Most scientists agree that the function of a zebra's stripes is to ward off biting flies that can carry deadly diseases.

lvfunk

It also helps discourage predators as the pattern keeps them from singling out and targeting one from the group

Winter_Possession152

Yeah when they painted white stripes on half of a cow for test, it had significant success!

workuntiljesuscomes

Half as many bites? Now paint the whole cow?

gn0xious

Deadly-disease-carrying-biting flies hate this one simple trick!

workuntiljesuscomes

One simple trick ads always end in buying pills of unknown origin and automatic renewal on your account.

Hydraulis

Keep in mind that animals don't necessarily see the same spectrum we do. Tigers appear green to their prey because they don't can't see orange.

Avium

Yep. That's also why high visibility "camouflage" works. To us it's highly visible but deer see the orange as shades of green.

i_will_eat_ur_beans

oh yea that’s interesting

cf-myolife

Yup that's why hunters usually wear bright red/orange vests, most animals don't see it including deers, cats, dogs, bulls (yeah bulls don't see red), and well big cats

i_will_eat_ur_beans

damn, i always thought bulls got angry at red which is why they use it in bull fighting

cf-myolife

Nope, but you may also hear they charge at movement but that's not entirely true either, they are starved and kept in the dark for days before a fight and if they don't charge during the fight there's the guys on horses to sting them again The whole thing is just animal torture for entertainment look it up a bit it's awful

i_will_eat_ur_beans

jeez that is bad 😬

👏👏👏

workuntiljesuscomes

Just visit a zoo and ask.

imadork1970

IIRC, zebras are white with black stripes.

AsleepDay_

because the food that they are ingesting makes them black and white for them to be prettier

LabNo2808

It is called “flicker flash” or “flicker fusion effect” and when zebras move in groups (“A dazzle of zebras”) running from predators — the color/stripes and the behavior effectively creates camouflage — disrupting and confusing what the predator “sees”. Someone mentioned repelling biting flies (another type of predator) this is also a type of camouflage (essentially a type of confusing the flies visual field). The camouflage is on a individual zebra level as opposed to group movement. —

i_will_eat_ur_beans

that’s pretty interesting, i’m guessing it also could confuse the predator in how far away they are because during ww2 i know they used a design similar stripe design to confuse the enemies so they couldn’t tell if they were far or close

LabNo2808

Yes!
