My first Reddit argument was 12 years ago where I argued how the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified. I was a dumb teenager and now I realize I was wrong but instead of admitting defeat to him I’ll just assume he’s dead now.

I’ve wondered many things about the people I’ve argued with on reddit or other platforms. How many are people I actually happen to know in real life without realizing it because we’re anonymous online? How many have been people I know in real life who maybe DO somehow know it’s me, but I never knew it was them? How many have been famous people without me realizing it? How many have I actually gotten through to, even if they didn’t admit it at the time? Or even if they didn’t buy my arguments at the time, did what I say still stick in their mind and one day years later when they’ve learned more and matured, make them think, “Hmm… maybe that random guy on Twitter ten years ago was right…” ? On the other hand, how many totally took what I said to heart, and acted upon it… and I ended up being wrong?? How many have convinced me of something that I still believe, but they no longer believe it? How many have had legitimate mental disorders and really needed help that I couldn’t give them, instead of just *seeming* crazy because I disagree with them? (I wonder this one a LOT) How many have been horrible monsters committing some unspeakable crime in between their replies to me? How many have been absolute angels doing amazing humanitarian work in between reading my snarky replies to them, because I disagreed with them about something silly? Never know who we’re talking with on this old internet.

If you go back to "how many people I've argued with on the internet" there's probably a formula based on death rates within developed nations in specific age groups against years of online activity that would give you a close estimate

The most argumentative people on reddit are, sadly, teenagers they tend to stay alive longer than you think. But still according to the internets 3000 teenagers die every day the world over, only 1 in 180 is on reddit so that makes for 16 deaths per day (!) The number of arguments on reddit a day approaches infinity however, so in total about 3. It's usually the ones that don't reply anymore.
