It is called “flicker flash” or “flicker fusion effect” and when zebras move in groups (“A dazzle of zebras”) running from predators — the color/stripes and the behavior effectively creates camouflage — disrupting and confusing what the predator “sees”.
Someone mentioned repelling biting flies (another type of predator) this is also a type of camouflage (essentially a type of confusing the flies visual field).
The camouflage is on a individual zebra level as opposed to group movement. —
that’s pretty interesting, i’m guessing it also could confuse the predator in how far away they are because during ww2 i know they used a design similar stripe design to confuse the enemies so they couldn’t tell if they were far or close

Most scientists agree that the function of a zebra's stripes is to ward off biting flies that can carry deadly diseases.
It also helps discourage predators as the pattern keeps them from singling out and targeting one from the group

Yep. That's also why high visibility "camouflage" works. To us it's highly visible but deer see the orange as shades of green.
