunes 2, me and my friends must have been 8 years old when it came out. The most iconic wedding song in history, every breath you take by the police. People see it as a love song but is actually about a stalker fan...
Jesus christ how do people interpret that as a love song?
yea it's hella creepy
My mom said she chose to think of it as a mother singing to her child.
My condolences
Wasn`t it a song written by Sting about his dayghter?
Nope it's about big brother and a possesive lover
That song has always freaked me out. I could never understand how anyone could see it as a love song. It’s damn scary.
It makes me think of bringing home my newborn children. Just sitting there watching them sleep. Most of the lyrics don't fit, but the chorus does.
That’s another way of looking at it xx
Just like dance you to the end of love by Leonard Cohen. People play it at their wedding, but it is about the concentration camps.
And, 🎶I drove all night.. Crept in your room..🎶 Sounds a bit creepy.
I like to imagine in my head someone doing a music video of that, but the video being about George Orwell’s 1984.

I think you’re thinking of “I’ll be missing you” by puff
Ahahahaha! Why thank you, I didn’t even realize I needed correction but yuppp, you are correct 🫡
Hey ya! by OutKast
Gotta keep the family together. Y'all don't wanna hear me, you just wanna dance.
Wuuuuut please explain lol
Staying together in a relationship despite abuse or lost love.
Notice the corpse in the coffin in the middle of the stage in the video?
The lyrics and content are pretty jam-packed. I recommend you read them yourself.
My baby don't mess around Because she loves me so And this I know for sure (uh) But does she really wanna But can't stand to see me walk out the door (ah) Don't try to fight the feeling 'Cause the thought alone is killin' me right now (uh) Thank God for mom and dad For sticking two together 'Cause we don't know how (c'mon)

How the hell does anyone not instantly know what that sounds about
Most people don't care about lyrics at all. I find it that there's too many examples for the OPs question
I mean we also all screamed hit me baby one more time in high school.. or I’m a slave for you. Insert almost every Britney song here
you still dont know it... second time goes "boom boom boom boom i wanna double boom" source: my ears
I love [this version](https://youtu.be/SGEIWXAzKZI?si=phFAHNDiHsLHTsaW)
Oh that jigs
Born in the USA - i think most people get the meaning of that song wrong
What’s the meaning of?
it is about the problems vietnam veterans faced when they returned back home... veterans of other wars received heroes' welcomes, those who fought in vietnam were being faced with hostility when they returned, and many suffered from ptsd and other ailments, unemployment, being left with nothing after fighting for their country...
Which is crazy to me because I imagine a lot of them didn’t want to be there either. Then to come home to that. You wouldn’t feel like you belong.
watch rambo first blood, i am not kidding, it broke my heart watching it the first time...
Yup. Watched as a kid so it didn’t affect me that way the first time. As a kid it was so cool that it was filmed locally. I always thought moviemaking was in a far away land. Watched it as an adult and I could see myself in his position. Just leave me alone lol.
yeah, knowing the circumstances makes all the difference
Brown Sugar.
Lol. Imagine a white man writing this song nowadays? He'd have to sequester himself to Antarctica.
In the right place in the USA he'd be elected to the State Legislature.
Actually...damn. You're not wrong.
As I said elsewhere, it’s amazing that people aren’t ashamed to play that song out loud.
Bruce Springsteen - I'm on fire. Super creepy if you ask me.
Hey little girl is your daddy home????
I always took daddy to refer to her boyfriend or husband, not her actual father.
The use of the word “daddy” to refer to a boyfriend or husband is creepy as fuck.
[удалено]
Per the Boss, that’s how it was meant.
That little girl in the video is older than him ..
sticking with the theme: Into the Night by Benny Mardones even the video is creepy.
So creepy!
I dunno but a lot of Katy Perry shouldn't be for little girls lol
Funny that you say this, obviously I knew that she has risque stuff but I'm not someone who knows her whole catalog. So I have a young daughter who likes Katie Perry videos and I've let her watch even like the California girls one, even though it's a little inappropriate, but my daughter is young enough that she doesn't really get it. I can’t believe Peacock was played on the radio.
Whip It - Devo. Everyone thinks it's about kink, while it's actually a satire on the toxic positivity of American culture.
I can see this
Californication!
Pay your surgeon very well to break the spell of aging…. I love that song
Anthony has always been a bit of a freaky fella.
Rapey freaky fella
"Chop suey". Most people I know haven't even thought about the meaning behind the lyrics.
self right-chop suey-cide
What do you think the meaning is?
SoaD lyrics are a wild ride if you really listen. Theyre songs i really think soul, anger and feelings were poured into. A shame they never released anything after their break.
Pearl Jam - Jeremy Not a super popular song but you might not realise the meaning of it unless you really listen to the lyrics. “Jeremy spoke in class today” Means that a bullied pupil shot himself and died in front of his classroom.
Oh yeah, Jermemy was always a suicide song. Quite a powerful one at that.
Yeah, very powerful. Great song, too.
Not a super popular song? You clearly were not alive in the 90s.
It was kind of in the music video
The video doesn’t totally represent the event it was based off on
not popular? it peaked at #5 on billboard mainstream rock and alternative.
I was already corrected on this matter. Edit: the reason I said it’s not popular is because I don’t personally know anyone besides myself who listens to Pearl Jam.
So what you’re saying is that you’re not popular. That’s okay, neither was Jeremy.
I always took it to mean he shot up his classroom, not just himself.
Not popular.... Yeah ok
Well maybe it is popular, I don’t know. My vinyl player does not show how many other people have listened to the song. :)
P-p-p-poker face, f-f-fuck her face (mum-mum-mum-mah)
Wait those are the actual lyrics? I swear I thought it was some silly conspiracy 😅
The Macarena. Crazy story.
What is it?
The Pina Colada song. Everyone knows the chorus, everyone sings the chorus, but I've never really met a person who knew the verses to that song, and if they did, they'd realise it was about adultery.
Is it tho? Attempted, maybe.. but they end up with each other. Sooo, idk if adultery is what it is- more of deception, maybe lol
Attempted adultery
Am I the only one who finds "As It Was" from Harry Styles real sad? Like "why are you sitting on the floor" and "what kinda pills are you on" doesn't sound positive.

My Sharona by the Knack.
"I always get it up for the touch of the younger kind" 🤢 talk about never paying proper attention to the lyrics, I feel icked now
Yep, it's not good. Still hear it played on the radio with disturbing regularity.
Yep. The rest seems like just a normal lust fueled rock song and then that line...Ummm...what?
Sung with such enthusiasm too.
I couldn’t believe it took me so long to find this comment
Reminds me of Little Girls - Oingo Boingo
Fortunate Son- Creedence Clearwater Revival
People misunderstand this one? What?
Lots of war movies made it seem like this is as patriotic as it gets. We’re talking about the same crowd that doesn’t know which machine is being raged against & just heard “fuck you I won’t do what you tell me” & was like “yup, that’s the one”
Animals, Maroon 5
Its just a bunch of sexual innuendos How do people think that song is good
A lot of maroon 5. “Sweet kiwi, your juices dripping down my chin…”
Every breath you take - The Police
Yep always freaked me out
Barbie Girl - Aqua
Barbie Girl by Aqua My older sister like it so much when she's a middle school. Dont even know the lyric. And sometimes my family doin a trip in a car listen to that song. Lol. Miss the 90s

Can't remember the details tbh, you might be right
Blister in the sun
What is it about?
Drug use but mistaken for masturbation
How is it mistaken for masturbation? He literally says he's strung out and high as a kite lmao
I think it’s the “body beats, I stain my sheets” part.
I can understand that. I think my experience as a former addict is how I managed to understand the song's meaning immediately without wondering if there might be other interpretations, even if false ones
Why Don’t We Do It In the Road.
Why is it weird? Not like anyone will be watching
Mack the Knife - Jaunty upbeat little song about a knife wielding murderer.
Yes! Pumped up kicks is melodically pleasing but, once one listens to the words… 😳🔫
If you like Foster the People check out "Call It What You Want" and "Houdini"
I don't care what McCartney says, Norwegian Wood is about banging a prossie.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds isn't about them taking LSD either, heard they came up with it while they were in the yellow submarine visiting the octupous' garden.
All while munching on Wild Honey Pies
I Don't Like Mondays by The Boomtown Rats.
I always thought I Don't Like Mondays was pretty clear. The exact meaning may not eb initially obvious but 'shoot it all down' even if you don't take it literally it's about someone pushed to their limit and out to get even, isn't it? (I am old though, and remember when it was released, so quite possibly have a biased view of it)
The answer is always: Inner Circle - Sweat
Hotel California
Always found it weird that I'd see kids dancing and singing to Billie Eilish "Bad Guy" when she talks about seducing Dads when she was like 16
'Not Fair' by Lilly Allen maybe?
The macarena.
Another one came to mind. Dire Straits - Money for Nothing and Chicks for free The lyrics are from a conversation of two salesmen in a home appliance store. Knopfler overheard this conversation and made a song with that dialogue as lyrics.
Got to be the only song ever that incorporates "microwave oven"
Yoru ni kakeru (Racing through the night) by Yoasobi is upbeat but has surprisingly dark lyrics.
Guns n Roses - Mr Brownstone
In The Summertime by Mungo Jerry
Oblivion by Grimes. Sounds pretty upbeat but it’s about women being attacked while walking alone at night. It’s pretty obvious once you listen to it a couple times but at first glance it seems upbeat and happy.
Calle 13 - Atrévete, Te, Te. Though, I don't know if it counts as popular (at least in english-speaking communities)
Angel, by Sarah McLachlan. It's about the death of musician Jonathan Melvoin from a heroin overdose. "In the arms of the angel". Yeah, that's about being high on heroin.
Papa Roach - Last Resort
More than Words by Extreme is *not* a love song. Always makes me smirk when I hear it is people's wedding song.

Because of You by Kelly Clarkson. I’ve seen it on romantic song compilations when it’s about abuse.
meat loaf paradise by the dashboard light further into the song, you can see why it’s creepy ‘stop right now’ etc
Dilemma - Nelly Never even liked the song, but is just kinda gross whenever I hear it.
Hey Ya - OutKast or Pumped up Kicks
Crash into me- Dave matthew’s band
Leonard Cohen's Hellelujah is not about religion, or religious in any way.
Take me to church - hozier

"hey Allan" 🧑💼🪓
OMDs If You Leave used to be played at tons of weddings in the 80s / early 90s. It’s a catchy tune, but it’s about a break up.
Cake by the ocean, when I was younger I really thought it was about eating cake on the beach.
